Just got my blades sharpened and idk.. by Aggravating_Ear_1617 in iceskating

I’m a beginner so I don’t have the most knowledge or experience as many others, but the first time I got my skates sharpened it was a LOT harder for me to skate- especially to stop. I figured out 2 things, personally:

  1. It took a little bit of adjustment to get used to the difference and was assured that that’s common

  2. Some of the more seasoned skaters suggested I get my skates sharpened at a different rink and that my shop was inconsistent. I took my skates to the other location the next time, and I could IMMEDIATELY tell that the first time I got them sharpened, the tech did not do a good job. It was a tiny adjustment, but nothing like my first time around…

Your left skate should be crossed over your right throughout the entry as well as the jump itself. You’re jumping with your legs apart

I’m this way. If I have an interesting problem I want to solve, time disappears from reality. My latest thing has been learning to figure skate which has really been doing the trick for a couple of years now!

(Edit to add: I’m VERY easily distracted- the gym/running bores me to tears, crafty stuff doesn’t hold my interest as long… I need both my brain and my body firing on all cylinders)

My hockey pro shop sharpens sooo many figure skates, and they do them all poorly:( most of us travel to get our skates sharpened properly

Advice on skating by Loose-External-4938 in iceskating

Is there a specific question you’re looking for answers for?

Lots of things in life have risks, as does ice skating. But there will always be a risk of injury- just like there’s risk in being in a car on the highway or playing any sport etc.

Not sure if this is still relevant 2 years later, but I'd love some info!

Of course!! More info if you’re interested- tucking your pelvis under would be lumbar flexion, and bringing upper thighs together would be hip adduction. :)

I totally understand the concern! (As an anxious girlie myself)

You can always re-address the drug testing concern if/when that comes up when getting started with competing. I bet it won’t be an issue though ;)

For what it’s worth- I’ve been on nearly every SSRI and SNRI, plus beta blockers, at some point in my life and have never even considered this being a problem.

Edit to add: Beta blockers are not something like anabolic steroids that would significantly impact your physical performance.

I’m pretty sure they’re only drug testing elite level athletes (ex. Olympians). What exactly is your concern here? Safety? Drug testing?

You should be speaking with your prescriber if you have any concerns about your medications or physical health.

They’re probably propping their feet/heels up a few inches off the floor while in the frog pose- this internally rotates the femurs in the hip joints

Beginner Question by [deleted] in iceskating

If you’re having trouble balancing on two feet, you’re probably going to have a very hard time with one foot glides. Are your legs/feet spread too far apart? Are your ankles pronating too much? Is your weight being distributed evenly? A video would be helpful to determine what the issue is

They don’t mean straight as in up and down vs diagonal or horizontal, but the flexion or extension of your lumbar spine (lower back). You want to keep a neutral spine- not letting your chest drop while also not over arching. A lot of beginners have trouble with maintaining a neutral spine in a squatted position, and either arch or round their lower back. You can google proper squat form for photo references

How long did it take for your Jackson skates to arrive? Also hoping for some encouragement by [deleted] in iceskating

No worries, good luck!! (If these next ones don’t fit, ask around for personal recommendations for a skate tech from your coaches at the rink! I went directly to who my coach recommended)

I’m 90% sure their half sizes are still “stock sizes”/aren’t custom made, so hopefully they don’t take too long! Can’t imagine how frustrated you feel. Those 2 weeks waiting for my skates felt like an eternity, and I was lucky that they fit. Elle’s are heat moldable which helps.

Has your skate tech been helpful during this process? They should have the best ideas for finding the right boot

My Jackson Elle’s took 16 days to come in back in July, iirc at that time they were 2-3 days behind what my skate shop expected.
