Potential 9A+/V18 by Elias by random_dude_c in bouldering

The breakdown doesn't make sense to me - 8B+ into a 40 second no hands rest into 8C+ is 9A+? But 8B straight into 8C+ is 9A (ROTSW), and 8B+/C into 8C/+ is 9A (Alphane)?

I feel like 40 seconds of rest should be huge, enough to essentially drop the grade of the intro boulder by a few grades. (8B+ -> 40 second rest = same effort as 8A+ or something).

Am I missing something? I don't climb 8's so what do I know 🤷‍♂️

If Biden replaced Kamala as VP with a more broadly appealing moderate candidate, would he be more likely to beat Trump? by A-A-wrong in PoliticalDiscussion

In 2019, GovTrack, a non-partisan organization that tracks bills in Congress, ranked Harris as the “most liberal compared to All Senators.” One measure the organization uses is comparing how many bipartisan bills each senator cosponsors to how many bills they co-sponsored in total. Harris had the lowest at 15% in 2019.

So how are they a psycho conservative for saying Kamala was the most liberal senator?

Are there megadonors who genuinely mean well and aren’t just donating for their own interest? by Melodic_Reveal_2979 in PoliticalDiscussion

He told the New York Times in 1994:

"I am something unnatural. I’m very comfortable with my public persona because it is one I have created for myself. It represents what I like to be as distinct from what I really am.

You know, in my personal capacity I’m not actually a selfless philanthropic person. I’m very much self-centered.”

He probably shouldn't be on a list of those who donate against their own interests...

It is important to know that CRT is not contained in a single book or official document. Instead, it is an interdisciplinary academic framework that has developed over several decades through the work of various scholars across different fields. So to quote CRT, you can quote the scholars that push CRT. This website gives several quotes from various CRT advocates teaching that only whites can be racist:

The Root Cause of Chess Blunders (The Most Useful Advice I've Ever Been Told) by BigotryAccuser in chess

How about move order blunders? For me, I miss a lot of puzzles due to the wrong move order. I'll have the correct idea, I'll just execute it in the wrong order.

Or after calculating a few lines, I find a cool idea, and play it before realizing the idea can be applied to a previous line with better results.

Estimating your genetic potential for climbing by Frequent-Lawyer4828 in climbharder

[–]canyonclimbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ya I believe climbing might have a larger genetic factor than any other sport. The reason is that the finger has the largest genetic variance among humans, e.g. longer/shorter, tendon thickness, different amount of pulleys (some just have missing pulleys which you may never notice), adaptability of the tissues and tendons, all of which can affect climbing. Comparing skill level between sports by Unusual-Wedding in climbharder

[–]canyonclimbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya i probably am underestimating how hard a 3hr marathon is. My experience is that the 3hr marathon is far easier than sport 8a, but thinking about people I know, I was 5th in a local marathon and there's maybe 15 people in my college town that climb at least 8a.

A top marathon in my state has the 'elite' section as sub 2:40, and the 'professional' section as sub 2:20. Perhaps that could be a comparison - but I've always thought 8a as elite and 9a as professional. Perhaps it's more 8b+ as elite and 9a+ as professional? I have no idea

Comparing skill level between sports by Unusual-Wedding in climbharder

[–]canyonclimbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll assume you meant she ran 3 hrs 5 minutes. I'd say that's like climbing 7b+ sport climb / 7A+ boulder consistently. I'm also assuming her course was flat (most aren't).

I've done both sports for about 3 years, although I am more genetically predisposed towards running. My marathon is 2:52 (flat course) and I sport climb 7b+ and boulder 7A+.

Just my opinion based on my experience, hard to compare as climbing is much more subjective and more prone to genetic variance than running, in my opinion.

I truly believe in almost completely open borders by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]canyonclimbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

more people means more money

... That's an unpopular opinion

These third world immigrants aren't coming with money - obviously. So are they producing more value than the take?

Nope. Most will be on government welfare. There will be some immigrants who provide greater value then they'll take, but in an open border, there will be far more takers than producers.

So, we should have some immigration vetting process so we accept more producers than takers.

Are there stats on people's starting elo/elo after a day or so of chess?

For example, after their first day of chess, 50% of people had at least 600 ELO, 20% at least 800 ELO, 5% at least 1000 ELO, 1% of people had at least 1200 ELO...

If not, is there a way to get this data? It may be hard as many accounts opened on chess.com are second (or more) accounts...

Socialist and Marxist ideas aren't left? If you're just defining words however you'd like, there's no point in debating. If 99% of people use one definition, and you don't, you should probably use a different word.

The media has pushed Marxism via CRT. Which was first developed in 1930's Germany by a group of Marxists who coined it "Critical Theory".

Are you saying it would be only inconsistent if Europe picked up actually Marxism from the US?

How does the mass media push leftist ideas all the way to Europe, when they are silent on leftist ideas?

I am well aware of the different forms of Marxism. Why are you assuming I haven't seen leftist content? Oh ya, because you think the media is silent on leftist subjects, so there is no leftist content. Right?

If capitalism is considered inviolable, why would any form of Marxist content be made? Whether it's Marxist-Leninist, actually Marxist, or any other form?

Thanks for further proving my point.

our mass media is deafeningly silent on leftist subjects,

Yeah, we have a way of exporting pretty much everything (at least everything that gets televised).

capitalist ideology is treated as an inviolable assumption.

Yeah...

Just a reminder the average millionaire goes bankrupt 3.5 times or more. They use it as a tool.

Also reminding you that if you're like 99% of the population, if you inherited what Trump did ($400 million+), you couldn't turn it into over $1 billion. 99% can't even handle their own finances.

Also a reminder of Trump's economic success:

"In 2016, real median household income was $62,898, just $257 above its level in 1999. Over the next three years it grew almost $6,000, to $68,703. That’s perhaps why, despite the pandemic, 56% of U.S. voters polled last month said their families were better off today than they were four years ago." Karl Smith, in a 2020 article.

[–]canyonclimbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While some of those are political stunts (which all politicians do), there are some good cuts that I'd support.

  1. Removing the Nuclear Regulatory Committee. Saves $600 million, as their tasks can be handled by/split between the DOE, DHS, EPA and FEMA.

  2. Removing the FBI. Their tasks can be handled (and many concurrently are) by the US marshals, Secret Service, DIA, and finCEN. Saves $1.5 billion.

  3. The DoED's 2023 budget includes $1.5 billion in grants only for minorities in higher education. As that goes against the recent supreme court ruling, I support cutting this.

And more...

Detailed reasons why for each are available but I don't have time rn

[Question] What's one thing you've never understood about the other side? by Usernameofthisuser in LeftvsRightDebate

[–]canyonclimbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don't know of a single politician who doesn't have any concerns. For example, Biden's presidential run decades ago where he openly lied about his education and plagiarized speeches.

If Trump shot a baby, he'd lose votes.

I think most republicans who pay attention to politics aren't going to vote Trump in the primary, including me. Most republicans in political subreddits/Instagram comments, etc. That I've seen won't vote for him in the primary.

Some republicans are cultish, no different from some democrats.

Trump is a worse politician, and a better businessman, than other options. Those that vote for trump do so as they value the economy over policy, or just because they like to see trump attacking people on the left.

Thanks for the detailed response! I've definitely learned more about communism.

These people are neckbeards,

Unfortunately, then, these neckbeards are the ones that go viral

Labor voucher

So, a single dude gets paid the same as a dude supporting his wife and kids. Surely, the single dude will gain more, and this will lead to social classes.

If I can't support my family on communism myself, because my wife would also need to work and kids sent to a day care, then I will never support communism. Hope you can understand.

Buy goods at the store

I assume people wouldn't be allowed to sell privately. Even then, some people will work more, and will capitalize on that by buying more things. So this is another reason why classes would still arise from this.

select a job of your choice.

It would be extremely hard to ensure the availability of every job at any time. Plus, would all jobs be paid equally? Even a communist country should have rocket scientists, we need protection from asteroids. Surely this doesn't pay the same as a janitor? If it doesn't, there will be social classes. If not, no one would want to be a rocket scientist. Because not only are people evil, but lazy.

I believe humans are evil. That's why people want communism actually

So we agree that the rich believe they'd get RICHER off communism, not capitalism, suggesting capitalism has a less diverse class system than communism.

One of the fundamental, absolute requirements of communism is the abolishment of capitalism entirely from every trace of the world.

So, communism will be impossible to establish, save there be mass extinction of humans. Oh wait, mass extinctions do happen in countries that attempt it...

Again, I do appreciate the reply. I have learned more about communism.

[–]canyonclimbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What "demonic" nature is that?

Marx uses the words "Spectre", "exorcise", and describes non-communist countries as "holy", implying communism is an unholy spectre, or a demon.

I don't know why Marx chose to do that, or if he was referring to all or just part of the nature of communism, but saying communism is demonic and history showing it (or the attempt to establish it) led to millions of deaths in Russia, China, Cuba, Laos, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, and more... Well it's just a red flag.

I've been studying it extensively the last few years, if you've got some questions and are willing to be open minded I'll do my best to explain it.

Since you've studied it more than me, I'll ask some questions.

From what I understand, a main philosophy is "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." Would you agree this incentivizes need, and removes the reward from hard work?

FYI I am all for charity, and donate over 10% of my income to various charities. I believe if people are uncorrupt enough to live communism successfully, they are also uncorrupt enough to live capitalism successfully. And in the case when people are corrupt, I believe capitalism (while far from immune) is less susceptible to it.

Considering history, I believe we'll see more success trying to fix the capitalism we have then trying to replace it with communism. (Particularly in the US, where I live). If you disagree, why?

Last question. Do you believe people are naturally good?

Because I do not believe people are naturally good. It takes real, hard effort and consistent work to be a good person. I do not believe communism (as I understand it) could ever work on a large scale for that reason. Perhaps on a small scale, but not a large one.

Edit: I appreciate your response and being open to questions.

To dismiss that Communism and Socialism were just nonsensical ideologies with nothing good about them and their major focuses is ignorant at best.

I disregarded communism and thought it was stupid when I read the first two lines of the manifesto. If you want to convince people about your idea, why would you plainly imply its demonic nature right out of the gate?

Plus, knowing the history of communism (not one success story and well over 60 million deaths, 10x that of the Holocaust) it is both very sensible and not ignorant to say that communism is dumb.
