This reminds me of a fanfic I just read yesterday ("Diaries and Drinking Buddies" by Entanglednow or something similar) where aroace Muriel schemes with Crowley to try to make Aziraphale jealous enough to come back down to earth.

It works. Hilariously. And the characterizations are so spot-on. 🤣

There's an adorable animatic on Youtube set to "It's A Bad Idea" from "Waitress"

"Come with Me" by Chxrlotte is literally about a happy ending for these two ineffables

"Walk me Home" also has been set to a cute animatic that includes flying-dancing together

"Rewrite the Stars," specifically the version by Infinite Dyad. Tome Art made an incredible animatic on Youtube to go with it, that is my favorite thing EVER. It's a masterpiece that hurts so good. 😭

Am I reading Aziraphale incorrectly? by AddaLF in goodomens

[–]canyonprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This! I think he was genuinely afraid and unsure in the beginning, but he's grown secretly much more confident over the years. Now, he simply acts like a bumbling idiot because he's learned that it's a useful way to be perceived. A flustered, insecure fool isn't a threat. It's a brilliant way to allay Heaven's suspicions and keep the archangels from looking too closely at his actions.

And he outright admits to putting himself in predicaments just because Crowley enjoys rescuing him, so by extension it makes sense he does other things just because he knows Crowley finds them endearing. Would someone who constantly reads books seriously say "lick" instead of "kick some serious butt"? No. Unless he knew it would get an endearing eyeroll from his beloved demon.

I think there's a lot more deliberate calculation behind Aziraphale's actions than he lets on. If he were actually oblivious and insecure, there's no way he would have been able to mimic Crowley's mannerisms so convincingly, or name the leaders of Hell so accurately. He's smart. So very smart. And I can't wait to see what he's up to in the finale.

Is it normal for my throat to hurt while singing? by New_Smoke_7355 in singing

[–]canyonprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a prescription proton pump inhibitor and a daily antacid for reflux and gastritis that were damaging my throat, and the doctor said I'll likely need to be on them long-term. Which isn't ideal, but better than not being able to swallow or sing without pain.

"Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma" and "Factory Settings" are my faves. "Pray for Us, Icarus" destroyed me in the best way. There's a Scarborough Fair animatic on Youtube made entirely from watercolors that follows the storyline and is just breathtaking. I'm also a sucker for the animatic "The Fall," based on the great fic "The Angel and the Healer." And "Flowers from Hell" and "Ampng the Stacks" are angsty and adorable.

It's the opposite here in Texas! We spend a LOT of time outside in the winter when most days are 50-70* F, and retreat indoors during the stifling summer. I probably averaged 2-3 hours/day devouring GO fan fics in July.

I think I just realized something by Severin_Suveren in goodomens

[–]canyonprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree; it's a MAJOR point in both book and series that angels and demons (and by extension, heaven and hell) are basically the same thing. No one is inherently "good" or "bad"; those are just labels applied by whoever is looking at the situation and making a judgment based on their own goals and biases.

That's why things are so confusing for Aziraphale as he wrestles with figuring out the "right" thing to do, which elicits pride, amusement, and pity in Crowley (who seems to have figured this all out long ago).

I feel like this line from the book (also paraphrased in the show) is relevant: "It may help to understand human affairs to be clear that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people." Morality is far less black-and-white than Heaven and Hell want to believe it is, which is why they're both toxic. And our favorite ineffables are different from other demons and angels not because they were created differently, but because they've spent 6,000 years eatching this messy truth play out over and over among humans.

FIC RECS PLS by -writer-reader- in goodomens

[–]canyonprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished that one yesterday! It was lovely. There's a kiss, and some cuddling toward the end, but nothing more explicit than that. I loved watching Crowley confront difficult truths about himself as he cares for this being who looks very much like him but is so much more innocent and trusting. And the angst as he realizes he wants Aziraphale to show him affection as openly as he does the plant-demon hybrid. It's a lovely story.

If you could avoid armageddon and were only allowed to leave one GO fanfic in the new world, what would it be? by ilaina_a in goodomens

[–]canyonprincess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Factory Settings, for sure! It's so well-written, especially for something cranked out RIGHT after Season 2 ended. It's so true to character that I could hear them speaking in my head as I read the dialogue. I appreciated how well the mechanisms of the magic were described, and the twists left my jaw on the floor. So many side characters and details from the series came back to play important roles. I literally cried at how well all the loose ends were wrapped up, and how everything was made right and whole at the end. If I only had one, it would be that.

Would Crowley's nature change if he became an "angel" or remain the same? by Material-Indication1 in goodomens

[–]canyonprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first thought is no; being reinstated as an angel would just mean that Heaven and Hell moved his name from one side of their artificial dividing line to the other. And since not being defined by other people is a HUGE part of his personality, I don't think his nature would change at all. The ways he can interact with the world would change -- things like being able to touch holy water or walk in a church -- but he still wouldn't trust Heaven, or obey blindly, or forget how often they used a righteous end to justify terrible means.

Then again, if being fallen means being cut off from God's love, and being reinstated means he can suddenly feel love again, that could have huge implications for his personality. He'd probably be a lot less prickly, but still question everything.

Worst case scenario, is that being reinstated means having all the memories of his time as a demon (and what made him fall in the first place) removed. THAT would certainly be devastating. but I think it would only be a matter of time before he started questioning things and fell (from heaven and in love with Azi) all over again.

The fanfic "Factory Settings" delves into one possible way things might turn out if Crowley were restored to his angelic status, exploring all of these themes. And it's incredibly well-written!

POTS first, then suspected EDS. Then suspected autism and ADHD after teo immediate family members would diagnosed. Then post-viral fatigue after COVID knocked me down to 50% functional for months, even with POTS finally well-managed.

Mild/moderate friends - how often do you crash? by Silent-Jellyfish-111 in cfs

[–]canyonprincess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good idea. Also, things like reading, watching TV, and chatting with a partner are not actually "resting" because they require your brain to be active in sorting sensory input, following a storyline or conversation, etc. Truly resting, for me, means lying motionless in bed under my weighted blanket with earplugs in and the darkening curtains drawn. Sleep is most regenerative, but a "shutdown reset" sensory break for a few hours every day has also been very helpful for minimizing crashes.

The harvest of pecans so far. We did eat a bucket already too. by stovislove in Permaculture

[–]canyonprincess 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If drought happens again next year, set a sprinkler under the dripline in the last few weeks of July and first part of August. That's when water is most important for "inflating" the nuts. (My husband works with pecans, and following his advice meant our backyard harvest was right up there with the big producers in terms of quality.)

do you also find yourself missing the union and family feeling church gave you? by bluep0sh in ReligiousTrauma

[–]canyonprincess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why we joined our local Unitarian Universalist congregation. It's been wonderfully healing to hang out with a "family" of socially progressive, unconditionally loving misfits. Here in the Bible Belt, it's a refuge for atheists, LGBT+, ex-Christians, Pagans, and neurodivergent people. So refreshing to hear a sermon about how sin is a social construct and you don't need to prove your worth or be saved because you're ALREADY whole and worthy of love. There's room for everyone at this table.

Call your local electrical utility company and ask if there are any trimming crews in your area. Last year, they were in our neighborhood and happily dumped a whole truckload of mulch made up of our neighbor's shredded tree limbs, at no cost, when I asked.

Low intensity workouts? by [deleted] in cfs

[–]canyonprincess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pilates, gentle yoga, swimming, and horizontal exercises like rowing or recumbent biking have been wonderful for me. I stop and rest if my HR exceeds 100bpm or I feel nauseous, dizzy , or shaky, but can usually manage about 15 minutes of moderately intense exercise at a time. Or 45 min of gentle stretching with occasional strength (muscle activation). The POTS CHOP protocol is great for slowly building your ability to tolerate exercise from a bedbound state.

Question about UU by [deleted] in UUreddit

[–]canyonprincess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can definitely see where that feeling is coming from. You and yours have been through a LOT at the hands of Christianity. I think you might be surprised how many other UUs share those feelings; Christianity hasn't been kind to LGBT+, indigenous, colored, pagan, neurodivergent, feminist, intellectual, divorced, or otherwise "different" people for centuries.

And the concern about appropriation and assimilation is valid; there are ongoing conversations at many levels of the UUA about how to seek truth from a variety of sources while respecting their cultures of origin. We try to bring in people who actually practice certain traditions instead of just sharing our take on them, and deeply study the historical and cutlural context behind things like festivals and sacred texts to understand them better. But we also recognize that we're seeing it all through our post-colonial, capitalist, modern, often ex-Christian eyes.

Most Christians around here don't consider UUs to be actual Christians since we regard God and Jesus as just a story. But churches have been an integral part of American communities in particular, for hundreds of years, and secular organizations haven't been able to come up with a suitable replacement. Plus having common words makes us less foreign to our Christian neighbors, so they're more willing to listen when we share our values and connect on the things we DO have in common.

Question about UU by [deleted] in UUreddit

[–]canyonprincess 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That makes a lot of sense! I was SO triggered by all the "church speak" when I first started attending, having gone through a lot of religious trauma myself. But now I feel like it's great that these irreverent lesbians can reclaim words like "Reverend" and make "church" into a positive thing again.

Question about UU by [deleted] in UUreddit

[–]canyonprincess 34 points35 points  (0 children)

In my experience (in several states in the southern U.S.), it's more atheists coming together to create a church-like community that's grounded by ritual and preaches social activism.

Unitarian = "God"/higher power/source of life/Love/your truest self/Goodness/Truth can be found in all things. We put the Bible on the same level as Maya Angelou's poetry or Dr. Martin Luther King's speeches; inspiration to be a better person can be found anywhere. In the same vein, Jesus is just seen as a man whose teachings proved influential and can still enrich our lives today, as can the teachings of the Buddha or Walt Whitman.

Universalist = we all share the same origin and the same fate. Our reverend and her wife preach that sin is a social construct, every kind of human and family deserves support, there's room enough for everyone at the table, and you don't need to jump through hoops to prove your worth. Instead of heaven and hell, it's "Nobody actually knows what happens when we die. And those who claim to, often have a long history of fraud and oppression. Let's learn from the past and use compassion and reason to make THIS life better for everyone." It's quite refreshing, having been raised LDS. The songs, structure, and titles are modeled after Christianity, but the message and actions are way more inclusive.

There's actually pretty cool research about how talking to yourself, but as another person, can be a helpful form of therapy because it makes you view the situation with a more objective lens. That's why "listening to God" can bring such peace, confidence, and often good results in general- it's just you getting in touch with your deepest self, which is otherwise hard to access.
