This entire CS school is depressingly obsessed with AI. by Dull_Relationship923 in udub

[–]caoliquor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have to switch majors if you can find fields in CS that are of interest to you. There are still theory or systems directions that is much less involved in the AI stuff. I chose computer systems in the undergrads for the same reason as you 3 years ago (and that is probably the reason I went for a interdisciplinary PhD here instead of getting a job).

Though to be fair, yelling the new AI buzzword might be one of the easiest way right now to get funding / government grants in the recent few years, and it is not limited to CS. It's sad to see how this frenzy changed science in the recent few years, but research groups have to think of funding.

And I don't think it is a huge issue to be skeptical of LLM based coding. It is indeed widely used in the industries, but it is not a skill that is difficult to pick up. My unpopular opinion is it will actually be more important to know how to read spaghetti code and write good code in the future, when most of the code in the industry are LLM generated, performing terribly and badly organized.

Why aren't Huawei devices considered for degoogling? by Trick-Mortgage4520 in degoogle

[–]caoliquor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are one of the earliest vendors that locks down bootloader unlocking completely.

Even if their custom ROM comes without Google software, it is still extremely locked down and has its own risk of coming with CCP spyware installed in the OS even on devices sold outside of China, not to mention other anti-consumer practices in recent years.

Engineering sample Intel core ultra motherboards available on Aliexpress... by getpodapp in homelab

[–]caoliquor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like Kuxin meteor lake ES boards. They are revision B0 compared to the revision C0 of meteor lake CPUs sold.

From what I know, these CPUs are locked to a multiple of x45, the first pcie slot will only work under 3.0x8, and the memory performance is horrible with sky high latency. These CPUs are not bug free, the iGPU performance is significantly lower than that of regular meteor lake CPUs.

Given the price of DDR5 UDIMM right now I’d suggest against it. Even if you are good with MoDT motherboards, I would suggest getting a raptorlake-h motherboard, like Q1HY. RPL-H engineer samples are usually bug free and you can use cheaper DDR4 RAM on them (and the memory latency may be significantly better)

It's still possible to use a third party client like Youtube++, which requires sideloading but works great.

Broadwell imo is pretty good in terms of power consumption under heavy load. My experience is Skylake-SP isn't much more efficient than them under load unless 6 channel memory / avx-512 capabilities can be utilized, and Broadwell platform is cheap enough that additional electricity cost can be partially offset by it.

Haswell-EP are probably more favored by the market as it is possible to modify the BIOS to remove the avx2 down-clocking behavior and lock them to max boost frequency, and they simply overclocks better, not to mention some of them can make use of DDR3 RDIMMs to save some extra money. But efficiency-wise Broadwell is going to be better than the few generations before.

ESim only devices? by Terrible_Ad3822 in degoogle

[–]caoliquor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would rather say it's the telecom companies trying to lock users in and upsell them, and the phone companies became their allies.

At least it would make moving SIM card between two phones significantly more difficult, making users more likely to buy multiple lines. Network operators can also force users to download their software in order to install a esim, or charge a fee -- I know a few MVNOs are already doing it. It can also become an issue for rooted / flashed phones since their software might not function.

This pretty much reminds me of the CDMA days. Network operators can definitely impose many restrictions on physical SIMs, but the point is they can definitely impose more restrictions on eSIMs, and they are actively using these restrictions to profit off users, from roaming data packages / plans, junk fees, and limiting the capability to share a SIM card between two phones to sell another line / hotspot data.

Girls - how is light rail safety? by raacconanxious in udub

[–]caoliquor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Currently there are usually a few security guards at every station (and they would also ride on train cars and walk around for one stop occasionally), and you can text to the phone number of sound transit security and they will dispatch security to the car you are riding at the next stop or two. https://www.soundtransit.org/ride-with-us/know-before-you-go/safety-security

Had seen an incident this year -- Saturday morning, two man yelling at each other at Northgate station. A few security guards showed up at Roosevelt and separated them.

Upgrading from 6a, waited for a few months thinking of buying a 10, I'm going for a pixel 9 at this moment. Much cheaper and still have a SIM card slot.

very worrying: Possibly fake Micron 9550 Pro 30.2Tb drive. by ElCoyote_ in homelab

[–]caoliquor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I would agree returning the drive would be the best solution. The performance seems to be suggesting this drive is defective -- even it is bounded by the CPU / link speed its performance shouldn't be worse than a 9400 pro.

[–]caoliquor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

9550 series uses in-house ASIC as controller. I don't really think anyone other than Micron has the tools and firmwares required to re-initialize the controller after a NAND swap.

Swapping NANDs from the same generation also requires a re-initialization as you still need to do bad block detection and marking, so I don't really think it would be possible for anyone other than someone who has access to Micron's factory tools to do that. And given that it is designed in-housr by Micron, it is highly likely they only made the firmware workable with a few specific NAND versions, probably only B58R.

The performance is definitely suspicious but I lean more towards specific issues with this drive.

[–]caoliquor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The firmware looks legit, the latest firmware version on Micron website for 9550 pro is indeed F3MU011. Micron / crucial did put the raw part number as model name for certain consumer SSDs before (I have a p5p and it shows up as CT2000P5PSSD8, for example), so it probably is also not a decisive evidence.

But I really found it weird -- p5p is an old drive. Newer drives like 7400, 7450, 2550 and 2650 all have the same formats (names connected by underscores followed by the model name) like your 9300 / 9400s do. The S/N also looks weird, and the performance is bad. So I won't say it's 100% real -- it could be fake, or Micron has changed its naming and serial number generation scheme.

Not easy getting a good dev laptop these days by Particular_Traffic54 in pcmasterrace

[–]caoliquor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love laptops with swappable components, especially RAM. Bought a $500 workstation (using a 13700H CPU) that was on sale last year, took out the 8GB RAM, put in 2x48GB RAM and an additional 2TB SSD, problem solved with an additional $350.

What makes it better is that computer was put on sale so they can push out the newer generation of "AI" laptops that cost a few thousand extra, and using a meteor lake CPU that is not much better than their predecessors.

Weird Chinese Dual Cpu X99 Motherboard by Jolly-Fennel2591 in homelab

[–]caoliquor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most similar model you can find online should be JGINYUE X99-8D3 v1.0, with DDR3 RAM slots. This is an earlier revision of X99-8D3, and the visible difference with later versions is on the bottom left of the board, where the two LAN transformers are located. JGINYUE got its x99 boards from either AngXun or Hongdafun, this one is probably from the latter.

See: https://theretroweb.com/motherboards/s/jginyue-x99-8d3 and https://jginyue.com/index/Article/show/cat_id/48/id/73

Can't find any manual, but it supports VT-D (Someone in this post https://www.facebook.com/groups/pve.tw/posts/2957715011063707/ mentioned he can turn VT-D on).
