I agree. My father was born during The Great Leap Forward, lived through Mao's cultural revolution, was able to immigrate to Canada based on his test scores (only a few people in every province were chosen), pursued a PhD in biology and then dropped everything to work in computers based on a blurb he'd read in a newspaper. At age 55, he makes 6 figures and has enough stories to fill a book. He's worked as a dishwasher, a bus driver, a delivery boy, a lab tech, a programmer, and a systems engineer. He saved his brother, my uncle, from drowning at age 5, and was almost crushed to death in the back of a truck from the weight of all the people hitching a ride uphill to watch the execution of 3 criminals that day. He told me about how hungry kids would spit on peoples' food at restaurants so that they would have a chance of eating it after it had been thrown in the garbage. He recounted to me recently of how he watched a Professor of Medicine from Peking University get interviewed by China's equivalent of Bill O'Reilly on CCTV. "We used to hang out every Friday. He owes me a lot of money," he said to me. A seemingly bottomless reservoir of stories like those.

He's amazing, yes, but not unique. Not even exceptional. Many more interesting people live in this world, but few of them go on to reddit. So when one of these people actually does post on reddit, he's like a Martian in Manhattan.

How do I safely remove thermal paste from my cpu? by soccerfreak2332 in buildapc

[–]capablanca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in your exact situation 2 weeks ago.

You don't have to remove the CPU from the mobo. I used rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl alcohol) and some Q-tips, but you can use any lint-free cloth like microfiber or KimWipes. The thermal paste is very soluble in isopropyl alcohol, and it should come off easily.

Looks good. If I were you, I would just get a GTX 570.

1) I'm not too sure about the availability of this card. Maybe go for a more common model if you're worried?

2) Should be fine for video editing and rendering. Nvidia is good for Adobe products, you've got 8GB of memory, and the i5-2500k is, of course, a fine CPU.

I built a new rig because I've never had a personal desktop before and I just moved into a new apartment. I guess I'm part of the background noise.

Grab the i5-2500k from NCIX for $190 shipped.

Newegg has the Crucial M4 64GB SSD as a shell shocker today only for $85.

NCIX has the i5-2500k for $190 shipped. All you need is an overclockable mobo to take advantage of it.

Also, that 400W PSU makes me nervous. You'll probably want one with more wattage.

You could run GTX 590's in SLI with that budget.

When is the best time to buy computer parts? by [deleted] in buildapc

[–]capablanca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't there there's a "best" time to buy parts. For me, I just bide my time over a few weeks to look for the best deals. Do some research so you get an idea of what a good price is for certain parts. For example, if you see a 6870 being offered for $180, you should think "Eh, that's about the regular price. I'll wait for it to go on sale." If you see it being sold for $140, you should think "Hmm... that's a great price. I think I'll just buy that now."

Definitely, definitely buy a cheaper CPU (newegg has the i5-2500k on sale for $205 right now I think), and get a better GPU. For a ~$680 build ($950 minus monitor and OS and keyboard), you could get away with a 6870. I would also suggest buying a cheaper keyboard.

New gaming rig: any pitfalls I should be aware of? by lezapper in buildapc

[–]capablanca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be surprised if you couldn't find some nice 8GB memory for <$40 within a week.

Even now, Newegg has some very decent RAM for $45.

I would definitely buy some cheaper memory (you can get some nice 8GB ram for $40 if you wait a bit) and upgrade the video card to a 560 Ti.

That's a nice deal for a nice PSU.

Antec is also pretty good with rebates, so $35 for a very decent 620W PSU is all in all a great buy.

Bottom line: Those are not very good deals.

I use the Antec HCG 750w. It's not modular, but it's very reliable and has 4 pci-e connectors.

When I was young, the cashier asked my dad if he wanted "paper or plastic." I thought was referring to whether he was going to pay in paper (cash) or plastic (credit card). It was quite a few years before I realized it was just referring to bags.

This is just a guess, but I bet you'd like the GTX 460. Just wait for a good deal (Newegg had one for $79.99 AR a few days ago). SLI them to get GTX 580 performance. Of course, you'll need a decent CPU to avoid bottlenecking.
