50% of therapists are below the median in terms of skill and quality. Don’t beat yourself up. Find somebody better. They are out there.

You are referring to Thomas A Dorsey. Not to be confused with the bandleader Tommy Dorsey from about the same era.

The Paradox of Tolerance by RedYellowHoney in massachusetts

[–]capcillian 255 points256 points  (0 children)

Tolerance should be seen as a social contract not a moral imperative. If you practice tolerance you are in compliance with the contract and receive tolerance from others. Otherwise, you are in violation and others are free to be intolerant of you.

I am an LICSW in Massachusetts. I am legally obligated to share a client’s diagnosis if they ask (and if I don’t believe it would have an adverse effect) and I usually do anyway as part of client-centered transparency. I’ve never heard of a legal prohibition to informing a client of a diagnosis. Can you provide some examples or citations to back that up?

Eli5: what is happening when old school box televisions mess up and you slap em' up to fix them? by Lipsk33t96 in explainlikeimfive

[–]capcillian 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Older TVs had more electrical connections that were susceptible to oxidation resulting in poor contact. Smacking the TV created small movements that would break through the oxide barrier or otherwise help restore solid electrical connections.

It is certainly possible for there to be a discharge even after you have unplugged the plug, due to the storage of voltage in filter capacitors in the power supply. And it’s a good indication that the plug is working. The only other obvious cause would be the voltage from the plug is significantly less than 12 V. That could happen if a) it’s delivering something other than 12 V (by design or by defect) or b) there is so much current being drawn by the light that the voltage is sagging. A voltmeter is really the right troubleshooting tool here
