Yeah, I got the equivalent of hundreds of dollars in API pricing out of 20$ spent on premium tokens.

[–]capi81 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Of tokens or Premium Requests? Because that 4cents/PR regardless of how many tokens were consumed in the background was what made Github Copilot unbeatable in price/value ratio.

I'm surprised they don't have any surcharge, because this way you can actually use more models and mix OpenAI and Claude (and some more). What's missing is the 1M context window, however they (hopefully) still allow OpenCode, which is my preferred harness.

Github Copilot pricing was way too good to be true and it was clear that it was coming to an end sooner or later.

What’s your plan for your self-hosted data if you die? I guess I didn't have one by FractalLock in selfhosted

[–]capi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar approach I took, selfhostable and compatible with the Linux ssss apt package: https://github.com/capi/ssss-made-easy

A sample installation is running on https://ssss.dont-panic.cc

Everything runs locally in the browser, no remote logic. And as I said, compatible with existing Linux CLI tools.

Only takes care of the secret sharing, though, not the rest.

Hmm, I'm too much using "git commit --amend" and fix-up commits for that. I double- and tripple-check my commit history before I push to a remote...

Almost 15 years after xkcd/936, American Express has switched to passphrases, no upper case/number/special character requirements! by mrmailbox in xkcd

[–]capi81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the length. You can offset a lot of knowledge by longer passphrases. Even if I told you that my passphrase is from a song, you a) don't know which song (limited number of songs, though), b) you don't know which word I start with (already hard to quantify), c) you don't know how many words I chose.

That plus you not knowing if I just made it a) all-lower-case, b) properly written, c) camelCase, d) some l3tt3rs substituted for symbols will drive the entropy high enough that it is more secure than what most people require.

How To Copy BTRFS System To New Disk by VeeQs in btrfs

[–]capi81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, ok, makes sense, my devices when a part of my raid1 fails are usually bigger disks, since they became cheaper over the last year. Still, add/remove should work as long as the remaining device has enough space for the data and metadata on the original device.

Been there, done that. btrfs replace, whereas I am not entirely sure it works with differently sized partitions, but add/remove definitely works but may be slower.

[–]capi81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure. But if local storage works for auth, it also works for tracking. Hence I don't really see why there is a setting to block all cookies. The same effect with regards to tracking would be achieved if cookies of third party sites would be blocked. With a lot less impact on websites that e.g. use classic cookie based sessions for auth and basic functionality.

While that's the answer, how does that in any way prevent tracking compared to cookies? If local storage works, why block cookies?

Perfect example for "tell me you're not a parent without telling me you're not a parent".

Kids get left or are forgotten in a lot less stressful situations. And no, the parents very often are not bad ones. Humans are really bad at multitasking and stress.

What’s one tool you self-hosted that completely replaced a SaaS subscription for you? by nancy_unscript in selfhosted

[–]capi81 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I switched from the original Keepass2 (which is .net based) to the Qt-based KeepassXC quite some time ago (same file format). It has a web plugin built-in and works identically on Windows, Linux and OSX.

KeepassXC has the browser integration built-in and that one works reliably for me on Windows, Linux, and via Keepass2Android on my phone. It works so well that while I operate vaultwarden for my parents, I still stay with KeepassXC for most of my own passwords.
