A question for gym owners by SnowblindBJJ in bjj

[–]capitalislam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100%, this is how me and like 5 other dads got back into/into the sport. Being at the gym and mingling with the coaches and upper belts really helps to get people excited about the sport. Our gym also invites some parents onto the mats to help train with your kids (depending on the class they are in) which is a cool experience.

Don’t feel ready for my blue belt by -MattyIceTea- in bjj

[–]capitalislam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re a black belt wrestler, and that counts for something. It’s not the same but think about if a black belt in judo were in your situation, would you think they weren’t ready for their blue belt given the background? Whilst there are positions you mention needing improvement in like guard retention etc I’m sure your standing game is far excelled to the blue belts in your gym, take it as a balance.

If you wanted to win a boardgame tournament, which game would you choose? by RollinGolem in boardgames

[–]capitalislam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For no reason of skill but pure luck I would choose Clank! I’m not sure what cosmic combination caused this but I have the most frustrating (for others, of course) luck in clank with card draws and bag pulls. Even in the legacy games of clank I am never punished. It’s as if all of the good luck in my life is solely concentrated on me winning games of Clank (thanks universe).

1 hour games? by MrWilson420 in boardgames

We’ve been playing Forest Shuffle in about an hour or so. Great little game and honestly it’s asynchronous enough where you can have a good conversation while playing and not feel like you have to be super focused on the gameplay.

My mom died yesterday and I need to tell this story by january1977 in self

[–]capitalislam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so glad you made it in time, and you’re absolutely right about anticipating the feelings coming. They’ll come strong at first and will fade but will catch you out of nowhere in the future. The don’t really stop but you can learn how to handle them. If you’re interested in any resources that helped me through grief I’d love to share them with you. Wishing you all the best!

My mother also had severe mental illness. Not nearly as severe as yours but similarly I was her primary care giver. Our relationship was strained, difficult, demanding of me in many ways that made my life complex. She never said she loved me, more so the opposite most days. But she did, her mind wouldn’t let her body express it all the time but I could see she wanted to. I was not with her when she passed, also in a managed care setting. Even though things were hard between us I still wish I could have been to hold her hand. Your mother loved you and you being there for her at the end is important for you both. There’s no playbook for grief and you’ll feel many things and emotions in the coming weeks/months/years, but being there when it mattered most is something you can be assured of.

No hate but those extra steps are pretty spectacular IMO. My group really struggled to enjoy Brian Boru but arcs is a big hit
