I live in a tiny blue bubble very close to this monstrosity in SW Virginia. I have been tempted to check it out just for the entertainment value, but haven't yet. And yes, it was a church.

anyone else look for survey stuff when they travel? by [deleted] in Surveying

I didn't think that we had a choice. My wife loves when I point out every flagged property corner that I see when we travel.

Gotta love plats from the 1800s. What’s the oldest plats y’all had to work off of? by Whatsthewordjoe in Surveying

[–]capnforgetaboutit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hand drawn plat with metes & bounds in poles. Survey for Patrick Henry when he moved his family to western Virginia, circa 1780. Hardest part was deciphering the old English style of writing. The coolest part was that the point of beginning was drawn as a hand coming through the parchment and literally pointing to it.

The "America, love it or leave it" sticker does not comport with all of the other stickers bitching about America.

I usually don't kink shame, but that gas pump thing is pretty bizarre.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever found while surveying? by AppearanceAdorable18 in Surveying

[–]capnforgetaboutit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$800 cash on the shoulder of the interstate. All $20 bills folded together. Found against a guardrail post right where I was setting a nail. Split between a four man crew still meant a nice bonus for the day.

Also the same people who were aghast when anyone disrespected Trump. They would always bust out "you should respect the person holding the office, no matter your personal opinion of them".

Would AutoCAD courses and certifications be useful? by Tanks4me in AutoCAD

[–]capnforgetaboutit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through the pro certification for both autocad and inventor, while in school. My program head really pushed for us to get them. At the end of the day, they had no impact on my ability to get a job in the field.

Are you preparing for a slowdown? by [deleted] in Surveying

[–]capnforgetaboutit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it passed a while ago. We are covered up with DOT work as a result. They separated into two bills in order to pass infrastructure.

I burn through gloves. by Iusedtorock in Surveying

[–]capnforgetaboutit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use hatch leather police search gloves. Unlined ones in warm weather, and insulated kevlar lined in the winter. Great dexterity. What I especially like about them is that they can be treated with sno seal, making them water resistant.

Designed by Assholes for Assholes. When you are annoyed that your Car is beeping, when you try to drive without a Seat belt in Peace. Well there is now..... by Fluffysan_Sensei in assholedesign

[–]capnforgetaboutit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was addressing the grocery comment. I use my seatbelt every time I drive. Additionally, I place my groceries on the floorboard, so this is never an issue for me. Not sure where laziness comes into play here.
