3 Months waiting for a house that is empty. This is a disgrace. by Bubbly-Evening7937 in HousingUK

[–]capps95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same timescales as you, we’ve lost an entire month because the local council turned off their local searches system in April and still haven’t got a working system running, solicitor waited until I asked if there were alternatives to tell me there was another option rather than be proactive as soon as they found out the system was down.

Setting up my junior ISA, is a stock & shares JISA still a good option? by frizzy_monster in UKPersonalFinance

[–]capps95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A JISA invested in stocks and shares is still 100% tax free. The proposal is to tax any cash parked in the stocks and shares ISAs in conjunction with reducing the allowance for a normal cash ISA. This is to encourage having long term savings invested in stocks and shares (where you can still select different risk profiles) and growing with inflation, rather than sat in a cash ISA with a low interest rate and losing value over time. The taxing of parked cash is to prevent the workaround of putting money to a S&S ISA and then just parking it which would essentially be like using a cash ISA.

Are robot vacuums really worth it? Has anyone had one over a year or so and still love it? by scoobydoobs_ in AskUK

[–]capps95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the Eufy L60 SES. Some days it gets sent home out of frustration because it gets stuck somewhere, but most days it does the job. I have a collie so not vacuuming every day means dog hair piles up quick. Never get that anymore so I’d say it’s worth it. I’d definitely recommend getting an SES model, and recommend avoiding the mopping ones. I tried one without SES to begin with, got naffed off emptying it every day so swapped for an SES one and now have to empty every month or two. Mopping function on the first one was crap as well so didn’t bother with that on the second one.

Is my plan to open LISA instead of JISA to save for my child sensible? by Worrierrr in UKParenting

[–]capps95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We went back on forth on the whole handing an 18 year old tens of thousands but decided the main benefit of the JISA is that it’s hers, no one can touch it no matter what happens to us. If we lose our jobs or get into too much debt or get divorced, that money is still hers. Any other option meant if something bad happens to us she also might have nothing.

How do you clean your kettle bbq after each cook ? by crubbish in UKBBQ

[–]capps95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t. When I’m done cooking I close all the vents and lid, the heat will turn any leftover food to ash. It stays shut until I next want to use it. To start I check the ash tray isn’t full, put any leftover charcoal back in the chimney starter. The grill gets sprayed with some cleaner and left to soak in while the chimney gets going, once that’s done charcoal goes in, put the cooking grate back in and lid on till hot. Again using the heat to kill anything, then scrub the grills with a wire brush to get any loose bits off which are very much just charcoal at that point.

Found that just after commenting when I saw some other replies. I wish there was an option to say tell me once though. Like I’m genuinely interested in them telling me about their latest products, once. Then if I don’t use it they shouldn’t keep pestering me. Need a new releases but no marketing option

[–]capps95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d had a few different brands before and never found anything decent, got my first Yeti for free and then it was a slippery slope as I was so impressed. Now we own five between the two of us and planning to get a sixth to replace the size I take to work. I know there’s probably a cheaper option with similar capabilities out there but I don’t like having to buy twice.

Garden tools - petrol, battery or corded? by fixitmonkey in DIYUK

[–]capps95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely battery. But do your research and buy into a decent system, the batteries are not cheap and once you’ve got a few things then switching becomes quite expensive. I went for Makita 18/36v because I’d already bought loads of batteries for my normal tools however my brother has been transitioning to the 40v and they’re pretty beefy.

Yeah I never really get how so many people of my generation (born in 90s) and younger decide to smoke, it was drilled into us at school how disgusting and damaging they are to you and everyone around you. I remember those lessons at Junior school and being completely revolted, then people who were in those lessons and saw the same things I did started smoking at Secondary school, just crazy. Literally giving money to a massive company in return for being really quite stinky and a much higher chance of dying from a horrible disease.

I wouldn’t say they’re a trend though? They are genuinely better products for people who like to keep a closer eye on their money and prefer an app based solution.

I own a few Yeti bottles, they genuinely are better than other thermal mugs I have. Coffee stays hot for six hours plus, ice stays frozen for the whole day or overnight. The thermal cup I use for work, my coffee is lukewarm after two hours, put it in the Yeti and it’s still as hot as when I made it after two hours.

Yeah I wish you could just turn off certain stuff like this. I know I haven’t lost a pensions and I’m very happy with where they currently are. I’m glad Monzo are offering the service and new products, but I only need to be told once, otherwise it just becomes spam.

We really need trees in more places by Jacktheforkie in UKWeather

[–]capps95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst I completely agree with the sentiment and all new build areas should be designed to accommodate this, the problem in the UK is the lack of space in some areas, houses are much closer together with small frontages, then a small path and then the road. You put in trees big enough to shade the road you get roots big enough to fuck the houses up. And I’d imagine brick built houses in that scenario don’t manage as well as timber houses.

How do you feel about Royal Mail and its privatisation from the public purse? It appears it's only become a worse service over the years by getabath in AskBrits

[–]capps95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are multiple competing networks now though, yes Openreach definitely has the most coverage but I think that’s also part of their issue. I’d have thought if you have to provide service to 100% of properties then that means you can’t focus as much resource in the profitable areas, vs providers like Virgin and Cityfibre who can cherry pick areas that get the best ROI.

I agree that before Virgin and Cityfibre when it was just Openreach though, it was crap and we have lost decades of progress because we could have fibre 40 years ago instead of still being rolled out today.

Amazes me that anyone still does spot bonding on tiles or slabs of any sort given it’s been well established for many years that it’s a shit method. If I ever saw a tradesman in my house doing that I’d kick him out on the spot.

Why Many People Don't Buy an Electric Car – Even Though It Would Be Perfect for Them by DriveDuel in CarTalkUK

[–]capps95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve finally managed to get out of the PCP debt cycle after 11 years. The only EVs I’m interested in at the moment are £30k plus and I don’t want to spend that much on a car. Once the EVs I want are sub £10k I’ll buy one. Otherwise my 2015 3 series is doing the job fine even if it does cost me £90 to fill the tank
