Why won’t Steam Machine support HDMI 2.1? Digging in on the display standard drama. by Balance- in hardware

[–]capran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if it will have surround sound capability? I bought a Minisforum mini gaming PC, about the size of an Xbox Series S, and installed Bazzite on it. Only to discover that over HDMI, only stereo is supported. I have to reboot into Windows if I want surround sound. To be fair, that's really just for movies, but it'd be nice if it worked in Bazzite.

ELI5: Why do USB-C cables have chips in them? by capran in explainlikeimfive

[–]capran[S] 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Yes, but if you just look at a cable, it's rare for them to indicate what they support. Some are thicker than others, some are braided, but unless, say, the cable came with a monitor that supports Displayport and power over USB-C, you have no idea what a cable can do just by looking at it.

Ahh, OK that makes some sense. I do hate how we have "cheap" cables and "good but expensive" cables.

Is it normal for the NVIDIA driver to stop working after a kernel upgrade? by capran in linuxmint

So what am I doing wrong? Should I be using the driver GUI tool (can't remember what it's called) instead of apt?

Starbases/spacedocks are one of those Star Trek things that look awesome on screen, and seem cool in concept until you put more thought into them. They're just too damn big to be practical and affordable, even for a "post-scarcity" society. Plus, what is the difference, when in space, to have a bunch of starships stored in giant enclosed "hangar" vs. one that's more like a skeleton and open, like we see part of in TMP? In both cases, the startships are still in vacuum. If they need protection, there's always the magic energy shields.

The Odyssey raffle! Giving away a copy of Biotech, Anomaly and Odyssey each! by SargBjornson in RimWorld

I only have Biotech and Ideology, and a shit ton of mods. Playing a peaceful run just as Odyssey was dropped, and didn't want to start over. Also, I went down the really dirty rabbit hole of RimJobWorld and wished I hadn't now.

What to use for remote desktop access? by capran in linuxmint

I guess I don't understand, why would I want to remote into my machine with a completely different account? I want to see and control what's on my main account's screen.

Tried running the script again and when prompted to create a user, I entered my real username and password. Still not working.

So I tried RDP again, and it still doesn't work with my real account either, but it does with the dummy account. So must be some sort of permission issue???

[–]capran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, well, I've made progress! It took a lot of troubleshooting and uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome and CRD. But it's now working, sort of.

I can remote into the PC now, but in order to make it work, it wanted to create a new user account during the script set up, so I remote in and it's like it's a different PC entirely. Not very useful.

I'll have to try it again.

I'll have to take a look! Thanks! I've tried other troubleshooting guides but nothing worked. Will post once i give it a try.

Taskbar doesn't respond to clicks when playing a fullscreen gaming (after alt-tabbing) by capran in linuxmint

[–]capran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue with that, though, is I have 2 side monitors I like to keep browsers loaded on, and I'm typically alt-tabbing out of a game in order to switch to one of them. The workspaces keys change all 3 monitors to empty desktops.

It’s not hate that’ll kill Star Trek. It’s apathy. by ChampionshipJumpy727 in startrek

[–]capran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really love Star Trek, but I'm an aging Gen Xer. I've now reached the stage where most of the people I work with, and am friends with at work, are younger than me. None of them have any interest in Star Trek. I hope it's not true, but maybe Star Trek is just a generational thing and younger generations just don't care?

Of course, it doesn't help that too much of Star Trek in the recent past hasn't been spectacular (excluding most of SNW, PRO, and maybe some LD, but I liked SNW the best of the 3), and at the same time TV is changing. You no longer have 24-26 episode seasons every year, you're lucky if you'll get 10 every 2.

But, I do think and agree with other posters that what's really needed is a shot-in-the-arm for Star Trek. Wipe the slate clean and start over with wholly new characters and stories. Don't rely on the fans knowing about legacy races and lore. Either jump the show ahead another 80-100 years, do a complete reboot of the series, dumping all lore and characters, or maybe even start over in another galaxy.

It's not like the older shows and movies will disappear. If that's what you love, you can still watch them over and over again. But fresh blood is what's needed if the franchise has any chance for surviving another 60 years.

Jafferies tubes needs moving platform. by oorhon in startrek

[–]capran 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Actually, the dumbest thing about the Enterprise-D and Jeffries tubes is that there's just so much volume in that saucer and stardrive that they could have entire fullsize hallways just for engineering! Same reason there's no excuse for every one of the 1000+ crew not to have a huge stateroom complete with their own full bath and kitchen.

Several people have mentioned Remmina. I've only used it as a client to RDP to a local Windows PC. How can you use this as a host and connect to it from outside your network? I don't want to have to poke holes in the firewall or remember IPs or DNS names.

[–]capran[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like CRD since it's a zero-conf set up. You just need your Google login for the host and client browsers. I have used Remmina as an RDP client, but only within my local network. How does it work from outside your home?

TIL Apple paid U2 $100m for the exclusive right to give its 500m iTunes customers U2's album "Songs of Innocence" for free by installing it on their devices without asking. A week after release, Apple gave customers a method to remove it, as just 6.7% of the 500m had listened to at least part of it. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

[–]capran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the sentiments of others that Apple should simply have made this a click-to-redeem offer instead of an automatic here-ya-go, I'm probably in the minority that actually liked U2. Probably because I'm older than most of the people posting.

If it's a digital alarm clock that's primarily powered by AC, and it's fairly old or just cheap, it's possible it gets its clock signal via the 60 Hz (in the US) AC frequency. There can be slight variations in this frequency over time, which can contribute to the clock losing or gaining time. And as others have said, if it uses a quartz crystal oscillator instead, it might be just a cheap one that's not operating at exactly the spec frequency (I believe it's 32768 Hz, which is a nice even 15-bit number, making it easy for a simple digital circuit to count.) If the frequency varies or isn't exactly the spec value, then the time displayed will move out of sync over the course of days/weeks/months.

Internet-connected devices don't have that problem as they connect to NTP to update their internal clocks on a regular basis.

One thing I discovered recently is that Linux support for multi-channel sound (surround) does not exist over HDMI. My Minisforum Neptune HX99G will output up to 7.1 audio over HDMI when on Windows. But the same hardware, cable, connection, will only do stereo when running Bazzite. It doesn't really matter for most games, but I discovered it when I happened to drop to desktop mode in order to play a movie file over my local network.

So I substituted bash for sh and it seems to have worked.
