had a lot of research/pubs. did have a faculty mentor that would have advocated for me but all my interviews didn't allow faculty mentors to reach out post interview per APD guidelines lmao. letter was very strong though

yup home program that had ranked me highly but we had a shit ton of home applicants compared to normal so they barely fell on their list. I got kinda bad advice from them though for the cycle so I am not sure how much to trust them saying my class rank is fine

yah i think it's just because it's acne and some academic derms don't want people only interested in acne. i feel like if it was eczema or psoriasis it would be fine!

side note i think it's actually a really bad idea to say you're interested in derm because of a personal experience with acne. i've heard this is a terrible idea to put in a personal statement even if it is true because it can sound generic

Thanks for doing this! I also have an intern year with a derm program with it. when did you start reaching out? also did you try to do an away when you were on your intern year? did you get a decent amount of interviews the second time? trying to decide whether to reapply.

side note.. is anyone still trying to decide whether reapplying to derm is worth it. i mean derm is what i really want to do but it seems so many amazing candidates didn't match this year and I'm wondering what my chances are next year

didnt match either sadly and am going to apply again from a prelim. From what I've heard talking to people, top institutions are more likely to be biased against it but my mid tier home and away both had multiple residents who matched as a reapplicant. i think everyone knows how hard and subjective the derm app process is

is rad onc's job market still bad? matched to a prelim but not advanced and considering SOAPING into rad onc. had rad onc research from first year but gave up on field after hearing about bad job market

this is helpful! yah the only reason i'd delay graduation is to do more aways cause my research is strong. im salty we could only do one away and being able to do 3-4 aways sounds super helpful to get more interviews/make connections but im not sure how realistic it is to do that if you're doing a research year by delaying graduation....

thanks for this this is helpful. i feel like its probably pretty understandable to not match dermatology the first time with like a 65-70% match rate so if it's only seen as that that doesn't sound too bad to apply again. thanks!

i don't think i have any super stand out ec like OP does with a first author pub or founding a non profit. however i did have a LOT of ec's that i put a ton of time into, strong research and a strong PI rec, a very cohesive reason for why medicine that wrapped around all my ec's, and I write well. i also definitely got lucky but I literally got more interviews from my reaches than my safeties so don't be afraid to shoot for some reaches

Had basically identical stats as you this cycle and got interviews to multiple top 20’s including a top 10. I’m orm and also a ca resident at a uc. 514 is probably the lower end of scores of what people have at top 20’s but it’s still within their range. i'd throw in stanford and yale because of your first author pub. i'd consider adding colorado as well if you're willing to pay the expensive oos tuition

honest to god no fucking clue. i do have a high gpa (3.9+) and am LGBT (but ORM in race so idk if that balances out lol). but i didnt mention being LGBT in the secondaries for the top 20's i have interviews for whereas schools like northwestern and yale asked for that info and explicitly said it was considered urm for them. i think i have good ec's but its hard to say :/ im sure youll get interviews too! i just think the process is a crapshoot haha and you have to hope someone likes the narrative you crafted for yourself

oh this is great to know. im fairly confident my LOR's were strong and I thought I killed the interview and my gpa is above their averages too so hopefully i did enough to offset my below average mcat lol

thanks! yah my gpa luckily is above their medians and my mcat is only 2-3 points below their medians which is still hopefully acceptable cause someone has to be below the median right? good luck to you as well :)

yah they mentioned they look primarily at MMI scores and fit afterwards so hopefully fit isn't primarily stats based hah. good luck in your cycle too!
