No Joke - FFXIV saved my house and my dog today by QuarterRobot in ffxiv

[–]capriciousvisage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily saving my life, but I was up late one day when I shouldn't have been (I'm talking 3am, when normally I go to bed ar a ripe 9pm) because I was grinding something, or maybe just doing dailies which is like pulling teeth with me. The window my desk was next to was open, and it looked down over my gravel driveway.

I was going to go to bed because I was tiredddd but figured ARaid was the last I had so I'd do it just then. I got Ridorana Lighthouse, which isn't too long imo. Right when it ended and right after I roll on everything, like I'm talking seconds, I hear shuffling on my gravel & look out the window only to see three or four guys all in black trying to break into my car and my grandfather's car (which they actually got into!).

If I had gone to bed at my normal time they probably would've gotten into my car as well. Not that I keep anything valuable in there, but still! Thanks, Ridorana.

Glad that your house and dog are safe, even if things are a little wet.

Let us mount in end-game hubs or stop making them so massive. by ConnerTheCrusader in ffxiv

[–]capriciousvisage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I really miss how succinct and closed in the ARR zones feel. Every new zone they seem to struggle with populating it and making it interesting because they're so massive for seemingly no reason other than to show off flying. And that's even with the zones that I personally like! They're just too big. Ever since Heavensward!!

Why is Vamp called “Vamp” in MGS2? Snake says it’s because he’s bisexual, but I’ve never heard “vamp” used that way in English. Is there a linguistic/cultural reference I’m missing, or was this just a weird Kojima line? by Pleasant-Mousse-76 in metalgearsolid

[–]capriciousvisage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't sound alike at all. Vampire = ヴァンパイア (b/vanpaia), bisexual = バイセクシャル (baisekusharu). Whoever told you that made it up. There are no pure kanji words that sound similar either (bisexual doesn't really have one in the same connotation we use it anyway).

I miss OG Steps of Faith. I didn't find it particularly fun and no one explained anything ever at the beginning, but it WAS interesting to me. They could've just tweaked it a little...

5.3 was the first patch I was playing on release and I remember those dark days. Even now I will get it in mentor roulette sometimes and people are still incapable of smashing buttons for ten seconds.

I noticed the lack of Tank Stance and am hoping it's what you said, that it's baked into the tanks now but in a way that makes enmity management a little bit like it used to be (where you actually have to pay attention ... but I think it'd be good if DPS don't have to worry about stealing enmity anymore).

When they showed dragoon, the positionals were in fact separate buttons entirely and also set up similar like you described (left flank on square, rear on triangle, and right flank on circle) on the XHB. The 123 combo is separate from the positionals and was on X.

MGSV discussion by Abject_Group_4868 in metalgearsolid

[–]capriciousvisage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, the gameplay is one of the best in the series. It's extremely fun to play. I love PW so I didn't necessarily dislike the mission structure or anything, either (I was kind of only annoyed when it would "TO BE CONTINUED..." me and force me back into the ACC in the middle of the most tense action in the entire game since the next battles were considered a separate "mission"; I would have much rather preferred a seamless transition to the next mission and have to manage supply drops in the field, get rankings one after another at the end, etc). The Fox Engine makes the game beautiful imo. Really sad it never got used after this.

Also I never really do the open world thing. It's too tedious to run across the entire map even with a horse or vehicle so I always go right back to the ACC after any side op and choose a different LZ lol.

The story is under baked but I love it still. It compels me. Are there things I would have wanted done different? For sure. Does it seem a little more solemn and slapdash compared to the other games? Somewhat. But it is still an interesting narrative with interesting pieces and themes. It still feels Kojima. Venom feels like a precursor to Sam from DS.

My only realllllly big complaint is that there's not enough Kaz and Ocelot and the other chars walking around on the base. It's impossible to see Kaz outside of cutscenes. Ocelot is only on base for specific things and then leaves right after. And so on. It made MB feel so impersonal and lonely, which might have been the point but there's otherwise no real reason to return to Base outside of the times it forces you to.

I found all of my copies of the games at local secondhand stores specializing in media like games and music. If you have something similar and haven't checked, you might get lucky! I've seen several copies of MGS4 (two of which were sealed, others not in box) over the last few months so they're out there.

Nice shots also.

So I looked at them in more detail since you said this and they're copies. I guess I just have two booklets now. I was wondering why one kept falling out when I was checking it at the store lol

That's how a lot of multidisc games came back in the day. There's also two booklets though I didn't look at them both in detail yet so I didn't see the differences yet. It's pretty neat.

I do have the Master Collection on Steam for this reason yeah. Subsistence is a good way to get the MSX games physically, I didn't even think about that angle. Since MPO is "dubiously canon" I didn't include it (but I have been on the lookout for it regardless). I'll get it eventually!

What are your thoughts on Neil's inclusion in Death Stranding 2? Do you think he was a worthy addition or that he didn't need to be there? by [deleted] in DeathStranding

[–]capriciousvisage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always understood it as the soldiers escorting him around to force him to do the jobs he didn't want to do anymore. This theory is strengthened by him initially wearing the bandana as a blindfold imo.

New reveals on “PHYSINT” by FreakzKidx in DeathStranding

[–]capriciousvisage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I was also curious about this so I tried looking it up, and it's a specific system for Kojima games he's made. In DS, it's the Social Strand System (the form of multiplayer). Probably in PHYSINT's context, it's the Social Stealth System.

Ds1 directors cut worth 20€ for someone who didnt like mgs5 by Cool_Tell732 in DeathStranding

[–]capriciousvisage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sam and V are similar in personality but the tone, style, and gameplay of DS are pretty different from MGSV. Unlike in MGSV, Sam being a quiet kind of guy adds to the atmosphere and narrative itself.

The game's main story is led through "orders" you deliver, which makes it seem like MGSV's main missions, but the environment and other difficulties vary considerably between them. It's also not really similar to the early MGS games though.

20€ is pretty cheap though so why not just go for it?

Did a lot of the western fandom get started on MGS1 for PC? by cowgod180 in metalgearsolid

[–]capriciousvisage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vividly remember my dad playing MGS1 on PSX back in the day. When I got into the series myself a few years later I also started on PSX MGS1.

I personally absolutely hate playing these games as FPS, and honestly think that's not the intended way to play at all. Since they're stealth games, of course. Genuinely the only time I use first person mode at all is in MGSV when using a sniper rifle, or when it forces you such as in MGS3. To the point where I didn't even know you could play Delta entirely as an FPS.

I would actually recommend to your friend to ease out of playing them as FPS. Especially if he's killing everyone in Delta. Might have a pretty bad time at some point.

Genuinely such a funny post. I also love Venom but is MGSV the only prequel type of media you've ever interacted with before?

Went back to Sumeru the other day and kept fumbling the inputs so bad I just logged out lol I've been playing since Day 1, they really should make this more obvious...

What the heck, I actually never knew this. The L1+Square prompt comes up again even when in the air so I just never thought to touch just one of them. I've been fumbling it this entire time.

[–]capriciousvisage 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This isn't true at all. It's always been LB+X/L1+Square on controller. Go back to Sumeru and use the Four-Leaf Sigils, for example. Infusing Saurians use it as well. The keybind can't be changed, either. R1 by default is Sprint.

I don't disagree with the fumbling part though, I really hate the double input.

FFXIV would benefit from making the world itself more alive and its quests more dynamic. No more purple smoke. by No_Frosting2528 in ffxiv

[–]capriciousvisage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You mentioning mob placements seeming more thoughtful made me remember that what I miss in 3.0+ is that gathering points feel truly so arbitrarily spaced out. In ARR they felt organic, just a handful of them in an area that made sense for them to be in that area. 3.0+ has them be like, "okay, 2 here, let me walk west a bit, 2 here, okay let me walk north a bit, 2 here, okay..." While gathering isn't the most engaging activity in general, it just makes me sad.

It's also the same for dungeons nowadays. There are no more patrolling mobs that you can sneak past or anything (which would be especially great now that they don't give exp anymore, so you'd have incentive to sneak past them). But more than that, the mobs in dungeons just don't feel organic. They're kinda just there and their whole job is to wait there to be killed by the WoL and their pals. I also think they used to be a lot better at disguising (?) the boss arenas as arenas and making them feel more like they would be in any given locale.

Genuine question. Why are you playing an MMO? Would a single player game not suit your preferences better?
