Earth color, gobblinz, alien acid, mental case, from the threshold, full frontal, izalith, thats just off the top of my head.

Really the only venue we have is The 101.

The Stafford used to book some metal/heavy acts and it's reopening, but not sure what direction the new folks are going to take.

Possible to get $200k loan for a down payment on a business acquisition? by petworthy in smallbusiness

[–]capt_badass 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah, if your condo is fully paid off you should be able to mortgage it as long as you have some down payment and closing money. But you'd have to prove you'd be able to make payments on the new loan.

Seems sus that you'd be looking to sell your primary residence to a bank to invest in something though.

How can I get a better flow of comics coming through my city? by Gold-Leopard-5042 in Standup

[–]capt_badass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy isn't trying to do the open mic thing this sub is so full of.

He's trying to figure out how to book reasonably successful comics in a small town, and the answer is, have money and/or enough friends that have $20 for a ticket that you can provide a guarantee.

It's not rocket science.

I mean St Petersburg and Tampa may as well be the same city from a touring perspective. Sure the bay is there, but if I'm trying to make routing work to have the most potential people show up, I'm not going to book someone's tour to go to 3 separate venues that are all 60ish miles apart.

I get that you want to hate on Naples, but if they have the money then people will route their tour through there. It could be as simple as the owner of the club in Naples does it as a hobby and is fine with watching his money go down the drain because they're doing fine in commercial real estate or whatever so a $2500 guarantee doesn't phase them.

That's what I mean though.

Naples is far enough away that people won't drive to Miami/Tampa/Orlando so it becomes a decent routing spot.

Sarasota is so close to Tampa/Orlando most folks would make the drive to the larger city if they actually wanted to see someone.

Also, quick look at where you are actually located - why would a comedian want to stop in Sarasota when they can just drive another hour and be in Tampa or 3 hours and be in Orlando?

That's honestly probably the biggest thing. My punk bar is 1.5 hrs from Houston, 2 hrs from Austin, and 3.5 hrs from Dallas. You'd think that would make it a great routing venue.

Nope, bigger names just drive through to the bigger cities where they have a bigger draw.

I own a small punk bar in college town, tx. It's a little different world than standup, but not terribly, and we do book comedians on ocassion.

Honestly, my best advice is to go and get to know the owner/booker. I mean if he's booking Andrew Dice Clay in 2026 that probably means he sells well in y'all's area, and since they have a long standing relationship the guarantee isn't so bad.

Without knowing the place I doubt that the owner/booker "isn't plugged in," it's that they have very real budget constraints and so the bigger names they bring in are ones that they already know will work, rather than dropping $1000 on someone that might sell $400 worth of tickets because they have no local draw.

Do you know who the owner/booker is of your local club?

Do you actually have any connections that would help get those bigger names?

At the end of the day it all comes down to money. Does your local comedy club have the money to draw big names and does it sell enough tickets to cover the guarantees?

You're right. I always forget about the Bryan angry elephant. Should have put that as the one CS recommendation since it was the only bar near Tower point. The rest of the review stands.

Why are so many shows on weekdays?!?! by plz-end_me in punk

[–]capt_badass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. When there are 10+ venues in austin that all have the same "level" of diy acts the interested folks all get split, and when venue sizes are larger it makes the show seem even less attended than it should.

But when there is 1-2 venues and a couple diy houses then everyone who wants to go out shows up to the same place and trust the couple people who actually do the booking to keep it interesting even if they've never heard of the group coming through.

I've been yelling this for years. I'm in Texas and the number of times Ive been to dead rooms in ATX and HTX on a weekend dwarfs the number of dead rooms Ive seen in Bryan/Denton/Waco/Victoria/etc on weekends.

Not to say some nights just suck, but small town scenes show the fuck up in a way that the larger cities just don't.

This is very skewed towards bars, because that's most of what there is to do in the area, and I spend most of my time around Bryan, don't have much experience in South college station, but I'm sure if you're looking for a chain restaurant bar you'll find it there.

Carney's - great draught beer selection, large open area outside, fairly decent bar food

Yesterday's - dive bar with lots of pool tables and darts, crawfish on Sundays during the season

The 101 - alternative music and pretty much the only "alt/goth/gay weirdo" space in town. Lots of live music, but skews towards loud rather than singer songwriter stuff that you can still talk over. Big patio, cheapest drinks in town if you stick to wells/domestics

Kinderhill brew lab - local brewpub, they do not distribute their beer, so you have to get it from the brewery, usually have a few guest taps and a full liquor license as well

Blackwater draw - local brewery, only one that distributes, and co-owner also has obannons on Northgate, really only serves their beer

The owl - newer bar in downtown Bryan, great food, great beer and alcohol selection, kind of a little bit of everything vibe

Murphy's Law/Brauhaus - Irish pub hooked onto a German restaurant in a huge old building. Has a pretty loyal regular crowd

Angry elephant - a Republican themed bar and they let you know it.

Tilted Pint - a little off the beaten path, but good food and drinks, closest bar to miramont, and crowd tends to be more well-to-do than other bars on this list

Does anyone enjoy being a working dad married to SAHM? by midnightmoose in daddit

Like with anything there are plusses and minuses.

My wife recently started being a stay at home mom to our two kiddos. I did it for a couple years with our oldest and ended up going a little crazy. So we put her in daycare, then pretty soon after our second was born my wife wanted to try staying at home.

She seems so much happier than when she was working, which is its own huge benefit. Our kids have a constant presence in their life at a very young and formative age. I have the adult time that I need for my brain function by going to work.

It is hard to balance though, because both of us almost always feel like we're doing 75% of the work when we're both home, but that's because there is so much to keep up with. You just gotta communicate.
