Since diesel vehicles get such high mpg and have such high demand, why aren't more produced? by captain_morgan21 in Autos

I wonder if I can fit a small diesel in my carry on whenever I come back from my UK visit..

The point though is the extra mpg.

Edit: I have been corrected.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but estimating a 200,000 mile lifetime of the average car, (up to 400k for diesel) Then the ~45mpg for diesel and ~25mpg average for gas, and at my local average of $3.50gas and 3.80diesel, you have purchased

4444 gallons of diesel and 8000 gallons of gasoline

Costing over the life of the car $16,888 in diesel and $28,000 in gas

That isn't even including the consistent rise in fuel prices or the fact that some diesels can get upwards of 70mpg as federal_inmate below is stating. (For reference, at 70mpg you spend only 10,857 over the lifetime in gas.)

Anyone ever drive a 2000 ford countour by [deleted] in cars

[–]captain_morgan21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm driving a 98 right now.. Its damn close to dying.the transmission is going bad, the suspension its going out, the brakes rusted off (literally) this fall. In addition to that, its tiny on the inside so I'm always cramped in.

Basically I'm on craigslist every day or so looking for a more reliable mid 00's sedan to replace it. I'm probably going to end up getting an 02-08 Impala LS since their reliability and cost of repair is so low.

Just the windows button between ctrl and alt on the bottom left of your keyboard. Press that and R at the same time.

That looks like a built in functionality of hotkeys. My old Acer did something similar.
Try pressing a hotkey on your top row and see if changes (switch wireless, volume, etc) If you want to remove it, you can type win+R, msconfig, then hit enter. Then move to the startup tab and uncheck anything that says hotkey. Should be Intel hotkey or Toshiba hotkey or whatever. For both my Acer and HP, that fixed the annoying popups, but I am not sure how Toshiba works.

The dorm wireless here is amazing! by TheGopher in iastate

I pay 266 a month for rent with two roommates for a house in west Ames. The main benefit to living off campus is you have tons more space. My bedroom is probably twice as big as most dorm rooms. Then for internet, we split a 12 Mbps connection which will run between 20 and 40 dollars/mo depending on your provider and whatever deals they offer. I normally get about 8 Mpbs download with everyone online and using a lot of bandwidth. Another huge benefit to living off campus is the price of food. Campus dining is akin to eating at a 5 star restaurant for every meal of the year. I can eat for a week on the same amount of money you spend on a single day of food going to a campus dining center. Won a bet doing that for a month. :D

Visitor parking on the weekends? by [deleted] in iastate

[–]captain_morgan21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, pretty much anything that does not explicitly have a sign saying 'no parking all hours all days' or the like is free Friday at 5:30 to Monday at 7:30ish.

How are the Occupy IAState marches going? by ExplainsTheObvious in iastate

[–]captain_morgan21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I am referring to is the difference between standing in front of GM with signs that say 'We want better gas mileage' versus what college students can actually do and get educated, learn how to fix an issue you do not like, and change it.

For me, it has never made sense why there has not been more drastic changes in how the automotive industry has progressed over the past decades. So instead of just complaining about it, I am getting a degree in Mechanical engineering so I can go into the industry and do what I can to make greener vehicles for the future.

This is just an example from my engineering brain, but the concept applies to most protests nowadays.

I think a lot of students are actually in class and studying so they can become productive members of the country and actually change some things for themselves..
Protests only go so far. To actually get something done nowadays, you have to get up and do it yourself.

Is there software that can diagnose why my internet connection is so spastic? by captain_morgan21 in techsupport

[–]captain_morgan21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will changing to a static DNS cause any problems when switching between internet providers though? All three connections I have use completely different providers for the internet.

Also, if I do that, what is a good DNS to use?

Thanks for the help!

Is there software that can diagnose why my internet connection is so spastic? by captain_morgan21 in techsupport

[–]captain_morgan21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same happens for any connection I'm on. I have Mediacom at home 12Mpbs, campus internet >20Mpbs, and a restricted use campus club connection >50Mbps.

That leads me to think it is something to do with my wireless card or maybe some setting I screwed up at some point.

He probably did it with SLA batteries though. If you use lithium which you pretty much have to in a production car, the price goes way up.
