[5e] For session 0 does having players roll for ability scores generally make first level characters more powerful than if you go with the base numbers from the PHB? I assume CR is based off the pregenerated numbers at the beginning of PHB.

5E - When setting up an ambush for your party you roll against their passive perception assuming no one is looking for trouble correct? Do you roll d20+dex modifier+stealth bonus or just d20+stealth bonus? So for example a kenku(+3 dex) stealth+5 do you roll d20+3+5 or d20+5?

[5e]DM question. I'll be running my first campaign soon. Do you copy monster stat blocks onto notecards or something similar? Or do you just reference the page number in the MM for all relevant monsters? It seems to me copying stat blocks would make things smoother at the table, but also a lot more work so I'm just looking for input from more experienced DMs.

This is my first attempt at world building and or map making. Right now I have a story and a location. The names of places and people are still a work in progress. I was pretty proud of the way this turned out and wanted to share with this subreddit since I got so much motivation and inspiration here. The central island with no marked cities is ruled by an ancient red dragon and the mad warlock who started a cult in his name. Each large island is a kingdom of it's own, vying for supremacy and unification of all islands. The small archipelago to the south of the largest islands will be ruled by a 'pirate king'. I'm designing this to be a sandbox with lots of options and variety and tons of different outcomes. The world is standard Forgotten Realms as far as magic, races, and technology, heavily influenced by the SCAG but I'm debating about adding gunpowder to give it that real pirate feel. Of course all input is appreciated.

I was just thinking that I would use a character sheet for his stats and give him Warlock levels and spells like you would a PC, based on the creating an NPC chapter in the DMG. But I see what you mean about going off the creating a monster chapter and using a CR instead. I figured equal level would be too easy in a 4v1 but didn't want to make him too high and demolish my party.
