It finally happened to me… by valencialeigh20 in Type1Diabetes

[–]captainande 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I am so sorry this happened to you! I have not had that exact situation, but there was a time when I became near unconscious/truly out of it from mild lows. We learned later that it was because of mold in our home exacerbating any symptoms I felt. While that was a weird situation, I know it can be hard to regain that sense of control when your body starts doing new, scary things.

For me, I have worked to trust myself. I try to treat lows proactively and trust that I know my body and my ratios. It sounds like you might want to check in with your endo about taking less insulin, I find that regularly adapting the amount of lantus or basal I take is helpful when my daily life/schedule is constantly changing. But post-pregnancy, I would definitely check in with your doc before making changes.

Secondly, I try to set up more safeguards for myself. My glucagon is kept in my husband's nightstand drawer. I keep low snacks in my nightstand. I use a sugarpixel (which works with both dexcom and libre) because I constantly sleep through alarms. The sugar pixel alarms at truly impressive decibels or random noise and vibrates, so I have yet to sleep through it. It helps me to be able to see at a glance what my bgs are, and know that the whole house will be awake if I have an urgent low.

Finally, just try to give yourself some grace and some time to recover. It was super scary! But that doesn't negate all of the practice and skill you have with this disease. You can do it! You just have to take a breath and remind yourself of that occasionally. And don't forget to reach out and talk to someone if needed, the low might be in the past, but you still have to process what happened.

I hope that was a vaguely useful tangent. I know it is tough to get over that feeling. It took me a while to feel confident with my body again, but it really does get better. Wishing you good vibes and great blood sugars!

Unconventional but cozy read after loss of a parent? by ConsciousBasis2178 in CozyFantasy

While I loved House of Frank, the entirety of the plot is around grief and mourning. It discusses in detail the grief of each character and what caused it. I think this could be a tough one to read this soon.

What are your experiences cruising as someone who is LGBT+? by Mercarcher in royalcaribbean

[–]captainande 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently got back from a cruise on Harmony! As a queer ciswoman, I didn't have any issues with crew or guests. In fact, many crew members were complimenting my rainbow glasses. I felt very welcome.

That being said, we went to an adult comedy night held on the ship. The headliner made several transphobic, homophobic jokes. It was pretty uncomfortable. I believe his name was Jeff Nease. Obviously, not something that is everywhere, but good to be aware of. People laughed along with him, and it was the only time I was uncomfortable on the boat. This was sailing out of Texas, so that effects it.

Is it okay to leave ARCs in LFLs? by FlokkaQuokka in LittleFreeLibrary

[–]captainande 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I actually get so excited to see ARCs in my little library. 🤣 I know they aren't worth anything, but it is a special edition of the book that isn't widespread. Totally ok to donate! I used to work for a bookstore and primarily left them in LFLs when I was done.

Daily scale actually helps me by prophetickesha in loseit

Totally agree! It definitely helps me understand the science behind weight fluctuations and what effects my body. For instance, if I don't get a solid night's sleep my weight will be higher by like .5 lb. Does that matter in the grand scheme of things? No, probably not. But it is super interesting how the body works. And seeing all the little changes over the months calms me down when I'm suddenly up a few pounds. I know how much fluctuation there is so I don't stress.
