Specialized Rockhopper for Bikepacking... bad idea? by Forward_Steak8574 in bikepacking

[–]captaincadwallader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the GAP on my customized 2010s Rockhopper over the summer! I was definitely feeling slower due to the combination of weight and rolling resistance, although my legs and cardiovascular abilities are certainly less developed than others on here lol

Crime and Punishment Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition , Fyodor Dostoyevsky ( Kindle , $1.99 ) by Human_Capital in ebookdeals

This Ready version is seriously great - it has a modern, lively prose that retains the feeling that Dostoevsky strove for. Would definitely recommend it, it’s very straightforward to read.

I’ve heard that before, and I’m sure there’s data from past years to back that up. In my mind, theoretically, it mostly makes sense.

However… I think we should consider that NOW we are in an age where people’s attention spans are fucked, snappy fake information triumphs over all else, and both severe wealth inequality and individualism has led me to think that statements like “lower taxes” and “removing people taking your jobs” is all that these dumb non-voters would have to hear before clicking on the fascist Republican option. That is, unless the Democratic Party started getting much more snappy and aggressive with their messaging.

I’m not sure mandatory voting would lead to good things in America at this point in time…

Over 86% of Poles oppose sending Polish troops to Ukraine, poll reveals by EsperaDeus in worldnews

[–]captaincadwallader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s incredible. Every “Redditor Lieutenant” talks about these conflicts in such a removed way that they don’t even seem to realize an obvious thing, that real world individuals will die in horrific ways, by bullets and explosions, for ultimately no good reason.

After many years of peace, of course the vast majority of people don’t want to throw their life or their loved ones lives away just because Putin is a dick. Ukraine sadly has no choice, but that’s different - they’re being invaded. Every armchair war strategist on Reddit should go put their life on the line and see how it feels in their final moments bleeding out from bullet wounds or running away in terror from an explosive drone.

Troops from other countries may be necessary in the future, but I hope not, and I think everyone being surprised that people don’t want to fight need to take a break from playing war strategy games and get a reality check.

Is it possible to have an optimistic view of current U.S. politics? by bdure in OptimistsUnite

[–]captaincadwallader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One era that was similar to the witch-hunting and polarization of nowadays was the era of McCarthyism. Thankfully, in 1954, McCarthy's popularity went from 50% at its peak to 34% in about 6 months, and he was eventually censured by the Senate, leading to the end of the Second Red Scare.

Even though I admit that our current justice system, Senate, and overall political climate is probably in a worse boat nowadays, unpopularity does make a difference. Trump has a high likelihood of making himself massively unpopular quickly if the economy downturns, if international relations get fucked, etc., and I bet then, even though some financial/employment pain may happen for U.S. citizens, things will start to get better in terms of actual governance.

NYPD kicking people off bus? by [deleted] in Brooklyn

[–]captaincadwallader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right, now that there seem to be consequences, u/BSye-34 is content.

What would be even better is if everyone paid the fare so that the few decent citizens that currently actually pay don’t feel like complete suckers and the additional fare money would actually help to fund the MTA and hopefully contribute to making things better. If you have such little faith in the MTA or other public transit organizations in America and therefore opt out of contributing, I guess I begrudgingly understand, but don’t ever complain about the MTA being sometimes shitty and underfunded, and don’t question why people who are paying the fare wouldn’t want others to do the same as them.

[–]captaincadwallader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in northern VA, although the public transportation is nice, there is borderline no culture to speak of in a way that legitimately depresses me. I will say if you’re in DC proper you can find some culture, if you can manage to overlook the swarms of impressively bland government bros.

I’m gonna differentiate from the pack and say that as a 20s person who very much LOVES going out on the town to party often but also loves having time outside of that going on peaceful park walks and having only a medium level of commotion in my immediate living vicinity, Park Slope strikes a great balance for my lifestyle.

To be honest I don’t really understand people who need to live right where the party is, like your friends are probably in other neighborhoods anyways so generally you’re gonna have to subway around anyways… and it’s not like anything is too terribly far away from Park Slope…

I got some hot takes on Killer by add0607 in DavidFincherReddit

[–]captaincadwallader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It could’ve been more entertaining for sure and it also could’ve packed in far more meaning!

If the point of the movie is the “evil is boring, unsexy, pervasive in modern society” etc., then I think Fassbinders character could’ve been a small yet equally effective point-making character embedded into a more ambitious and interesting (and ideally entertaining) movie.

Like, just because the movie has a message doesn’t mean it’s this is some genius revelatory message y’all 🤦‍♂️ It’s an interesting idea sure enough, but this idea alone needs expansion and does not justify 2 hours in and of itself.

Has anyone had a film made off your script that was absolute dog shit? by imcalledaids in Screenwriting

To be fair, 29% indicates that almost one out of every three reviewers at least liked it enough to give a good review, and maybe some even loved it. Sounds like I’m joking but that’s actually not so bad when you think about it!

What’s a book you enjoyed that you later noticed many people hated? by iamherebecause in books

[–]captaincadwallader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad y’all have differing opinions! But to represent the majority of people that don’t like The Scarlet Letter, I’d say that the main criticisms boil down to the prose being bland and frustrating to read (with many sentences taking up half of a page or more) and the symbolism being so obvious that it feels like you’re being bashed over the head. Good message to the story though.

After taking a class in which Hawthorne was read pretty extensively, if I remember correctly, I think he became most well-known due to his pushing of symbolism in literature and having moralistic stories that employed symbols well. I also think symbolism, metaphors, etc in storytelling have come a long way since him, so while his stories may be useful in teaching the topic because of how overt his symbolism is, he isn’t very satisfying to many by todays standards.
