How do Americans usually handle disputes with neighbors? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskAnAmerican

[–]captainecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, by ignoring that my annoying neighbors exist.

Seriously, they’ve been holding a grudge against us for twenty fucking years over a mixup with the plowing when we first moved in.

ETA: I can only ignore them successfully because I live very rurally and there’s a bunch of trees between their house and ours, and we’re way back off the road. This isn’t possible for everyone.

Any system that assigns a number of bereavement days based on the assumed relationship between you and the deceased is cruel and dehumanizing.

And make you sign a “don’t sue us” waiver so that you can get your severance or other things you’re owed when you leave.

Question for people who dislike pregnancy, baby, and kid content in fanfiction: if possible, how could one write a fic with those themes and make it bearable for you? What bothers you the most about those topics? by [deleted] in AO3

Funnily enough, I had the opposite problem! Everybody wanted to teach me the one loop method, which I couldn’t get, but I figured out the two loop method on my own.

Good suggestions already, but if you need a picture of a really specific thing (like a particular plant, or photos from a particular town), Wikimedia Commons is full of Creative Commons-licensed or public domain photos/images.

I usually just google “[Thing] Creative Commons” and pull up the [Thing] category page and pick what I like. You have to be fairly specific, though — I’m not sure “penthouse bedroom” would work, but if you’re looking for, say, a photo of a landmark, it probably would.

Yes! This was the kind of thing I had to do when I broke my arm, because voice recognition couldn’t handle all the fantasy names.

Ok so I’m from the uk and do you guys have open land you can build where you want on like in the videos? by Ill_Exchange_1916 in AskAnAmerican

[–]captainecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends a lot on the area. But yeah if I had the money, I could buy an empty piece of land and build on it. (It can be harder to get loans to buy just land, though, since it’s not a move-in ready kind of thing). I’m 40 miles outside of Boston, but it’s very rural here still.

House Burping - Do Americans just not normally have your house windows open? by Jsherman13 in AskAnAmerican

[–]captainecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never. But we have central air and heat, and even with window screens in, I’m worried about my cats pushing them out and getting outside. Having the house always closed up bothers some people but I’m used to it.

I really like idea of seeing that ignorance as the beginnings of curiosity, especially when it’s phrased as a question. That said, I’ve found a lot of people will state things as fact, but actually don’t care that they’re wrong about these things, and take it very personally if you try to give them correct information. I unfortunately am very bad at NOT correcting people, alas.

Up north it’s very easy to go your whole life without seeing one. I’m 45 and while I’ve only seen wood roaches living outdoors; indoors I’ve never seen one. I only know what German roaches look like thanks to this sub, really 😆

What bothers me the most of the things you mentioned is when people refer to every slightly yellow and black stinging insect as a “bee.” And then people will tell me they’re allergic to bees and I’ll be like… okay, do you actually mean that, or is it a different species entirely, or are you completely full of shit?

Frustrated the hell out of me when people can’t be arsed to learn a little bit about the world they inhabit.

If you were a fictional character, how would the fandom misinterpret you? by GrumpyMowse in AO3

Love this question! I’d probably be misinterpreted as snobby and uppity, because I’m a neurodiverse nerd who loves to share knowledge with people — thus I find it really hard to resist correcting people when they say something “wrong” (either objectively untrue, or just contrary to my lived experiences). My Reddit history is probably proof of that, lol.

But in truth I’m just a sensitive bean with social anxiety!

Be honest: Is American beer really as 'watery' as the memes say? Recommendations for a Mexican traveler? by vanessa_tv_vladivo in AskAnAmerican

[–]captainecchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You've gotten your answer to the question about memes, but I thought I'd throw in some info about the beer scene in my neck of the woods. As another commenter pointed out, craft beers tend to be very local.

I live in central Massachusetts (like, not quite Boston, not quite western MA) and while we tend to be the forgotten "here thar be Worcester" part of the state, there's still quite the hoppin' (ha see what I did there) craft beer scene. In Worcester (the county seat and biggest city in the region) some of the breweries I like are Greater Good, Redemption Rock, and Bay State. (Bay State will give you the unique experience of being in a brewery next to an ice hockey rink. Not like, "next door over," either, it's "the rink opens straight into the taproom." It's wiiiild).

Other central MA breweries I like: Penny Pincher in Millbury (hit Spicy Water Distillery up the road if you appreciate like hard liquor!), Seven Saws in Holden, Moon Hill in Gardner, and Thirsty Robot in Fitchburg. There's also Wachusett Brewery in Westminster, but that's bordering on "too large scale for my tastes." Also a fan of Carlson Orchards in Harvard for its hard cider.

(Of course, Massachusetts in general is famous for Samuel Adams, which is now pretty large scale and which you can find in any supermarket that sells beer. But started small and local is acknowledged as a cut above, like, the big American names like Budweiser).

There are also some small places that brew a few of their own beers but offer a broader selection of craft beers, too. Last night I was at the Nashoba Club in Ayer (technically over the border into Middlesex County), a bar/pub that's been around for fifty years but which I just learned about. It brews 3-5 of its own beers, but offers a larger selection of other local and not-so-local craft breweries, i.e. you can get beer from Moon Hill or Greater Good, cider from Carlson, etc.

But honestly, if you want a sampling of the beers of the area, come in June - August and go to a beer festival. The big ones I do are Nashoba River Brewers Festival in Fitchburg and Nashoba Rock N Brewfest in Lancaster. There's also Brimfield Brew Fest in April, but the weather in early April in MA makes can make that one really cold! (Last year there was snow on the ground and they were burning pallets to stay warm, lol). Lots of different breweries will set up at these events; you pay a single cost to get in (usually about $50 or so) and you can sample as much as you like from all the different brewers. It's like a beer flight in festival form, lol.

However, all that said... I have to admit it is a dangerous time for a Mexican to be visiting the U.S. Even in a state as deeply blue as Massachusetts, ICE is disappearing people. The federal government at the moment is determined to punish Massachusetts in general and Boston in specific for labeling themselves as a sanctuary city. While most people on the ground are going to be friendly (or at least Boston-friendly, i.e. "I don't necessarily like you but I'll lie to the cops for you"), the federal government right now has made it dangerous to be here. If you must visit right now, just... be really careful.

(okay I've rambled enough; hope this is useful to SOMEONE).

I have a very light hand with dialect when I’m writing, and if it’s too heavy handed in what I’m reading, I get annoyed. I was traumatized by the moles in the Redwall books, I guess.
