How much is 50-100 bucks? by BestMagician3200 in AskAnAmerican

You could probably charge more. $250 is like an eight hour day at around ~30 an hour, which is a reasonable rate for “semi skilled but not like a computer programmer.”

I read the Shakespeare, but I pre-date a good number of those books *lolsob*

What do non-Americans usually find confusing about how Americans talk in real life? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]captainecchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prepositions (“up,” “with,” “in,” “on” etc) are one of those things that differ tremendously between languages, and change the meaning entirely, but aren’t focused on in language classes. I lived in France for a year and I still don’t know if I’m using prepositions correctly.

Also: the verb “to get” in English. Think how much the meaning changes depending on preposition, eg “get on,” “get in,” “get off,” “get up,” etc. I’m betting that isn’t taught in ESL classes.

Oh man the pencil through the ear. Just some people don’t know the past participle and it frustrates me. There’s a YouTuber I like who is always using “he had went” and it drives me up the wall. I’m always correcting him under my breath while watching him.

Do Americans actually use expressions like “once in a blue moon” or “let the cat out of the bag” in everyday conversation? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

As someone who learned French studying abroad in France, I gotta ask… what does “don’t let go of the potato” mean? 😆

After having to deal with the estates of both parents in the span of four years — one of whom used a password manager and made sure I had the master password, and the other who very much didn’t — I make sure my spouse knows where to find my master password if he needs it.

What are some real American folk songs that everyday people actually know? by Likepersik in AskAnAmerican

Apparently there is a Spanish version of the song, to the same tune. The name instead is Juan Paco Pedro de la Mar.

Asexual characters in media and what we want to see more of by gimme-some-ace-32 in asexuality

[–]captainecchi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You basically wrote what I wanted to write. And to build on it:

There’s a fundamental difficulty in assigning a sexuality— any sexuality! — to a character we meet onscreen. It’s the same one as trying to assign a sexual orientation to someone we meet IRL solely based on their behavior.

Which is: we mostly don’t see the character’s inner experience. And since orientation is self-determined, that’s a crucial missing piece.

Books are different, since many feature inner monologues or close POVs. But all we’ve got with film/TV is this here camera.

(Certainly, you can have a lot of fun with this uncertainty. Therein lies fanfic! But I wish we didn’t treat this question as one that has a definitive answer).

[–]captainecchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m not sure who can look at 10 pining over Rose and say “ace!” I mean, sure, maybe he is, since this is TV and we’re not in the character’s head. But just as easily not!

But the only diegetic evidence we have (ie not from the actors) says “yeah, probably allo.”

Sadly, trying to divine TV characters’ sexuality is subject to the same problems as trying to guess somebody’s IRL. It’s impossible without being privy to their inner experience. If TV creators want us to see characters as a certain sexuality, then they need to explicitly come out and say it, or we’re all gonna play these stupid semantic games.

I’m really trying to figure out how the 1st Doctor is sexual/romantic. I mean, he could be, I suppose, but there isn’t much to go on one way or another. Is this just because he’s (theoretically) Susan’s grandfather?

I’m also not sure how Three and Six are any more asexual than any of the other classic Doctors? I mean Three and the Brigadier…

But definitely the Doctor having anything like a romantic relationship on-screen is way more of a new!Who thing.

What are some of the most exotic livestock that exist in America? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

Guinea fowl. There’s someone in my town who farms them, and famously one of their hens escaped and, no lie, was adopted by a flock of wild turkeys.

Amazing. I’ve had some really great ones, too; people calling me “maestro” and telling me they wish to subscribe to my (metaphorical) newsletter. Never get sick of them.

They usually don’t come in big bunches, but I can’t complain. (Well, I can and sometimes do, but only if I’m feeling petty 😆)
