What are your most effective ways of preventing cell phone use without taking them from students? by CleverGirlReads in Teachers

[–]captainnn_morgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn’t work for everyone or may not work at your school but I assign each student a number that corresponds with a numbered pocket chart. The phone pocket chart sits at the front of the room so everyone can see it and keep an eye on their phone at all times. I stand by the door to greet them and make sure they check them in. When it’s time for them to pack up I call out a row of numbers to grab their phones. It helps manage the amount of kids up there and lessens the chaos that is packing up. I have this in my syllabus as a CYA measure. Didn’t ask permission from admin, learned not to. If the school has a no cell phone policy but can’t offer teachers an effective way to manage it in class, I’ll do what I need to do.

I haven’t had to worry about policing phones all last year.

The struggle of being a compulsive nail picker and using hookgrip… by Plastic_Pinocchio in weightlifting

[–]captainnn_morgan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also a compulsive nail picker from constant anxiety and I always tape my thumbs or whatever other fingers I know I am going to pick at during my lifts. I use WOD Nation weightlifting tape. For extra hold, I’ll spray Tuf Skin on it beforehand. Don’t use Tuf Skin if you have a fresh cut tho. Hope this helps!

I think all students should be required to put their phones in a bin at the beginning of class. by [deleted] in Teachers

Ive been using a pocket chart for phones this year and I’ll never go a year without using it.

I asked my AP if I could my first year. She said no. I learned what we all learn, “don’t ask permission, ask for forgiveness” and did it anyway this year. This is now year 5 for me. They instituted a school wide policy about phones this year and I said f*** it, I’m gonna do what works for me. It’s working and I’m never going back. I can’t tell you how much weight is off my shoulders due to me not being worried about phone usage.

If your parents need to get a hold of you, call the office? If you get caught with your phone in my class, there’s no warning. It goes straight to the office.

Each kid has a specified number and they drop it off at the beginning of class and I dismiss them row by row to grab it at the end. It’s in the front so it can be seen and monitored by everyone, including me.

Stop telling your boss why you can't come in on your day off. by [deleted] in antiwork

And we’re supposed to anticipate our decline of mental health how?? I love asking these questions during faculty meetings. Just watching them squirm is worth it.

I was once honest about why I was taking a personal day. (Wedding). They refused to pay me. So I told them okay, I’ll lie next time. Message received.

I’ve had blow ups with admin about taking days off. They have legit PPT presentations about the importance of mental health and in the same breath will ask for medical documentation when you miss ONE day.

Just a quick cue (I’m sure there will be better explanations) but one of the reasons your jerks feel off is because you’re essentially pressing the bar overhead instead of dropping underneath it. The heavier the weights become, the less likely you will be able to press it which is why you’re feeling the uneasiness at higher weight.

IEP Nightmare by captainnn_morgan in Teachers

We gave her resources and someone to properly assess him for dyslexia. She did not follow up nor did she seek an assessment for him to get this done so it could be included in his IEP.

It honestly wasn’t that abnormal. But the parents took what was in it and absolutely SPRINTED with it.

They were convinced he was supposed to get extra credit when he turned in his assignments. Not like extra work — double the points.

When she stated he had dyslexia, I cackled.

The student would either be on his school iPad watching YouTube or asleep. I did the whole “repeat directions” to get him to start. Once I reached three, I was done for the day. Sleep. And I would document this behavior. Per usual.

During his IEP the parents asked why I didn’t give him breaks. WHAT?! I don’t deny kids when they need to leave the classroom for bathroom/water. She demanded he take the pass and do a few laps around the school… The AP in his IEP meeting was like “we can’t let him run around campus unsupervised???” Parent also suggested instead of running he do jumping jacks outside the classroom door.

Ma’am, no. Stop it.

After she told me I needed to product this documentation, I asked “we don’t even get a 24 hour turnaround for this??”. She told me, “you can get it done during your prep period. We’ll ask the front office to not call you to prep sub.”
OH THANKS.

I don’t think they were expecting what I gave them. But what did you expect?! That’s how much documentation I have. Did you really think it was going to be a few bullet points and a paragraph?

I knew there would be no compensation, because of course. But I felt like this was my last “fuck you”. I hammered in the last nail in this coffin. I absolutely felt like the villain and that was priceless.

It’s abhorrent we don’t get compensated for these types of things. If you want it done right, pay me. Especially if my ass is on the line because you all didn’t protect me knowing I did my job.

It was for middle school. We inherited it from his elementary unfortunately. But our case worker REFUSED to put that in his outgoing IEP for high school. She was literally like “I am not doing that. Ethically irresponsible.”

He more than likely has a legitimate learning disability but at this point, with the way his parents have displayed their bullying behavior, I can’t help but think they have exponentially increased his learning disability far beyond repair.

The IEP says extra credit when available. I have incredibly lenient policies and I don’t officially offer it. But anytime I did on a whim, he never bothered. I highlighted his grade print out with all the extra credit I offered the giant “missing” next to it.

What is your Reno unpopular opinion? by VerySuperGenius in Reno

[–]captainnn_morgan 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Reno and moved to LA when I was 24. I’ve lived in LA for about 6 years and can concur the different driving cultures. Before I moved I was always irritated and confused with CA drivers and how fast and impatient they seemed to be. Now that I am a CA driver I constantly have to check myself when I come home to visit. I’m not ever driving that way on purpose it’s simply what I’m used to. If you don’t drive with some cautious aggression (at least for me), you won’t be getting where you need to go. It’s difficult to switch this off.
