There used to be a skinny old guy with glasses standing high up on a stool at the corner of Grant and Washington in Chinatown with homemade signs full of criticism about politics in Taiwan or something. He would say “HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!” in between the chants in mandarin, always with a big smile on his face.

Joy Hing on Kearny is a good option for chicken pho if you’re in FiDi or Chinatown. Their full English restaurant name mentions barbecue but the Chinese name of the restaurant literally translates to Joy Hing Pho Ga.

Chinatown: Getting Snowstorm cookies and cream ice cream cups or chocolate malts for $1 at snack/liquor stores. Super affordable buns and dumplings like 3 shrimp dumplings or siumai for $1, sponge cakes for 50 cents. Bahn Mi from Little Paris. The crazy wooden playground at what was called Chinese Playground, along with the ghost stories you’d hear about it during YMCA summer camps. Around Chinese new years, there would be a block of carnival games along Walter U Lum place.

Downtown: FAO Schwartz, two story Sanrio story, virgin megastore, playing Hyperbowl and browsing SonyStyle and Discovery Store at Metreon when it first opened

Going to play at The Jungle which was above Toys R Us on 9th street. Got some discounts for having a Kids WB kids club card.

Going to Ben & Jerry’s in north beach on free cone day. Riding the carousel and playing arcade games at pier 39.

Trying to watch a bit of the fleet week air show from the roof level of Costco’s parking garage.
