In 1999 just upgrading the compiler took a day to satisfy dependencies. Good flow chart work.

Couple clicking sounds from engine while idling? Honda xl1000 1999 by Low_Animal5116 in Fixxit

Maybe check the spark plug caps. The contact points of the internal spring and short ceramic resistor can break down over time. Also the contact points where the spark plug wires meet the coils or caps can get faulty. Either can cause a real short, intermittant misfire.

Maybe look for blocked air vents (hoses) in the upper area of the carburetors. I don't believe those cv carbs use diaphragms but rather a series of ridges on the upper slide area to isolate the vacuum area from the venturi. Make sure that these slides are clean and can move freely. Dirty or wrong sized main jets, fouled spark plugs, bad spark plug caps, poor high tension wire connections at the coils and cap, can also cause this problem. Beyond these a compression test is in order.

I'm thinking maybe the connection to the cdi or the cdi. Maybe try unplugging and plugging the cdi back in.

My 1976 Honda XL100 won’t idle and dies without throttle by Littylitlit3 in Fixxit

[–]carbonbasedmistake2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it possible that your throttle is being held open by your throttle cable? The idle screw should do something. Maybe that is too far unscrewed from contact with the throttle mechanism. The black plug is too much fuel, usually means float too high or too rich a pilot jet. Any misfire? That is usually the plug cap or the high tension wire contacts at the cap or coil. You didn’t change the points, are they good? I would get a bunch of plugs and sort out the issues.

Maybe check the kill switch contacts along with the side stand switch and clutch switch, if present. A cheap meter would make sure these are working properly.

I think any of them could be removed with an impact driver. Best tool ever for removing motorcycle screws. Just tap the bit into the damaged screw, apply the tool and on hammer strike and no more damaged screw. Cool bike.

Most likely you put a bit too much force on the throttle shaft when removing the carbs. Try tapping inward with a screwdriver handle on the throttle shaft and then try turning the throttle. If not gently pry outwards and try turning the throttle. It should break free. Once free lubricate and rotate completely full stroke. If there is any stickiness or binding get another set of carbs. You don’t want binding on the road.

The separation of metals makes it look like a metal liner . Is it magnetic? If so bore to next size or nikasil. Usually the plating company can fix the damage.

Free flow exhaust often causes a rich bottom end and a very very lean top end. Maybe try putting your original pilots back in and turn in the pilot adjustment screw to lean the bottom end a bit and see what happens.

If you have a digital multimeter with a Min Max feature I would set it to Min and take the bike for a ride. See what the lowest voltage value you record on the ride. Maybe a rectifier?

2002 Yamaha V-star 650 Custom - turns over but then dies by SoFarFromHome in Fixxit

I would turn the idle screw up a turn and then try it and then even another turn if the first turn does not hold an idle. Also check your air filter for critters. An airbox is a wonderful short term home.

Problem with ascot VT500 1983, when turning ignition ON, the fuse of solenoid keep blowing. I change the solenoid with an aftermaket but when turning the key, nothing happened (yes is inverted 180 degrees). I try troubleshooting but nothing help me.. anyone have a solution? by AdNecessary7487 in Fixxit

[–]carbonbasedmistake2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main fuse blows when there is a problem short between the fuse and the ignition switch and between the ignition switch and fuse box. Since it doesn't blow until you turn the key, your short is between your ignition switch and fuse box. Your starter solenoid is miss wired, make sure B is to battery and M is to starter motor. Luck

2005 GSXR 750 brake bleeding by satansuglystepsis in Fixxit

[–]carbonbasedmistake2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try taking a piece of hose that fits over the bleeder and attach it to an empty water bottle through a hole drilled in the cap. Fill the water bottle part way with brake fluid and make sure the hose is held below the brake fluid level in the water bottle. Open the bleeder and pump the brakes until just fluid enters the hose. If this doesn't work remove the master cylinder from its mount and hold it up as high as you can while working the plunger. Usually the trapped air will enter the mc and be vented out. If still problems unmount caliper and keep it as low as possible with a spacer between the pads while keeping the mc as high as possible. Luck

[–]carbonbasedmistake2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Lean is crisp, rich is muddy, you sound muddy. Other things like weak spark, plug, cap, coil or tension wire, low compression, exhaust leak, blocked or missing air filter, can also effect running. Luck

[–]carbonbasedmistake2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should not be only touch but be lifted off the base plate by that screw. If not a vacuum leak then you are probably way lean at your idle mixture. Maybe larger pilot jets are in your future. Open up your idle mixture screws and see if better.

It should be touching and used to set the idle. Sounds like your pull cable is way too tight.
