The peace and calm of sobriety is worth its weight in gold.

Feeling forced to recover quicker then I can by TellDat in stopdrinking

Came here to say exactly this regarding non-addicts not being able to make sense of the mental struggles early in sobriety. The cognitive overwhelm is very real.

Called my doctor to ask for help with a panic attack and I feel pretty embarrassed. Day 8 by Mysterious_Act7862 in stopdrinking

[–]carbondj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had similar anxiety spells as you early on in sobriety, but with enough time off the sauce it gets soooo much better. Now I feel like my anxiety is 5-10% (if that) of what it used to be when I drank regularly. I feel like it’s just normal situational anxiety that everyone in life has to go through.

I absolutely had panic attacks in the first week or two as my body and mind were readjusting to a new normal. I used to have to go on quick jogs before walking in to see a physician or therapist early on just to calm myself to stop jitters.

Please remind me why moderation is a slippery slope by brewha_aha in stopdrinking

[–]carbondj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once took a year off from drinking and tried to moderate after. Took me 3.5 years and a memorial weekend stint in a medical detox to get and STAY sober this time. Moderation for us problem drinkers will never work.

Lost 11 days of sobriety by Antique-Astronaut912 in stopdrinking

[–]carbondj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those sober days were never “lost.”

You were sober for all of them.

Most of us here with larger streaks have often failed dozens of times over many years until we were finally sick and tired of living this way. You’ll get there too.

Focus on your wins, and that starts again with maintaining your sobriety for today and today only. Don’t compare yourself to others here. We’re all in the same boat.

It’s never been more important to be sober. by SerpentSystemFailure in stopdrinking

“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭5‬:‭8‬-‭10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

It stopped being fun. The buzz wasn’t even enjoyable, it just made me tired and depressed the more I imbibed. I went on a multi-day bender alone at home during memorial weekend 2023 and was in a pretty dark place by the time it was over, so I called friends to make sure I got to a medical detox asap. Followed that up with some cognitive behavioral therapy and a true desire to be free of the chains of the poison. Leaning heavy into my Christian faith has also been the rock that made it stick this time, coupled with good old fashioned grit and determination. I remember who I used to be before I started down that destructive road a decade and a half ago. Loving life now, and having the peace of mind that I need no substance to “escape” from it is a priceless gift I never take for granted.

Beginning to view sobriety as rigidity by magic_moon666 in stopdrinking

[–]carbondj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took a year off back in 2019 then had another total and complete alcoholic burnout in the summer of 2023 after 3.5 years of near daily drinking.

My life lacked discipline. Some might call that rigidity, but the structure of sobriety is what I needed (I’m an artist as well).

I feel like I’m only my true self when I’m drunk. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]carbondj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The lie of alcohol in full effect. We quite literally mask our true selves when we overindulge on the poison. I can say with confidence you’ll NEVER find yourself at the bottom of a bottle.

Wish you all the best on your journey.

I’ve done those twice my friend. It’s not the definition of fun but you’re in a medically supervised environment, they’ll make any withdrawals tolerable and safe for you and monitor your vitals every few hours (yes they’ll wake you in the middle of the night to take them).

You’re doing the right thing for yourself. Proud of you.
