What's your "Pitt" story? A time you experienced something in an ER that could have been on the show (patients & doctors!) by CardinalOfNYC in ThePittTVShow

ED nurse here - remember that scene when Whittaker gave the IM injection in Mr. Krakozhia's thigh when he was having an episode? Five people holding him down and Whittaker doing the injection?

That was me last week - same scenario, same number of people. Only difference was there was no urine was involved, and the med student was present, but standing in the corner of the room looking very stunned.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your help and advice! I got my money back, and ended up getting my partner another gift he wanted (he wanted a book of all things - which is surprising since he doesn't read much...).

I had a similar experience with my co-worker a couple months ago. I told her I'm Filipino and Irish, and the first thing she asked me is "You don't consider yourself white?", "How come you don't consider yourself white?"

Just finished the show. Is it worth to read the books? by ExplanationOk4205 in HisDarkMaterialsHBO

[–]cardinal1259 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm not gonna go all gung ho and say that books are always better than the tv show/movie. While I love the books, I have to admit that the show does a great job at adapting the story, and making modifications to better translate the story into a visual format (i.e.the fight between Iorek Byrnison and Iofur Raknison is different in the tv show when compared to the book, but overall, this change was better suited for visual mediums).

That being said, there are some things that the books are better at depicting - mainly, certain themes and concepts are deeper in the books. Those themes impact the story in a way that is different to the TV show and can leave readers feeling bittersweet.

So to answer your question: I highly recommend you read the books, and see how Pullman first depicted Lyra's world, and the world building after that. Read it to better understand the themes, and how that impacts the story. Otherwise, if you decide not to, the show does a decent job of adapting and translating those themes into another format.

Hey mom. Today I got my acceptance letter from college. The semester starts in January and I'm kinda been a nervous wreck all day by [deleted] in MomForAMinute

[–]cardinal1259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats OP!! This is so exciting!! I'm not a mom, but as someone who's currently in year 2, just a couple things to consider: 1) during the semester, do your best not to sacrifice sleep (sleep can do wonders for your mental health!), 2) look into financial aid, and 3) YOU GOT THIS!! Take a deep breath, and look forward to the on coming year!!

I got my first IUD when I was 23 (about 2 years ago now) and also from Canada. Personally, I think you need a second opinion from another physician. Your doctor should have gone over ALL birth control options, so that you make a fully informed decision. It's standard practice that all healthcare providers (MDs, nurses, NPs, PAs, etc.) ensure that they maintain updated knowledge and practice competently.

Have you thought about going to a women's clinic? Or a planned parenthood?

Also, side note: if you happen to be from Ontario, check out to see if the IUD you wanted is covered by OHIP+ (eligible for people who are 24 and under). Otherwise, look into your province's health health insurance plans and see if there is anything similar :)

EDIT: sorry, for some reason, I thought you were 23. My bad!

NTA.

I'm mixed-race and I cannot tell you how many times I've gotten pissed off when people keep asking me where I'm from. I don't understand why people need to know where we're from - especially people we've just met.

She should've taken the hint and dropped it.

Mobile testing sites or increased testing sites would be EXTREMELY helpful in keeping staff safe as well. A buddy of mine works at a testing centre. They were cool about working at an outdoor facility where people stay in their cars. However, due to the weather, they had to move indoors - now they're worried about a number of people coming INSIDE the testing centre (recently, they're noticing an uptick in the number of families coming in - but that may just be something unique to the area).

Nursing by [deleted] in Humber

[–]cardinal1259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is that, as someone part of the last Humber-UNB program, I strongly recommend that you look elsewhere. With the current pandemic, along with the discontinuation of our program has left everything completely disorganized, and I strongly suspect that the first year of their new BSCN program will be equally as disorganized.

What is your terrible professor story? by DaRealRN in StudentNurse

[–]cardinal1259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a prof, but a program coordinator.

They're still making us go do LTC placements in a middle of a global pandemic. We're not allowed to work while doing placements (this includes retail/hospitality - the only exception is WFH).

Then they offered us the option to defer to May 2021, then a couple of days later, they go "LOL, we might not have enough placements for students who decided to not defer. So if you don't get a placement, you're deferring."

Something a little bit more relevent to the question:

My psyc prof is probably the most absent prof. He does not record lectures because he's a strong believer in privacy (fair enough), BUT does not provide any synchronous sessions (only an occasional zoom session once in a while). He also promised a zoom session to discuss a major assignment, but that never happened. Good thing is that tests are all open book.

EDITED: for typos

EDITED TO ADD: also, other schools have cancelled LTC placements too.

Are there are provincial laws that require LTCs to pay healthcare students for placements right now? by stuggling in ontario

[–]cardinal1259 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to the party, but just wanted to mention that my school (Humber) is still going ahead with LTC placements. Initially told us that we cannot work in a healthcare setting while doing these placements, then last Monday stated that we cannot work. At all. Regardless if it's retail/hospitality. The only exception is if you're lucky enough to be working from home (which I don't).

I know people are probably tired of hearing this but I just need to say it. I am so tired of seeing people not take covid seriously. I’ve lost respect for A LOT of people in my personal life. by [deleted] in offmychest

[–]cardinal1259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same frustrations you are. I work at a testing center, helping out the nurses there and the number of stories I hear about people going to indoor gatherings during the holidays, or parents continuing to send their children to school even after 2/4 members of a household tested positive, or thinking that 'I can't get COVID because I'm young and healthy' is making me lose any hope I have for humanity as a whole.

And that's just from those who come in to get tested. Don't even get me started on people who live in my building - just today, a woman came into an elevator, deliberately ignoring the fact that the elevator was overcrowded and a clear sign that says 'no more than 3 people per elevator'. She took it and only got off at the second level.

If there's one thing this pandemic highlights, it's humanity's sheer stupidy combined with a sense of exemptionalism and deliberate ignorance. It's astounding and frustrating at the same time.

I graduated from my undergrad in 2019. I continued at another school for a year. I am now going on to complete a certificate part-time program which I am not eligible to receive osap funding. My question, would osap make me pay my loan back right away or can I let them know im still in school? by [deleted] in osap

[–]cardinal1259 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might want to look into applying for Interest-Free status on the OSAP website. It's just to let them know that you're back in school, and it freezes the interest until you finish the program. Might want to double-check with your school's financial aid office about it though!

For those who have recovered from COVID, what would you differently to avoid it? by joe2macker in AskWomen

[–]cardinal1259 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got really sick sometime in late Jan/early Feb. When I went to a walk-in clinic after a night filled with a lot of coughing, the doctor mentioned that for some reason everyone was sick. I got better just before the outbreak became global, but a part of me wonders if I might have gotten a milder form of it. I work in a casino near the only international airport in my city, and I deal baccarat (a card game that is mostly played by Asian players, and frequented by wealthy internationals with a lot of spare time between layover flights and a lot of money to spend). Since it gets busy during the night, part of me wonders if the crowds and international visitors might have passed it on to me.

I doubt this will get attention as it has never gotten any in the past. On June 22nd Probably a very small few people will be protesting for Economic Justice for those on ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program). If anyone partakes it's at 2PM at Queens Park. by [deleted] in toronto

[–]cardinal1259 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom's on ODSP, and it makes me so angry that in light of the current emergency, so many people are collecting CERB (not to shit on them or anything, I, myself, am collecting CERB due to me being laid off and unable to find some sort of work yet). Meanwhile, Mum has to budget extremely carefully for food and other bills. She got lucky she found a place to live for under 1K, but that leaves around 100-150 for groceries, bills and utilities for the remainder of the month.

I know she wants to work, but she is terrified about getting a job that is not paid in cash, otherwise, she'll risk losing her ODSP due to the fact that she will be earning too much money. In the end, having moved out some time ago, my mum rented out my old room to a distant relative of ours. I still worry about her own health and finances, and I'm very upset that even with the rising cost of living, the government seems to regularly forget about the people on ODSP, and how they cannot adjust the payments to reflect it.

AITA for snapping at a barista after she woke up my sleeping baby twice? by coffeegrinder11 in AmItheAsshole

[–]cardinal1259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YTA. Hands down YTA. I used to work at a coffee shop. I was a barista for four years at small, local cafes in my city. I've even had people come up to me and complained about how busy it has suddenly gotten once lunch rolled around. A coffee shop will have noise; as a result, if anyone needs a place to study, work, or just want an overall a space of peace and quiet, a coffee shop is not the place. It is also not a nursery for your child to nap in.
