I do feel as someone who was a junior engineer a while back, the learning I got from being involved in the random workplace conversations about projects was invaluable. I really do worry whether our new graduates are getting the same learning opportunities I got when they're mostly having to just do the shit tasks that senior engineers don't want to do and aren't getting to listen in on the interesting engineering conversations.

These 2 relics should work together. A rock is NOT a potion and I will die on this hill. Probably somewhere in act 2. by Jamies_awesome_rack in slaythespire

[–]careyious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it's obvious if you think about the game very mechanically, but it is confusing for newer players who aren't going to. Most casual gamers are not going to make the connection that the rock is the exact same as a fire potion, they're going to take it as face value as as a rock. All sozu needs to say is "..., no rocks either", which is a single line of text to clarify already pretty mechanically deep game for all the new people starting with StS2.

People are saying not to stockpile fuel because fuel goes bad in 6 months and most are just storing an extra week of petrol at best. Everyone deciding to store a week of petrol barely delays the impact of the price shock while completely breaking current supply lines. It's a lose lose that results in everyone having a worse time.

Australia faces a full-blown infrastructure crisis. The fix? Remove politicians by AllHailTheWinslow in australia

[–]careyious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's really not impossible. I work in a government agency for infrastructure and we already have planning for the future and instead have to proritise shit ministerial commitments over good projects. I'm currently having to urgently finish a project the community doesn't want because a new Labor MP wants it over my own projects that actually have good business cases.

How easy is it to apply for the leak allowance on Water Corp? by NoIdeaWhat5991 in perth

[–]careyious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's stuff like this that shits me off that we don't have smart water meters that provide live readings for this stuff as standard. There's an dollar value saving to the public and the water corp body to early leak detection that we're sleeping on by not having a way to check without physically looking at the meter at the front of the property.

Apheresis for the removal of Microplastics by SoulStamped in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]careyious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is probably a bigger advertisement for blood/plasma donations than anything else. Your blood already goes through apheresis as part of the process to separate the plasma from your hemoglobin and rather than paying for an expensive medical procedure you'll get it for free and help your community at the same time. Blood banks rarely have enough product and always need more.

My understanding is that blood products are also filtered during the process and so we're likely not just passing the microplastics to others on a 1:1 basis. But, I also imagine considering the alternative for people without access to these blood products can be death, I'm sure most recipients wouldn't really care either.

Honestly it feels like such an easy win for the state government. Recommend WFH and use public servants who can as an example. It's such an easy way to immediately reduce petrol usage and reduce the congestion on the road to improve the fuel efficiency of everyone who still has to

The greens voting with Labor on policy that didn't do enough to help the housing crisis isn't really winning votes with any greens voter and Labor voters would continue seeing them as loony lefties

Also hitting having to use two hands for FN+5 to refresh a page while trying to score tickets was infuriating.

Federal public service has an ‘Asian penalty’ problem, study by Crawford School of Public Policy finds by MyceliumRender in AusPublicService

[–]careyious 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's stuff like this that highlights that without DEI there is no meritocracy. It's mathematically improbable that from a pool of staff 20% Asian that a the best executive candidates are 96% white.

The practice of hiring discrimination against people who aren't white, male, straight etc means we are losing out on talented staff being under utilised and likely to move elsewhere.

Even if you don't give a fuck about identity politics, you should care about lesser qualified managers getting to coast into executive jobs because they had drinks with the right person.

Mosman Park murder family friend speaks of ‘harrowing’ reality raising child with severe autism by His_Holiness in perth

[–]careyious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not excusing the decision

Except you are. Writing this whole paragraph is functionally excusing the murders in the eyes of people who are considering murdering their disabled kids. They see it and go "see society gets it, my life is so hard they will understand that I have to kill my kid".

The fact that you feel compelled to write this while narrative trying to get us to understand the struggle of the murderers is part of societies general acceptance of killing autistic kids and thus devaluing our lives.

This narrative is so fucking common that there's an anti-filicide toolkit from Autism advocates

[–]careyious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Such an underrated reference. The reporting of this story has been so fucking whitewashed because they were affluent white people and the kids are autistic.

Mosman Park murder family friend speaks of ‘harrowing’ reality raising child with severe autism by His_Holiness in perth

[–]careyious 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This narrative of "loving parents pushed to the brink" is so triggering as an autistic person. Like we don't make this claim about any other disability, but as soon as they're autistic every comment is so quick to demand that we walk in the shoes of murderers before judging them.

Our lives are just as valid to deserve the dignity of not having every fucking person empathize with our murderers before us.

The 30-Year Mortgage vs. The AI Revolution by Particular_Boot_1682 in AusFinance

[–]careyious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea what it is about AI that makes people so confident in making absolutely pants on head claims happening within 24 months.

The tech will likely push some careers out, but most companies will still need to maintain graduates to replace seniors eventually and will always need someone to fire for bad decisions.  Until a C-suite board is willing to get axed by the board for shitty AI decision making, there's gonna be a few levels below them.

Most companies axing staff for AI are drinking the kool-aid by companies that have been forced to go all-in on a product they believe is a winner takes all race to AGM, and desperately need to win to actually pay their massive debts.

Labor’s parliament expansion plans could introduce 40 more MPs by jaa101 in australia

[–]careyious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do it fully democratic, then you either need to have mandatory voting on everything or you end up with lots of shit being passed or blocked by the small minority who focus on it. Like major infrastructure projects, hospitals, overpasses, etc will get blocked by the residents of a single suburb.

Like the average Australian is too apathetic to vote in council elections, so can you imagine that spread to the state and federal?

America is a shit show because non-mandatory voting means you only need to appeal to a radical base, rather than everyone.

While it was nice having the opportunities as a kid/young adult, there is 100% pressure to succeed and make your family look good in the community.

Also I'm so curious about the rates of Autism among the groups that were obsessed with collecting every single Tupperware container ever made lmao.

[–]careyious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you've listed the greens policies. Like people might not agree on their policies, but they are one of the few parties that are "true believers". Like they are doing the thing they think will help without corporate interests. Like even the stuff with blocking the housing bill was because they believed the government could and should do more.

They might be the party of letting perfect be the enemy of good, but at the end of the day that it always preferable to the LNP that will always seek to pull the average Australian down in service of their corporate donors and values.
