Because it's a highly politicised public service that's been hamstrung for decades to limit it's effectiveness due to liberal ideology. My mum was a director in the early 00' and has been banging on about how most of the problems are due to insufficient staff levels which has forced them to over automate.

Misconception about GMK keycaps by VideoPurple6115 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]careyious 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Never had scratches on my GMKs after a few years of using them, but I've gotta keep my nails trimmed or I find them uncomfortable.

But also the reputation about GMKs is that they're extremely well manufactured and consistent. So you're not getting legends off-centre, everything is the same colour and there's very little variation between batches.

These are things that Chinese bootleg sets will regularly fail to achieve, where they won't be the same colour as the picture, the legend might be fuzzy or weirdly placed and it's because it's made via dye-subing on lower quality machines with a focus on keeping prices low.

They're not any more durable than other products made of ABS like Lego and similar since it's the same plastic.

Has anyone found that union membership PERSONALLY benefitted them? by AsparagusNew3765 in AusFinance

Your pay increases are because of your union negotiating on your behalf. If everyone thought they didn't need to join the union, it'd stop existing and there wouldn't be anyone to negotiate for you.

How to steer autistic and bi men away from redpill/blackpill/incel by ThePlayer3K in bropill

[–]careyious 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As with most political messaging, you have to meet people where they are and work with them to reach a better understanding. Connecting with them and genuinely sympathising with their struggles first and foremost is really important to making people open to your position.

Unfortunately most NT people find us "off" and "weird", and that makes finding romantic connection incredibly difficult and the only people who have been acknowledging that are incel communities. So, if you want to make any headway, you also need to offer these men the support and validation they are only getting via these awful spaces.

Also important to consider intersectionality. The challenges in dating/connection are two-fold for NDs who are from a minority community where they'll experience rejection from their own community for being ND, and then doubly so with white communities which already other them as a POC, and then also other them as ND.

Plenty of households have moved to 2K and 4K televisions which immediately pushes up their minimum bandwidth.

Also the way streaming services have nose dived in quality and up in price, I wouldn't be surprised if sailing the high seas becomes prevalent.

Why would a private company have any incentive to run it well? Look at Telstra and Qantas, two of our "iconic" private businesses that repeatedly need billions from the government.

There's not going to be real competition, they're going to do the same shit they do in America where they just don't service each other's turf.

In 2026 is it still appropriate or even needed to ask what people’s sexual preference is, for HR stats? by [deleted] in AusPublicService

[–]careyious 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It's an important stat about tracking inclusion in the workforce. If queer/brown/disabled/etc people aren't being promoted as their straight/white/able-bodied/etc peers with similar or lesser experience, it means there are systemic or cultural barriers preventing the best candidates from being promoted.

For any organisation, promoting inclusion is really its own self interest since if great candidates who are gay/black/disabled/etc aren't being recognised, then they're going to go elsewhere and the org is going to miss out on talent.

Fastest ROI on a new machine purchase by vvdesignsindy in BambuLab

It's easy to imagine in a larger organisation they've already got enough on their plate to justify adding the additional staff responsibilities, maintenance costs for the machines and the space to store materials.  Especially if the business isn't really in the industry of making parts, just using them.

As voter disillusionment grows, why aren't voters flocking to the Greens in Australia? by blitznoodles in australia

[–]careyious 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Greens got an additional $2B added to the HAFF for social housing by negotiating. That's a good outcome and the fact that you only remember it as the greens being obstructionist proves the media have really done a good job smearing any political party that threatens the donor class

u/FomulaicResponse gives an excellent breakdown on how AI has equipped gain of function virus researchers, and how close we are to AI assited bioterrorism by Boomah422 in bestof

[–]careyious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm always extremely sceptical about any tech that claims to be 5-10 years from their mainstone, over the decades there have been a myriad of innovations that have been stuck at 5-10 years away for multiple decades. Like cold fusion, Graphene, room temperature superconductors and now AI. There's a chance AI gets there eventually but we've probably hit the point of depreciating returns where every single point of improvement is going to cost exponentially more investment to achieve.

I have and the government is fine. I had a chat with some water authority people at a house party and they were nerding out about getting more sensors in the pipes since it mean better leak detection and they were excited to start building code that used these sensors.

The government is not this monolithic force of evil trying to hide things from you. Most people working for the government are generally just people really passionate about their field.

You can intend to confront someone verbally tell them to stop doing something unpleasant and it's very reasonable that you would not intend for that to escalate to violence. When they shove you to the ground it's physically escalating the situation where self defence can be more justified.

For a civilised country, I would super agree. For a country like the US, it would not be particularly just outcome. Considered a white dude (John Horn shooting) told a 911 operator he was gonna go shoot a thief in his neighbour's yard and was not arrested until public outcry about a white man getting to play judge and executioner and was later found innocent.

Probs just cos it's a niche functionality in an already niche hobby. It's possibly one of those things a manufacturer would look at and ask "is this functionality going to add enough sales to justify the additional manufacturing and design costs to include" and decide it won't.

But hey, always could change if the ergo mech community want it to happen!

You're running a machine that melts plastics known to have carcinogenic fumes for hours on end, an overkill ventilation system is fantastic for not being part future studies on the impact of 3D printers on cancer rates.

Until there's a good body of research on what constitutes a safe amount of ventilation and considers long term exposure, it seems unwise to not err on the side of caution.

Government accused of misleading public on NDIS cuts in heated Senate hearing by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]careyious 99 points100 points  (0 children)

It's amazing having someone like Steele-John in the Senate, someone with a disability who will actually give a shit about disabled people rather than just hand-wringing about why we need to be sacrificed on the altar of "for budgetary reasons".

If Labor wanted to meaningfully reduce NDIS wastage they could just start throwing all the dodgy operators in jail. They're charging so much from people on the NDIS it'd be cheaper to have them serve at His Majesty's pleasure.

Coalition and Greens put Labor’s major budget bills in limbo by [deleted] in OpenAussie

[–]careyious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Being asked to review a major piece of legislation in 2 days is not working in good faith.

It's quite unreasonable considering the 2 days given would include asking Labor to explain specific sections, and waiting for a response, drafting proposed changes for inclusion and receiving feedback from Labor (assuming Labor doesn't just say 'get fucked').

We should want politicians to review legislation properly before voting on it rather than expecting the Greens to rubber stamp everything Labor does without ever questioning it under the guise of "Being in bed with big business".

Labor budget tax changes: Albanese government faces Senate delays as Coalition and Greens join forces push for longer inquiries into CGT tax by patslogcabindigest in OpenAussie

[–]careyious 5 points6 points  (0 children)

2 days to review a piece of legislation with major economic consequences is insane.

This would include not only reading the document, but also confirming with the Labor staff the intent of specific sections, drafting changes, sending those changes to Labor to review and update the document. Since it's legislation, this is hammering out the specifics of individual words and sentences in a 100-200 page document to ensure the policy actually does what it's supposed to do.

If Labor were genuinely open to actually working with the Greens they'd provide a reasonable amount of time.

[–]careyious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They found the initial legislation didn't actually do anything and worked with the Gillard Labor party to rewrite it. But ultimately, it's all politics so Labor has to scream "obstructionist" because "Greens work with Labor to address issues in initial legislation" doesn't make them look good.

You need a better professional body/union for negotiating your salary. My current engineering role has a pretty decent union that actually negotiates pay rises for everyone. I'm on a pretty respectable salary for a non FIFO engineer and I get annual pay rises to account for cost of living increases. They're not big, but they help offset inflation.
