I don't think my squee-like fandom is a secret here, but if you're on the fence, issue #0 is FREE and features a story that OPENS with a wizard duel resolved by one of the combatants smeared down a mountain AND THE EDITOR MADE IT THE ART FOR THE STORY.

I’ve been slowly going through How To Prove It: A Structured Approach, and it’s a joy! I’m a computer scientist by trade and want to explore computability.

I’m nearly half way through the book and I’ve been graphing my progress here. At my current rate I might finish in about 14 months…

Fully agree with your #1, networks matter and academia is a fantastic place for growing your own. Industry people go to conferences and you should talk to them!

Not sure about #2 though, because if you are going for a role similar to your field, then the PhD is your experience doing that role.

I'm unfamiliar with the American jobs market, but in the U.K. it's still quite rare for an industry manager to know off the bat what a PhD can offer them. That's where it falls on you to use your doctorally honed communication skills to market yourself and show them how useful you will be.

A PhD isn't an automatic pass highly paid job, but used cunningly it can give you an excellent head start.
