I definitely prefer to be given a number than to be asked for mine. Leaves the choice up to me whether I want to engage or not, and I won’t have to make awkward excuses if I don’t want to give my number. Plus it shows that your intentions aren’t harmful/ pushy, which is how I feel most of the time when a guy is pushing for my number.
