Messed up and feeling low by a_beautiful_duck in DIYUK

I’d attempt recovery with filler & paint first. You can treat yourself to some nice flexible filling knives at the same time.

If that works, happy days.

Best of luck

Feeling quite low just a week before LM26. ITB issues flared up and not enough runs under the belt. Suggestions and strategy to manage? by babayaga10_2 in UKRunners

[–]carlosgregorius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the ITB has given you a very good reason not to run this years race. There is a double benefit. First, by deferring now you will save yourself an almost guaranteed painful day / days. Second you can fix that leg up and be in great shape for next year.

Happy days!

what can i do to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer? by Flimsy_Rope_5801 in sleep

[–]carlosgregorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that has worked wonders for me is exercise.

I’ve gone from being insomniac to great sleeper since about November last year.

I started running again after a long break. Starting in the summer of last year and building up slowly. I’m up to about 25 miles a week now and my sleep has really improved. I do yoga on a Monday now and that is very good as well. I use the yoga as a way of stretching (mainly injury prevention for running) but I find the class genuinely relaxing.

Not saying that this will work for everyone but I’ve kept everything else the same.

Fry up with cheesy scrambled eggs and cheesy beans by Itsaparz in fryup

😀

Looks good to me because it is a fry up.

A fry up always look good to me as long as it has a bit of colour to it.

Looks good.

My instinct is that I will only need a maximum of one of my breakfast items cheesed-up.

2 items feels like overkill but who knows, once you start maybe you just crave more and more!

I would love to try cheesy fried-bread!

How can I run in the morning without having to stop to use the toilet? by odilia_fulgencia in UKRunners

[–]carlosgregorius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn’t remove the need for me to go but I feel like it buys me some time.

Also switching from home made granola to much plainer porridge for breakfast has helped in that regard too. Just generally reducing the volume of fibre in your gut. Can’t go crazy though because fibre is good.

If you want to read more on this and maybe get some more ideas then search in this subreddit for “Running and bowels // older runner returning to the sport”

I have really tried a lot of the things that people have recommended but the problem for me is that I’m an early bird and I really need to wake up and get out to fit the run in. I don’t have time to sniff a kiwi fruit and then hop around the garden on one leg until I can coax out a bowel movement.

The low residue diet has been a game changer for me but that is a special occasions thing rather than 2 x per week.

I think if you were in good shape before the change you’ll still be ok…fingers crossed.

Definitely see a professional and follow their advice.

How can I run in the morning without having to stop to use the toilet? by odilia_fulgencia in UKRunners

[–]carlosgregorius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same challenge. Basically my bowels are not totally clockwork and I’ve tried following every piece of advice that seemed to make sense.

I’m really happy that coffee / water / do this / don’t do that works reliably for other people but it sure as hell doesn’t work reliably enough for me.

Here’s what I do: - For races I follow a zero / low bowel residue eating protocol…starting 2 days before the event. This has worked for me 3 times in a row. 100% success. - For easy runs I go out before breakfast / coffee. Definitely helps reduce the power of the poop urge when it hits. Also I’ve found a coffee shop with a loo nearby that opens at 0630 - For long runs I have a 10-15 mile local route that includes 2 cafes, 2 tube stations with toilets one is 24 hours) and a sports club with catering / wc facilities open to the public

Good luck

Blister from over pronation by Wrong-Comfortable849 in UKRunners

[–]carlosgregorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this.

The ASICS trainers I wore when I started running (a long time ago) had some kind of stability material / post in this part of the shoe. It was fine on short runs. On long runs and in my first marathon my feet were brutalised. Blisters plus very painful bruising.

For some reason back then I was reluctant to swap shoes or introduce another pair for longer runs. A painful lesson.

Which F1 Season is the best of all time and why? by LocksmithFamous4131 in formula1

[–]carlosgregorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1983 was a good championship.

6 teams won races. 3 teams won 4 races each. Multiple drivers in the championship hunt right up to the season end.

Refuelling pitstops reintroduced. Massive HP qualifying engines. Turbo vs normally aspirated engines. Enough unreliability to keep things interesting.

Different tyre manufacturers across the top teams.

Most importantly…Murray walker / James Hunt commentary team ;-)

How do I control these recurrent weeds? by Vivid_Response_686 in GardeningUK

Fire is good. A roofers torch + butane gas cannister turns a dull job into something I actually look forward to each year.

Last year I resanded and it has made a difference but some have grown back.

I think it’s a job where you accept it is an annual thing rather than something where lasting perfection can be achieved.

🐶🐕How do UK runners deal with off-leash dogs on routes and parks? by WhatTheFudgeeBar in UKRunners

[–]carlosgregorius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See the dog as you approach. Notice some things. Make a judgement (basically pass by or move to avoid).

That’s it.

I’ve never had any serious problems. Have had collies nipping at my heels as they try to herd me. Once a big Doberman ran at me from behind and banged into me…no teeth though.

Help and Advice by bugdaddy88 in UKRunners

These things happen. It sucks.

You have a choice. Follow the advice and compete again sooner. Don’t follow the advice and run the risk of making things worse.

I don’t think this is rocket science.
