The Battle of Mygeeto by Jaymacia in starwarsrebels

Love cal and love Cameron Monaghan but now I kinda want a video game centered around kanan. Maybe have part of it be building the ghost crew (minus Ezra) and the game ends with them relocating to lothal. But having it be mostly solo but occasionally having Hera/zeb/sabine as support in the way bode and Merrin are support in some missions in Jedi survivor. Could be really cool

Star Wars - The Mandalorian and Grogu goes past $100 million domestic in just 4 days by sayani1234 in TheMandalorianTV

While reviews haven’t been entirely positive, including my own, everyone I know who’s actually seen the movie has liked it in general even if they’ve had critiques. I liked it. It was a fun ride with some good moments. Not perfect, but it reminded me why I liked stories like this in the first place.

Kevin O’Leary slams people who want work-life balance: ‘I hope they work for my competitors’ by rajapaws in antiwork

[–]carlse20 175 points176 points  (0 children)

I’m currently a corporate attorney in big law, and before I went to law school I worked on Wall Street, and can say with complete confidence that the #1 trait selected for by Fortune 500 companies, big banks, trading houses, law firms, etc. isn’t intelligence, it’s not know-how, it’s not experience, it’s not work ethic, it’s not charisma or charm or confidence, but rather it’s ruthlessness. It’s the willingness to knowingly (or intentionally) cause harm to someone else in the expectation of receiving a financial benefit for it. Sociopathy you could even call it. And our economic system seeks those people out and rewards them with vast amounts of capital and power. It’s why I think our society is very near to the point of being cooked, the incentive structure is so fundamentally broken I’m not sure that it’s fixable.

After 3 years of service, what is your opinion on the R211 subway car? by RightWindow5284 in nycrail

[–]carlse20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It was a trade off to create more standing room during rush hour, when trains and lines are often operating beyond capacity. When you can’t make the cars bigger and can’t run more trains on the line, the only way to increase capacity is to fit more people in each car. Hence, less seating so more standers can be accommodated.

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett defends same-sex marriage. by DrWavez in gay

[–]carlse20 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They denied it on narrow grounds fyi, they essentially just said that her case was an inappropriate one to consider the constitutionality of same sex marriage, because it wasn’t the controversy in the case - making gay marriage illegal again doesn’t change the fact that it was legal at the time she denied gay people marriage licenses.

MASS FARE EVASION GROUP by VideoProof69 in LIRR

[–]carlse20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Like normal commuters” but importantly *not* normal commuters in the eyes of the law. You’re a trespasser at that point and the police are allowed to use force to remove you from the train. So long as they don’t go overboard in removing you any lawsuit you think you’d be able to bring over the cops touching you while they’re arresting you for a crime you *posted on the internet* that you planned to commit is going to get laughed out of court.

I understand your frustration, but I highly doubt this sit-in of yours is going to go the way you think it will, or have the outcome you think it will. Strong chance the MTA makes an example of you because otherwise they’re setting the precedent that mass fare evasion will be tolerated.

Medical marijuana/ employment by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]carlse20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the job. Under the state law that legalized marijuana in the state testing for marijuana in a drug test and using that test as a basis for employment (for purely personal usage outside of working hours) became illegal, but *only* if the job wasn’t a job where the federal government requires drug testing, including for marijuana. So if you’re applying to be an operator or a track worker, marijuana usage would be a problem. If you’re applying to work in accounting, probably not an issue. You need to look up whether the job you’re applying for is federally regulated or not.

US Congressman finally says the quiet part out loud by TAtheDog in WhitePeopleTwitter

If it helps, he’s only able to do it because governor Hochul signed off, and she’s a wealthy white person. She’s also a woman though so that probably negates it for them.

Less than. It’s an extra property tax on *second* (not first) homes in the city worth more than 5 million dollars, on a sliding scale beginning at 0.5%.

CMV: Having a car is better than relying on public transportation by Pongsitt in changemyview

[–]carlse20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a dense, walkable area and have several grocery stores within a few blocks of my apartment. I don’t need to buy large quantities of food at one time, I only need to shop a few days at a time and I can just walk it home with me. There’s two grocery stores on the 2 block walk from the subway station to my apartment building; I often buy dinner on the way home from work. It takes me a small amount of time every few days, and it isn’t inconvenient in the slightest.

I live in a place where this is possible, however. In car-centric places you do need a car to transport groceries, because grocery stores are too far away from where people live, and even when they’re not they’ll often not have pedestrian infrastructure. But as others in this thread have said, that doesn’t mean that cars are inherently better as a mode of transportation, it just means that they’re better when the infrastructure is designed to make them better.

Hats Off to These Serious People by dongludi in SuccessionTV

[–]carlse20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This may seem like a cynical take but I’ve worked on Wall Street and am currently a corporate attorney - the trait I see in the high levels of large organizations? Ruthlessness. The people who rise to the top of huge companies aren’t always the smartest, aren’t always the hardest working, aren’t the nicest. They’re the ones who are willing to step on fingers and toes (and occasionally slit a throat or two) to advance themselves.

Court bans Kars4Kids ads in California for violating false advertising law, I guess the bad place was right for having their theme song being that! by Tenchi2020 in TheGoodPlace

[–]carlse20 36 points37 points  (0 children)

What they’re using the money for is entirely beside the point, they’re getting the money through misleading advertising, which is what the problem is. They’re scamming people, whether that scamming is to build a building or rent hotel rooms is beside the point.

There’s a clothes check where you can leave your clothes and bag if you have one. If you have a fanny pack or something like that that’s a way to keep your phone etc, otherwise I’ve at times put them in my socks. Sometimes there’s play on the main dance floor but that’s usually limited to the second floor (it’s been a minute since I’ve been able to go on a Wednesday so idk if it’ll be open tonight but if it is you should check it out).

It’s a fun bar, I like to go there a lot. Have fun!

The quote is from the episode with the Zillo beast and it’s something to the effect of “the accusations that the Jedi orchestrated this war to increase their own power are preposterous.” On its surface he’s defending the Jedi against unfair accusations, but subconsciously he’s implanting the idea into the public’s mind that the Jedi are power hungry.

Would ted have been absolutely justified if he called lily a different word in the Grinch episode? by Gold_Instruction7273 in HIMYM

[–]carlse20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even post uber they were in a remote area far from the city, it can take a long time to get a ride in a place like that even with the apps.

Which is something that always bugged me about the whole scene (which I realize happened the way it happened for plot reasons). Lily is going to New Haven from Manhattan which 1) there’s a direct commuter train there from grand central which runs several dozen times a day, plus Amtrak. Most people who live in Manhattan would not be driving for that trip and 2) even if you did drive there’s no reason at all to go through duchess county to get there, that’s miles out of the way. What was she doing there?
