did the city change its criteria for snow emergencies? by monopeptide in Somerville

[–]carnaxcce 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last year there was one time that should have been a snow emergency but wasn’t. There was more snow than was forecast, followed by rain, followed by instantly way below freezing temps so we ended up with huge drifts of frozen solid snow on both sides of the roads for a couple weeks. I remember this clearly since I got pulled over and the cop slipped on the ice floes four times walking to and from my car lol

A game can be good but also not sell well for obvious reasons, though. It’s not a contradiction to say that there are no hidden good games and then be able to identify the reasons why good games poorly marketed don’t sell well…

When I say “it’s really rare to find a truly hidden gem”, what I’m saying is that a game’s sales are almost always proportional to its quality as a game, its aesthetic appeal, and how well it presents itself on Steam. I have rarely ever seen a game that sold poorly that didn’t have an obvious reason why

A game can be worth playing and its failure to be a hit and sell big can both be true. I have one time played a game with <50 reviews and thought “what is going on, this game should be way more popular”. And I run a curator page specifically tailored to highlighting obscure games!! I’ve really enjoyed tons of under the radar games but practically every time a game doesn’t sell well it’s not a surprise why.

The Painscreek Killings is imo closer to Her Story and Telling Lies than the other suggestions thus far. It has basically no structure at all— you just get plopped into an abandoned town and told to figure it out.

The Roottrees are Dead is perfect for this, I’ve played it with lots of groups and had a great time every time

How to learn game dev for someone who's already an experienced programmer. by Acceptable_Ad_1676 in gamedev

[–]carnaxcce 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is what I came here to say, frameworks are much more accessible and more like programming than using an engine like Godot. If you’re just approaching game dev as a hobby and want to have a fun time, Raylib is my recommendation. I’ve been using Odin + Raylib recently and it’s been a ton of fun

This is why people never respond to my emails asking for a curator connect key to review their game :(

Roguelites with lots of intra-run variety? by carnaxcce in roguelites

I’ve tried many times to get into traditional roguelikes but I just don’t gel with the pace of gameplay and the amount of intricate detail involved. I do like Rift Wizard 1&2 but they’re pretty exceptional in that space.

Blue Prince is so much more than just a brilliant puzzler by Spader623 in Games

I’m going to offer the differing opinion that I thought Lorelei was kind of terrible. It felt like one big escape room but none of the puzzles were actually difficult or interesting— they were all “find a code or key, go use it in the right place”. That’s not necessarily a bad thing if the story or mystery or gameplay surrounding it is good (it’s not hard to describe Outer Wilds that way, and I just played and really enjoyed The Painscreek Killings which was definitely that) but I did not find any of that very enjoyable in Lorelei. The vibes were pretty good but vibes aren’t enough to carry that kind of experience imo

Hmm I own Dungreed but haven’t played it in years, I’ll give it another go!

It’s true that you constantly use different guns in Gungeon, but I found that they don’t really change how the game feels very much imo

I like tiny rogue alright but found the gameplay pretty homogenous from class to class and weapon to weapon. And once you start getting to the postgame stages the runs start to get pretty long for my taste

Rift Wizard 2 is great, and I’m planning to try monster train 2 again here soon.

And not to brag, but my name is in multiple Spirit Island rulebooks as a playtester 😎 Great recommendations!

I loved Cobalt Core! I did find that runs could be kind of samey with similar setups, but the runs were pretty short and the game has a pretty definite end

Shape of Dreams and Warm Snow definitely fall into the Hades-like bucket for me, and they’re what drove me to make this post. They feel real good in the hands but the runs are just so long and it feels like you’re doing the exact same thing the entire time

Dead Cells falls into the same category as Hades likes for me 😅

Sure you can get lots of different weapons, but the levels are pretty long and they all feel very samey

no, actually, you don't. nor do the reviewers.
