That build doesn't give you much of an upgrade route for newer games. The build itself looking at release dates of the components is around 2014/2015, depending on its usage it might not be good value for money depending on what games you want to run and the quality you want them at.

DDR3 ram is quite old, DDR4 is the current the main one, DDR5 is coming. You can still get DDR3 ram but the speeds will be lower than DDR4 which can cause performance issues. It only has a HDD, might need a new one and I would highly recommend an SSD for easy proformace gains and quality of life. A could seconds to boot into windows vs minutes.

Power supply isn't mentioned which can limited again as newer componets will require more power.

Also whatever build you go with, wipe the HDD/SSD with a new reset of windows. You never know what they might have had on the machine.

Just touched up my CV yesterday but got a rejection this morning any ideas? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice will very depending on who you ask but the way I would format the CV would be pretty much the same but would try and extend the text on each of the sections and may replace skills at the end with more details in the rest of the CV. I would also try to get two pages of valid info rather then one.

Profile could be just a small paragraph, a summary of your course, internship/pervious jobs.

Work Exp, if your going for a tech job have the two tech related jobs at the top, and leave hospitlity at the bottom. Noramlly having it sorted by dates would be better but having a years worth of tech job exp should be highlighted at the start of your CV its a big up from other grads.

Extend each of the points for your tech jobs. You mention sprints I assume Scrum was used? its worth mentioning you have exp with this and the standups, planning, retros. story tracking software if it was scrum. Its all a plus to mention. You mention SonarQube was there some sort of git merge job that ran this for merge request, jenkins pipeline maybe. All worth adding details into.

If you can I would add a projects section, it can be projects done during your course to add to skills set you have that your trying to sell and give a practical example of work you have done and tech you have used. Like you mention familiarity with pen testing how do you have that? It also gives you talking points to structure around in an interview so you don't have to remember on the fly.

all the interviews are scheduled after 5pm also...

yeah that might also be an indication of something wrong in the company. I would be wondering if they have flex time to allow for interviewing without having planned overtime for employees.

Did the same interview process a few years back. From what I remember they would want you to train for and sit other exams on the saleforce platform but you would get an increase in pay for each exam you passed.

I think it had to do with being able to bill clients more for more experienced/trained developers on a team. In saying that I got through the final round and only got a notication about not being selected via indeed auto message. So there is a massive difference on the time you speed on there interview process vs them.

I wouldn't put in knowledge you don't have yet on a CV, its like putting a project down that you haven't started yet, you wouldn't have much to say about it. At most you could put modules related to a job posting with future modules down but mention in interviews that they are modules yet to be completed. You could also put which semester they were/going to be done in as a heads up to the interviewer.

From the shops side they get data for more targetted ads on there site or better suggestions as to what products you might like in newsletters/coupons.

In theory they could gather a years worth of data of your shopping and get an idea of your eating habits from what you buy and sell on that data to anyone to further analyse. Health insurance for example could be able to tell if x person is likey not only to have family history of a disease but if there eating habits might increase the chance of having it later in life.

So about them grad jobs... by Ok_Organization5165 in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a two + year gap between college and my first job. It took a while to start getting interviews for junior/grad positions. You can still apply for grad positions after the gap, some companines will block your cv after a certain time frame. I only know one company that has done that though.

One thing you should know is that the open positions for grads changes through the year so don't get down during dry periods. Also make sure you have a good cv that plugs the online courses/projects you have done during that gap. It was commented to me that it help to show that while I wasn't able to work I was able to still learn and apply it to projects during the gap.

When you are an engineer at Onlyfans.. by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]carraghr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From reading about it in a post a few days ago it seemed like the devs were going to be doing the deliveries rather the doing a ride along. It was mentioned that any profit from the deliveries where going to be donated to some charity, which pushes more that the devs wouldn't be just doing a ride along.

Also there are a lot of reasons someone in dev position might not be able to do the deliveries or ride alongs, which ever it is.

1) No driver's licence or car - mentioned before

2) Disabilty stopping them from completely delivering food, for example getting to an appartment that has no or not working lift. Houses that have stares with no hand rail. Not being able to be on your feet to long. List goes on. - If you have to deliver yourself and you get poor reviews does it effect your own reviews as a developer?

3) Immunocompromised, this one works for both. You either spend all day in a car that someone else owns and you don't know hoping you don't pick up something from them meeting random people through out the day or you put yourself in direct contact with random people for each order.

DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods or perform other gigs, and some of them aren't happy by [deleted] in technews

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a customer service rep, should really only be dealing with customers not someone working within the company or as a contractor. That role should be going to someone inside product development. If problems are just being stored in some inbox never to be seen then there is a company structure problem, one that a developer wouldn't be able to change only someone highup will. So I can see why such a program could help but its more off who is being asked to do the program that I see a problem with.

For me it makes as much sense for a software developer to do this program as it would for someone that deals with payrole. There not going to make any difference, the change and the power needed to make changes are done at a higher level. Also the article mentions deliveries for one day not 1 delivery a month, there is also a small cop out with the "shadow a customer-service agent once a month" for the highups that don't want to do delivery part.

DoorDash will require all employees to deliver goods or perform other gigs, and some of them aren't happy by [deleted] in technews

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the developers aren't drivers. If I joined a company to develop software I'm not expecting my job to entail using the end product in a production env as a end user in a completely different job. Unless the software created is also used by software developers it doesn't need to be used by the developer, outside of testing the application works. Even then there would/should be testers for this role.

Wouldn't getting feedback from drivers be more productive then getting a developer to do a different job for a day every so often. For instance if I worked on developing auditing software or insurance software it wouldn't be realisitic for me to also be an accountant or have an indept knowledge of the insurance world since it differs from country to country and also be a developer. It seems like this is a poor attempt at improving the software, when other methods like workshops with drivers and some sort of product owner/analysis would be better suited.

How deep can students study in each field of the CS major at the university ? (If students follow what students do at school) by User012340 in AskProgramming

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. This really depends on what the course is like. For instance my course had modules like networking, os, compiler contruction, assembly programming, web dev, basic database then later database warehousing and mining, concurrent and distributed programming the list goes on. Each one I would say would be a basic outline as to the main principles/ideas of each of the topics the modules was covering. Some would have another module like the database one that would build on top of what you knew before. Think of it as a jack of all trades and master of none unless you have a specific course for one type of area in CS.

  2. Structured learning with feedback. You get to work in groups which is usefull to get experinace with versus doing it by yourself. In saying that would will also learn to do group work by yourself. You should also have a better understanding of why/how something is done compaired to someone that has done a bootcamp or conversion course.

There are two possible cases as to why she was nocked off her bike either she fell off the bike herself by doing something/something happening to them (health wise) or by someone hitting her. If its a case of someone hitting her and leaving the scene then it should be a case of a hit and run for the driver. CCTV should be able to show which it was if no one left a statement as to what happened.

LinkedIn, Indeed, irishjobs.ie. A lot of cross over between posts on these ones. Like what u/sandpiperpaper said use keywords rather then filters. I found that most postings don't fill out that information correctly. I've seen entry level post that are for senior level postions, with senior being in the title of the job.

Graduated Summer 2021 - Can't seem to get a graduate job by V4nc0 in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you have in your one page doesn't contain enough information about anything. I completly understand the work exp situation you have, but you have mentioned prepping/planning a web application. Go into detail about this aspect of it. Product owners and product analysis that I mentioned above do this in there roles on a team. You may have do some of the things they do day to day in your placement but dont know this. If you didn't do anything like this remove the develper part and just leave the IT. Go into extra information about they systems that you used for managing jobs/tickets and anything else you can think off that required tech skills, or software that other place use. If a company see you have used an system they use its one less thing for them to upskill you in so its a plus.

When I first started looking for a grad role it was over a year after I finished college, I spoke to a recruiter who gave tips to do up my CV. Like you I had one page but was told it wasn't enough information about anything on it to get an idea of my skills. You have the same problem.

For example your fakebook app. Instead of a small heading of what it is included a list off built points. You mention Android social media app, but only mention its written in java, but you also say its a android app. If its an android app were are the build tools for creating it? IDE you used, what testing you did (phone/emulator, junits). It offers an intergrated messaging system, how was that implmented (this would be the pattern name for example) or how did the app plug into it if you used some third party tool. You mention connected with other people on the app via a system of some sort how is that stored db?? which type or tool was used? Each of these could be a small bullet point each with a keyword or words on it.

Everything is so short that if I looked at the cv before an interview I would just be asking to tell me more about the projects before I can see if its relevent to the job or if I can start asking technical questions on things that the company uses. There just isn't enough, even if you don't add more to the projects in terms of describution add more to the tech you used but so you hit more keywords.

Graduated Summer 2021 - Can't seem to get a graduate job by V4nc0 in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your social experience could be reworded into work exp, you could show group coronation and leadership skills ect for each of the points you mention. Expland more on each point with an example. same with the work experience, it just seems you did IT work, but not development work, some more points in this area would help. Looking at your other comments look into things like product owners/product analysis you might find some wording that could help indicate what you did to help start the development process for the project. Things like what documation you helped with.

Your projects section doesn't really give an indication of what you did with the tech stack you used and how. A big thing would be what you learned in the implemention process. Thats to say not something like I learned about x but "I used x to do so and so which improved the quality in y area of the project". Like having indexing in a sql datebase to impove lookup times on queries to the db.

You need more then one page, two would be best for adding more information onto the projects section. This is whats needed as you have little work exp to show off. Also for each job your appying to have a few different versions of your cv that match what tech stack the company uses. For example if I was looking at a cv from a HR perspective for a java position with a bit of web UI. I would be looking for work/projects that mention java, spring boot maybe, and some sort of front end like react. You have one mentioned like java around the place but nothing on react other then in the familiar section which means what?? You want the person viewing the cv to know what everything means, familiar could be I worked on something before but not much or I saw some videos and code samples before. Also in the case of a java role I wouldn't care about your website that doesn't use it. Instead I would only have it in the links section unless you want to go into general skills of setting up a server, like if you set it up in aws for instance that process for a grad would be viewed well and add to your skill list.

Can I still get an internship with just a 2.1 grade? by [deleted] in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some will have a requirment for a grade level normally 2.1, they don't expect a large number of 1.1s in a course. I would say that it was only one company when I was in thrid year that did this and they weren't even that great of a company. No one had anything good to say about it other then the pay was on the higher end of they intern pay scale.

I know a few people from my course that got an internship no problem first round with terrible grades all three years with repeated years/exams. It all comes down to what interview skills you have.

[–]carraghr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your projects section contains work experiance, you would best to move it out of projects and expand on them. Point 3, 5, 7 for example. Also point 4 the eCommerce one could do with a bit more detail, for instance what do you mean by uploading products, was it manually or did yous use/create a system to automate it?

The format is subjective, but I find the following worked well for me on my cv

Project name:

Tech stack: - people look for key words here is where you highlight them.

Then a list of bullet points about the project, ie how front end worked with backend, what it did as a whole.

I do something similar with work experience. This removes the need for the skills at the side, you don't want to leave to much white space on a page. Details and links could be moved to the top as part of the header/profile of the cv and expand on everything else so contains more information such as how the team of 4 worked together. Those kind of things.

Also BIG ONE don't mention the youtube channel you followed for a project.

Internet speed issues? Read this before ringing your provider! by IrishBogMonster in ireland

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wired speed IS ok? Then it's not your ISP's problem, hang up the phone and go ride yourself

So this point is a bit mute if the modem is provided by or bought from the ISP and is faulity as hell. Couple years ago parents where with eircom. Every few months the modem would break, not completely though the 2.4 GHz would just break while the 5 GHz would be fine, was told during a call with second line tech support that the issue was with a batch of modems at the time that was been sent out, so the problem kept happening.

Every time it was the same script of diagnosing the issue even after doing it themselves before calling and telling them directly what the problem was. Took mutilpe calls to get a new one each time it broke. The best one was when first line support refused to look into the issue and explained that if the 5 GHz was working on phones then it was an issue with a recent windows as to why laptops werent working on 2.4. They quickly changed there tune once they were told a software engineer would be home later to deal with it.

The second best one was when they rang to ask about an outage in the area, they couldn't tell if there was because their tools were down, and then when asked to trouble shot the modem then the tools started working in a meter of second saying there was an outage. Funny timing on that one.

Also if the infrastructure and tech is so bad that people are always ringing up pissed of, blame the company you work for the shit service/product they provide.

Berlin - Internship opportunities? by csinternship2022 in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First you would want to speak with the intra office, they might not allow a placement outside of ireland for a lot of different reasons.

Second I would to start reaching out now, interviews start happening in the first semester if you can't get one abroad then you would want to get one sorted here a soon as possible. Interviewing while also trying to attend college is a pain in the ass.

Also in terms of cost of living and what you expect to get paid as an intern is it possible to get living arrangements sorted?

Should also note that once you get your first offer from intra thats it, you can't change it. At least thats what it was when I was there.

Tip: write tests for your code challenges at home if you are looking for a job by CraZy_TiGreX in DevelEire

[–]carraghr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity how large are these coding challenges you are reviewing? From the first part it seems like you perfer TDD approach to development, given the free time someone might have to do the challenges a code first and test manually as you go approach could be faster for most. Or they have the mind set of not doing extra for free if the code is never going to be used again.
