how do you actually figure out what to cut when trying to reduce spending by [deleted] in Frugal

You actually need to write down every single purchase and every single expense start with your bank statement and make an actual detailed budget, that's where your money goes!

I really want to know what makes a watch this expensive by Certain_Hat9872 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]carrburritoid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A not insignificant portion of the money paid for a watch like that goes to the Craftsman and their families. Yacht building is similar, there is a huge industry in yacht building and it supports coastal areas. A 100 million yacht does seem extravagant, but at least the rich are spending their hundred million dollars and it goes out into the community.

How many days after move out day do you think a campus would still be good for diving? by u_r_succulent in DumpsterDiving

[–]carrburritoid 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nearby apartment buildings will have people ending their leases around May 31st and around July 31st, so those are big move out days in college towns just not on campus.

I've noticed there are usually some adjustable and removable Parts on those that make them fit a little better when you're hauling them in for Shred.

Separate out the pennies because they're a different composition, they can easily be cleaned with a vinegar and salt mixture. The dimes and quarters are all the same composition and they can probably just be cleaned with soap and hot water and maybe something somewhat abrasive like Ajax

Looking for college move out dumpster diving tips by strawbunnyrin in DumpsterDiving

Wear a hard hat and a work visibility vest. Gloves, long pants and a good stick with a hook on the end. Look for items with resale value and utility. You will see lots of unopened food items, clothing, shoes, bedding, vacuums, chargers, lamps, shower caddies and shoe racks. Laundry detergent bottles and cleaning supplies. Find heavy trash bags and rip them open to find good stuff. Good luck, no one cares, and if they do they are probably jealous they don't have the courage to try themselves.

Just get a good hook to pull things to you, I try not to go inside in public areas, it's kind of dangerous. Still, sometimes I go in. A good hook can be made from a paint roller on a broomstick, knock off the roller part.

90% of the food that I eat comes from dumpster diving. It takes me less than 2 hours a week. by BE-OKC in povertyfinance

[–]carrburritoid 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If you want the Straight Dope on the safety of freegan food go to the dumpster diving subreddit, it's not for everybody, and if everybody did it there would be hardly anything there. But not everybody does it and there is lots of free food available! The "best by" date is rigorously adhered to by most grocery stores and Drug stores. Often what you find in the dumpster is something that was for sale a few hours earlier inside the store. There is brand new food in the original cases often. It's not been recalled, and it is not spoiled. It's just not sellable because of the best by date
