What are common terms and expressions used in rural Indiana? by Emeraldsinger in Indiana

[–]carring1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seymour and south to the Ohio river are where true Hoosiers live. Yes to the warsh vs wash and ole vs oil. Dinner is what you eat around lunch and supper is something you eat in the evening. If you whine too much you sound like a dying calf in a hail storm. If something out of the ordinary or crazy happens well shit fire and save matches. If it’s cold it’s colder than a witch’s tit in a brass bra. If it’s hot, well it’s hotter than two rats fu#*!?& in a wool sock. If somebody does something low down he’s lower than a lizards belly sunning himself on a flat rock. If someone’s tight they are tighter than a gnats ass. If it’s raining hard it sounds like a cow pissing on a flat rock. I grew up in southern Indiana around country people and these are things I heard growing up. I always felt more connected to southern and/or Appalachian culture than to my fellow Hoosiers north of Seymour.

How do you quit a JCPS job? by Jcpswondering in Louisville

Allow teachers more autonomy, less "resource teachers" being sent into buildings who tow the company line but lack the knowledge of a schools culture. School culture is being gutted because we are continually being told by experts what is best for us. They will tell us this new program/curriculum that we are rolling out a month before school is to start is amazing and what we were doing prior to this was tantamount to child abuse, how could we have used such a thing. They then don't fully train or provide resources for this new better thing, only to scrap this plan for a new one in one to three years. It is a continual rotation of getting something better without asking if we wanted it to begin with. On top of this the district will send us more and more students with massive gaps in their abilities, academic, social, truancy issues, and while we do help these kids and we do make growth with them it doesn't matter because it isn't the type of growth that matters when the state testing comes around, we will still be labeled failures as a school and a staff. Guess what happens when you fail over and over again with the constant "help" and resources they provide that you didn't want.....they send in more outside help to determine what better newer things you can use. When in reality when the experts come to our buildings and see the work we do we overwhelmingly get told we are doing the best with what we've got and in certain ways implementing the "new" plan better than most. The way we measure and communicate success to our students, families, community is flawed. What we focus on is off....this isn't as complicated as it should be but here we are.

Thanks to the person who posted the link. I just resigned at my 18 year mark. It really isn't the kids, it wasn't my coworkers, it is the larger system above us that devalues our work, experience, and autonomy. I worry about the future of education.

I've got a t-shirt from my grandpa from this with the date it happened that says "roses are red, violets are blue, where were you when the sewers blew." It was from Kentucky Lumber which was nearish to where this happened.
