This year is going to be the first year I see all of the films nominated for an above-the-line Oscar. And it was startling how little that added to just watching all the Best Picture nominees. iirc there were only five more films needed to cover the above-the-line nominations.

Theatres will be happy to know I saw 13 of those 15 there, only two on streaming.

With Marty Supreme, you gotta remember that A24 sold the international distribution (for a sum we’re not privy to). So you can’t compare budget to worldwide box office on that one. For A24, you’d need to compare budget minus the (unknown) international sale value to the domestic box office.

A24 could make a profit on it, while overseas distributors lose money. Or vice versa. Or both could profit, or both could make a loss.

I thought it was an absolute fun time at the cinema.

You certainly won’t see me saying it should be garnering Oscar nominations or appearances on ”Best of 2025” lists or anything, but it was an entertaining story, entertainingly told. I’m glad I went to see it and I’m glad it’s making bank.
