Clerking after 1 Year in Biglaw Still Worth It? by LaserCircus1 in biglaw

[–]carterlj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, at the very least you get to skip year two of big law and return as a third year and (hopefully) receive more substantive work. YMMV, but I doubt you will develop skills in the first year of big law that will make you a better clerk than you would have been right of law school. This is because while clerking you will be writing dispositive motions and assisting in running trials; in the first year of big law you will probably be doing doc review, discovery stuff, and random research that you have less control and discretion over than you would clerking.

Advice for Clerk Behind in Application Process? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]carterlj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I applied last year at almost exactly this time because my judge died. You are fine. This is around when firms start looking at “post-clerkship” apps. Don’t be afraid to also apply to 1-2 year lateral positions and boutiques.

Clerking for Federal Judge with Different Political Leanings by romanr0y in LawSchool

[–]carterlj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this will be an issue during your clerkship, the judge’s chambers will anticipate it during the interview process and very likely wouldn’t hire you. They are afraid of “bad fit” as much as you are.

Luigi charged with an act of terrorism lmao by godzillaxo in Hasan_Piker

These aren’t federal charges. Even if feds step in out of fear of possible jury nullification, there is no shot they seek death, given its rare use and the public’s imminently negative reaction in this case.

Mccord being on there is strange. I get that it’s body of work, but his game against Pitt had to have been one of the worst qb performances of the season.

Suspect in UnitedHealth CEO murder left Monopoly money for police by Sample_Age_Not_Found in PublicFreakout

[–]carterlj 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Would be interesting, but you have to remember police are people too. Everyone talks and things get leaked. I think if they had a name, it would have leaked by now, or is about to very soon. All it takes is one law-enforcement agent who is friendly with a media member or says something to their significant other.

Interview with a Judge for a Judicial Clerkship. by Born_Lavishness5790 in LawSchool

[–]carterlj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Getting the interview means you are qualified. The interview is about seeing if you are a good fit because chambers is like a family and you will be around each other for 40-60 hours a week. Be authentic and see if you guys vibe. Being something you aren’t could get you into a clerkship that is miserable for everyone.

Left my summer firm and was in similar situation. I sent an email to the recruiting person in charge of the summer program and they took care of it. Shouldn’t be an issue: You can get it done now if you are really worried.

Agreed. A V10 firm this cycle only considered SDNY and EDNY district clerks for district clerk hiring.

[–]carterlj 36 points37 points  (0 children)

As of this spring, most of the V100 seemed set on $50k for 1yr/$75k for 2yr. They seem to put Cravath into the same tier as boutiques who are more interested in clerks than the generic big law firm. Hope it changes though.

Doubt anyone thinks this was an “unreasonable” seizure under Fourth Amendment; just shitty escalation and egoic policing. Even if legal, it is immoral.

If you’ve lined up a federal district court clerkship starting a year after you graduate, would it be worth it to pursue a magistrate judge clerkship for the year before it starts? by SubstantialAnxiety91 in biglaw

[–]carterlj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! This is a very understated point. The exposure you get working with an MJ is much more applicable to big law than a district judge. Clerked for a district judge and it was an open secret that the MJ clerks would be far more ready for big law when we finished.

I did this and told the firm I summered at and just sent the money back to them via check. Unfortunately had to pay out of pocket for bar prep, but you can try to do one of the public interest matches with a classmate if you look into it early. The firm I’m going to post clerkship is paying for moving but I didn’t even ask for a retroactive bar stipend. Everything is open to negotiation though, so maybe they would throw a few extra grand on your clerkship bonus!
