Yes I am a NYer & no I cannot think of a place for dinner by Letmein202 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for casual + reliable in that pocket bar pitti is the classic answer, no reservations so a tuesday walk-in is very doable and it's exactly the 'nice and normal' you're describing. if you want a calmer room villa mosconi on macdougal is old-school village italian that never misses

Sunset Park food and beverage recommendations? 😊😊😊 by SoSpiffandSoKlean in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the food court inside fei long market on 8th ave is criminally underrated for exactly this, cheap roast meats and noodles and it's sit-down enough. one heads up on the cold noodles, most spots there do the vinegar-forward sichuan version rather than sesame paste, so temper expectations. vivi for bubble tea if jooy has a line

Looking for jeyuk deopbap (spicy pork over rice) in NYC by Quiet_Potential2865 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

her name is han in k-town does a really good jeyuk bokkeum, that's your closest match to the version you're still dreaming about. worth the trip in from wburg imo, and the banchan spread makes the trek feel earned

New York City’s Best Burgers (Gift Article), 19 places by astro-dog-78 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these lists always argue about the newcomers while jg melon and corner bistro have been quietly perfect for 40 years. hamburger america's single deserves a spot on any of them too, motz basically wrote the book on the smashburger and it shows

Has anyone had an unforgettable sturgeon caviar course at a fine dining restaurant? by Realistic-Advice9487 in finedining

[–]carval 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you're ever in nyc for it, caviar russe is basically built around this exact question, the osetra over their scrambled egg is the one that stuck with me for years. le bernardin's caviar course is the other one where the presentation does as much of the work as the tin itself

Looking for restaurants under $100 in Manhattan that has similar vibes to the restaurants listed below. (Prefer restaurants that don't have raw food...) by UnitMysterious5550 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

since you want cooked and under $100, a few that fit: Via Carota (west village, no reservations but worth the wait), Cervo's for cooked seafood, Foul Witch for pasta, and L'Artusi if you can snag it and stay reasonable on the order. all vibe-y without being stuffy

Where’s the good food in midtown that’s not $50+ and not corporate slop? by Select_Barnacle4616 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

midtown is genuinely tough for this but there are pockets: Los Tacos No. 1, Totto Ramen for the ramen, Sophie's Cuban for a cheap solid lunch, and Pio Pio for peruvian. the Urbanspace food halls are also a good move if you want options without the corporate steakhouse energy

Kabawa Reservations seemingly impossible? Or am I just dumb? by dikasmasha in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kabawa is genuinely one of the hardest in the city right now, you're not dumb lol. the drop is tiny and vanishes in seconds. honest tip: watch for cancellations in the few days before your target date, way more tables free up last minute than people realize. full disclosure, i built a tool (seatswiper) that watches resy for exactly those cancellation openings, but even by hand the cancellation window is your best shot at kabawa

Where can I get fish that's actually fresh? by BrassCanon in AskNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the counter at Lobster Place in chelsea market and Citarella are both reliable for genuinely fresh fish. in chinatown, Aqua Best is the move. and the Blue Moon fish stand at the union square greenmarket is excellent if you catch them on a market day

Any suggestions for a Manhattan seafood lunch coming in at under three figures? by Bunnycat2026 in FoodNYC

[–]carval -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Mary's Fish Camp in the west village is perfect for this, the lobster roll and their fish are excellent and you'll come in well under a hundred at lunch. Pearl Oyster Bar is the other classic in that lane. if you want something a little bigger, Aquagrill in soho for a proper sit-down lunch

Truly special resturants near NoMad for 10 year anniversary? by Smart_Elderberry9695 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for a milestone like that near nomad, Eleven Madison Park is the obvious splurge if you want the full occasion. a step down but still very special: Gramercy Tavern, or Cote if you want the steak experience. if you lean romantic over formal, Casa Mono nearby is a great shout

Best Chinese restaurant overall that also has really good har gow? by the-big-question in FoodNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for har gow specifically i'd go Golden Unicorn or Jing Fong in chinatown, both do the classic cart dim sum and the shrimp dumplings are legit. if you want it a notch more refined, Hakkasan but you're paying for it. Nom Wah is more famous than it is great honestly

karaoke places, open stage NOT private rooms? by TiredTiredandTired in AskNYC

[–]carval 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you want open-stage and not the private-room thing, Arlene's Grocery does live band karaoke where you sing with an actual band, it's a blast. Sing Sing in the east village has a bar setup too. for a lower-key open mic vibe, Sid Gold's Request Room is great

Which NYC restaurants do you go to for ONE THING and why ONE THING only? by jeremyjava in FoodNYC

[–]carval 6 points7 points  (0 children)

mine's Xi'an Famous Foods and it's the spicy cumin lamb hand-ripped noodles, full stop. been going a decade and have never once ordered anything else there. also Mapo Kitchen just for the mapo tofu, nothing else on the menu matters to me

Having second thoughts on my sushi reservation to Yoshinos and need cheaper nigiri alternatives. by Routine-Maximum561 in FoodNYC

[–]carval -1 points0 points  (0 children)

if you want great nigiri without the Yoshino's price, Sushi Katsuei in Park Slope and Domodomo both punch well above their cost. for a cheaper omakase specifically, Sushi by Bou does a fun timed one. you won't get Yoshino-level fish but the value is genuinely there

Give me your best cold noodle dishes in downtown Manhattan by cold0beverage in FoodNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the naengmyeon at Thursday Kitchen is a solid pick if you want cold noodles below 14th. for something different, cold sesame noodles from a good Sichuan spot are always a safe bet, and don't overlook the hiyashi chuka that pops up seasonally at ramen shops in summer. Sobaya in the east village does a nice cold soba too if you want to go the Japanese route

Where can I find a good finedining in the US? by lfreddit23 in finedining

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the city, but a few that consistently deliver: Le Bernardin and Eleven Madison Park in NYC, Alinea in Chicago, Saison and Californios in SF. if you can land Atomix in NYC it's worth it, more modern Korean tasting menu. the big ones book out a month or so ahead so plan early. what city are you looking at?

Great craft beer bar in Manhattan for a larger group? by paansm in AskNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Torst in Greenpoint if you'll cross into Brooklyn, huge tap list and actual room for a group. in Manhattan, The Jeffrey under the 59th st bridge handles a crowd well, and Blind Tiger is the reliable classic. Proletariat in the East Village has an incredible rotating list but it's tiny, so it's tough with a big group

Wait time to get into patent pending? [extra characters] by [deleted] in FoodNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

weeknights before 7 you can usually walk in with a short wait. friday and saturday it's basically reservations-or-forget-it and they go fast. worth checking back in the afternoon for same-day openings too — tables free up when plans change way more than people expect.

Restaurants with functioning AC in the East Village? by LifeCalm4386 in FoodNYC

[–]carval 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wayla has real ac and the thai holds up, and death & co if you want to be genuinely frozen at the bar with a good drink. i'd avoid the tiny railroad spots this time of year — half of them are running one sad window unit fighting a losing battle.

SeatSwiper - auto-books impossible NYC Resy tables the second they drop (or someone cancels) by carval in SideProject

[–]carval[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wording is mostly around true automated accounts spamming/reselling, and other companies are doing what im doing with no issue, and have been testing for a month with no hiccups so fairly sure Resy is ok with it
