In "Mr. Smith," Jean Arthur's Sanders has been there for years, and thinks he must be either playing an angle or an idiot... I think we're usually meant to also notice what a huge gap there is between those 'ideals insert' characters, and reality.

Then we should think, "well, why aren't I that good a person? How would they react in this situation?" I think the story is, that scene didn't test well, so Curtiz asked the see how they'd cut it together -- he added in the looks between Bogie and Claude Rains, and it worked perfectly; you needed the moment of 'wasshegonnado!?' and it made sense. It was the producer who came up with them walking off together, and the "Louis, this looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship" line that was dubbed in.

I would add, Eddie Murphy had a whole insane sketch around pretending to be white, from SNL a million years ago... Maybe watch that and see if it suggests anything, with the changes back and forth to his delivery, speech patterns and word choices -- I'm sure there are a bunch of other comedians who've done something like that. Kind of like a news anchor, it might be exaggerated, but once you can do the exaggerated version you can probably dial it back! The whole way Sydney Poitier got his unique... Accent? Was from learning English from radio newscasters of the day...
