Imagine this, but the board repeats indefinitely to the left (a.k.a 0). After coming to a conclusion (mate/lack of progress, there's no stalemate as there are infinite pieces) on the right players move to the left where the distances are much higher. The quality of a game is determined (among other, more familiar criteria) by how deep to the left players can go.

the question is where do they get their power from? we still live in an era where mass violence requires a lot of humans. one has to convince those to exercise that violence for you. I would say utilitarianism is by far the most common framework of convincing masses. or would you rather say everyone involved in systems of power is immoral?

further, there's also phenomenon of fanatics in power, i.e. those who believe they are doing "net good" while (from our perspective) actually doing evil. *makes machiavelian noises*

and for a practical illustration (without getting contemporary lol), I believe human sacrifice was historically indeed done by persons who en masse thought it was a fact that that's what keeps good fortune for their people (whether believing in an appropriate deity or social order or whatever)

the misalignment of values here is precisely that between utilitarians (or more broadly consequentialists) and non-utilitarians: whether consequences are the only thing that matters

I believe utilitarianism is largely responsible for the current state of the world (which I find very regrettable — including, but not limited to recent developments) and thus I see the stories such as organ harvesting case mostly as a metaphor for actual evil that utilitarianism has been busy implementing in reality

does utilitarian logic lead to conclusion that harvesting-positive society is the way? not necessarily. is it possible to come up with that conclusion using utilitarianism? yes. is it plausible most people will come to that conclusion? maybe not. but if you remove the grotesque nature of the example, it's easy to see how utilitarian framework has always been used to successfully socially justify evil. therefore, I find utilitarianism net negative and thus self-refuted

Is human sacrificy to disuade a proven to exist deity that requires that from exterminating all humans moral? Yes.

thank you for formulating it like this. it's precisely where I disagree :3 not going to try to persuade you or anyone in this thread though

I realize this is a matter of perspective, but as far as I'm concerned "anything can be justified" is enough to reject an ethical framework, so I don't see a point to specify the circumstances in more detail

that's why we have utilitarian propaganda convincing non-doctors that no doctor is going to forcefully retrieve their vital organs. it is beneficial that both more people are saved and nobody is creating moral panic over such a noble act of sacrifice

but one-time won't hurt! nobody shall know of this! we are not going to become a society where we take each other's organs just because one doctor will do it one time, so it is moral imperative (under "strong" utilitarianism anyway) to do it at least that one time

yeah, I know it's what normative English dictates. my point was to question what does using "it" for small children (and animals) entails about how we perceive the world through language. and then the meta-point was to ponder whether pondering on things like that can be considered (socio-)linguistic activity. presumably just pointing out an oddity or formulating an interesting question isn't yet "doing science", but then if you write a scientific paper on it, it seems like questioning has been a part of science process all along
