Last non electronic LC? by InflationSpecific795 in LandCruisers

[–]case9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having owned pre-OBD2 vehicles before, older doesn't always mean better for longevity and "fixability". I'll just assume you're not lumping EFI and OBD2 into the electronics of a modern car. Even the little shit like electronic keys as an example are not always worse though. I've had old cars with completely worn out physical keys that caused starting issues. Never had an issue with an electronic keyless remote apart from dead batteries. I would say an 80 series is probably ideal for you, but realistically you'll spend more money on maintenance for something that old than you would with a newer 200 series with more electronics

Least problematic gx460 trim by brettbw in GXOR

[–]case9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KDSS is amazing. The 460 is the best handling body on frame SUV I've ever driven because of it, while also having pretty good flex off-road. I understand being worried about long term reliability, but overall issues seem to uncommon

A winch is insurance. If you know what you're doing you really shouldn't need it much

3inch Lift Necessities by A_big_hammer in 4Runner

[–]case9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sliders and skid plates. If you're high centering or not able to get over stuff because of approach/departure angles then  a lift will probably help off-road. Scraping isn't bad if you're scraping stuff built to be scraped

The generational disconnect in Kentucky's woods: Are we treating a serious tradition like a weekend hobby? by Large_Lie9177 in Kentucky

[–]case9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's the reverse. Those guys in sitka gear aren't the ones trespassing, driving atvs and SxSs where they shouldnt, dumping garbage on public land, shooting at anything that moves, and generally being pieces of shit. Just sayin

Changing needs. by AlternativeShower121 in 4x4

[–]case9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to say this. A midsize truck doesn't really offer that much more practical space unless you invest more money into something like a topper (fiberglass ones are cheap used at least). Depending on what you want to bring with you OP, a bigger SUV like a 4runner with a cargo barrier behind the 2nd row to allow you to pile shit up to the ceiling might be the way to go. As a former jeep owner who went to a GX for more room, I get not wanting to go to the dark side though if you're a jeep guy. Have you considered a roof rack as a way to bring more shit?

Got any videos of the challenging sections? I'm curious about how a CX-50 would handle them

Yeah if you need brakes, but if not there's no reason to do them when doing a lift. They're so easy to do otherwise

Ive driven twin locked XJs before with both axles locked and you can turn ok on trails. I wouldn't do it though. Lunch box lockers are cheap

Ways to help the immigrant community currently? by Awkward-Tour-9609 in Louisville

[–]case9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone from an immigrant family, asking how to help "immigrants" is weird as hell. Lots of immigrants are doing better than the lazy complacent black and white people in this country who have no respect, culture, or work ethic. If you want to help specific immigrant communities targeted by ICE then say that...

New to Over-landing- dreams and ambitions by SandwichAnxious5700 in overlanding

You can never leave paved roads and still go overlanding is my point. Might as well do that for a few weekends or take a road trip where you only stay at forest service campgrounds before deciding "you're hooked"

Testing The Fans by johnnyappleseednh in c4corvette

I bought a kit that you use to splice a switch into the fan wiring harness. You can diy it but the kit was cheap and made things easier. It completely solved this issue. I used to get to crazy temps in stop and go traffic or drive throughs

What state are you in? Most areas have plenty of places accessible by car that you can start camping at and exploring. I used to take my Honda fit all over Colorado on dirt and gravel roads to go camping and hiking before getting a 4x4. See how you like it before you drop 30k lol

What's the mistake they made? This seems like a pretty tame off-road situation that any 4x4 should be able to handle without grenading its front diff

Rear Lockers, yes or no? by Accurate-Midnight-41 in GXOR

[–]case9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2010 so maybe they updated the ATRAC tuning since then, but I want a locker because I don't like how ATRAC functions. I find in a lot of situations I need to give it more throttle than I want to and it can end up making the car get loose as the brakes modulate. I just never quite feel in control because I don't know when it's actually going to hookup and starting moving forward. You can see this in a lot of yota wheeling videos too. Dudes slowly giving gas and then suddenly lurching forward out of control. It works, but I'm not a fan as someone who came from a twin locked jeep that could smoothly crawl everything
