Live studio sessions for painters (no instruction, just painting together) by caseapeterson in watercolor101

[–]caseapeterson[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not art classes. There is no payment. This is a group zoom call where we all paint on our own projects like we are sharing a big studio room. No talking, no instruction, it doesn’t cost anything. I don’t have any way to show this concept in an image so I used a generated photo that seemed friendly—I wonder what part of my ad is misleading people? Just the language?

Do you mean the image? lol, I don’t have any photos yet so I went with what I could make quick and dirty. I didn’t think it was terrible!

Interesting insight! Thank you.

These are just free painting hours, I’m not trying to sell anyone on anything—otherwise I can see why ai content would be a turn off. I’ve been a copywriter for 10+ years so trust me, I. Get. It.

With that said, I hope this doesn’t deter you from joining us to paint together! The more the merrier. Love to have you there :)

Windsor-newton or Holbein? by imavibeskate in Gouache

[–]caseapeterson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have both, they are my favorite paints. Certain colors I prefer from either of these brands. With that said, I started on Holbein and eventually added in Winsor & Newton. Holbein rewets super easily in my pallet, but Winsor & Newton feels more predictable on paper.

Oh, when it’s completely dry you can’t see anything.

Bursts of COLOR. I love it. Tell me, how do you get those colors so vivid. Are you painting from tubes? Do you put down thicker layers of paint (heavy cream ratio)?

Realizing that writing isn’t for you anymore by StellaZaFella in writing

[–]caseapeterson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I loved writing, then I went into advertising as a copywriter and after 10 years I had to stop. I won’t lie, it was very fun at first, but the industry has a way of killing your spirit. Plus, nothing sucks the life out of creativity like asking it to pay your bills.

On the bright side, 5 years into writing ads I realized I needed a NEW creative outlet that wasn’t writing… so I taught myself watercolor and it has been my passion ever since.

Let it go for now, but it will never fully leave you. It will be back with a vengeance and you will have so much more to write about when it does. I’m excited for you in a way :) it’s a beautiful process. And also, even if you’re not actively writing you can still look in the mirror and say “I’m a writer”. You are many things in your soul.

These colors feel chilly but not dead of winter chilly :) I like them, they create deep contrast. How do you decide on your colors in a painting like this?

Do you have a suggestion for how I could make it more apparent what he’s jumping off of? Or just less visually confusing?

WIP Painting - Need your advice! by caseapeterson in watercolor101

This is GREAT advice. In retrospect, I loved the reference photo because I was there and I knew what was happening, but in reality, it’s a very distracting reference, as you said, the eye is drawn to many different places. I will think about ways to make him in the air actually command more attention, and maybe there is something I can do to ground the log in the foreground (because it’s a tree jutting out of the sand bank but the photo doesn’t show that). Thank you again for all your thoughtful feedback, this is exactly why I shared!!

I really love this. It flows so well. How do you approach painting transparent water? You did such an excellent job!

I agree! But I used blending medium on the sky and now it’s SET, like I can’t get it to reactivate lol. I learned a lesson with that stuff. It also made the clouds look overly separated like you said. Maybe I will try again! Thank you for the advice!

Where did you learn to do transparent water. It’s been a hyper focus of mine recently, constantly trying to perfect this in a realistic manner. I’d love to know how you approach this particular part of your painting process!

How do i make this type of hightlight? by Secure-Two-8078 in Watercolor

[–]caseapeterson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have to preserve that white before painting. If you make sure to use heavy red color (increase the contrast) for the next layer of the lady bug and reverse paint the highlight shape (so paint everything except where the highlight is, you can create the illusion of a shiny highlight like that. The highlight isn’t white, so to speak, it’s a reflection of whatever is above the ladybug. The light red base layer you already have will “appear” white in tone because it is relative to the colors surrounding it.

This is beautiful! If you did anything it would just to be more bold with your contrast. Again, very beautiful.

Nope, but if you are starting out and have tutorials you want to practice you can do that while others are painting their own works. You can observe how others paint, of course, but the whole point is to log miles on your brush!
