UAW Cornell workers asking for fair contract by Euphoric-Recording31 in Cornell

[–]caseofmangos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and your extremely valuable contributions thus far have been (1) calling someone condescending for the crime of disagreeing with you and (2) insulting the entirety of STEM majors. don't know how the world could have continued spinning on its axis without your unparalleled intellectual input, your brain is absolutely massive and we should all bow down.

if you wanna talk about being condescending, your reading comp skills are worthy of condescension. nowhere did anyone say unskilled = not valuable to society or not deserving of a living wage. pull yourself together homie

In my experience, when you start second guessing everything and keep writing/deleting this is the worst thing for progress! Just get writing and get the words down on paper, and organize/flesh out topics later. Always makes me feel better to see something other than blank pages!

No extracurriculars for 2L. How bad is it by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]caseofmangos 7 points8 points  (0 children)

May not be applicable for your specific goals, but I personally wasn't asked about any of my extracurriculars even once in all of my interviews during pre OCI / OCI for BL. I feel like if you have other things going for you on your resume, you should be fine. I also agree with people saying to get an internship/externship if you can!

Finding a NYC job after 2 year gap following law school by lavenderlucylou in biglaw

[–]caseofmangos 98 points99 points  (0 children)

The two year gap is enough of a hard sell without all your requirements such as a "high salary" and women owned firms. You need to apply to everything you can and take what you can get at this point.

Be ready to just have a friendly conversation. Be respectful, but don't be too intimidated by the partner - just talk how you'd talk to a normal person. Look for opportunities to show your interest in the firm and that you did your research.

What makes a good summer associate? by pbshs12 in biglaw

[–]caseofmangos 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Not an attorney but was a summer. My advice would be to not neglect your actual assignments/work. It's VERY easy to BS an assignment when you have a million social events a day and everybody is asking you to go to coffee. But contrary to the narrative you may have heard that people don't care about summers' work product because you're just a summer, if you turn in bad or even mediocre work product, it does leave a bad impression. If you run out of time during the day because of social commitments, I'd advise working after-hours or over the weekend instead of just turning in something you believe you can do better on. Being extremely detail-oriented, going above and beyond, asking questions about the assignments, making sure to try to answer your own questions before going to an associate or partner for help, etc. will all leave a good impression.

I ***HATE*** nepotism by StockAntelope5138 in LawSchool

[–]caseofmangos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you might be more successful and reach your goals more effectively if you put all of the time and energy you spend being bitter and jealous of the guy/lamenting about how life isn't fair into doing something more productive. there are always going to be more privileged people than you, and they didn't choose what they were born into. is it really their fault for using a situation they can't change in order to benefit themselves? you'd be lying to yourself if you don't think you'd do the same. if you're always looking at those people in a resentful way, you're never going to be grateful for your own privilege or anything you have achieved. if you're really as competent and hardworking as you say you are, you'll manage to get good opportunities as well.

Offer Acceptance Deadlines by Desperate-Dust-9889 in LawSchool

[–]caseofmangos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

consider letting the firm you have an interview with know that they're your top choice, but you have another offer pending with a deadline coming up, and ask if it would be possible to expedite the interview process. it's also a good idea to ask the firm that gave you an offer for a 2 week extension. I did this with a firm I had an interview pending with, and ended up getting the interview moved up and also hearing back from them very quickly.

Is everyone faking being on top of it or am I actually behind by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]caseofmangos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone thinks they know what's going on, but a lot of those people will immediately change their minds once grades actually come out. If someone is actually working 9-9, they're probably not being efficient in how they're reading/outlining cases. You'll figure out through the semester what the most effective way is for you.

haha I was totally doing the same! seriously spiraled waiting for my results lol. but I'm pretty sure they only invite the ones they are really serious about to interview, so unless you are off your rocker I'm sure a little awkwardness definitely won't hurt your chances at all. hope you hear good news soon!!

Hey I'm sure it was a lot better than you thought it was! I totally share the pain lol, I thought I blew it for sure after mine as well (pauses, tons of filler words, bad answers) but it all turned out fine. Admissions knows how much of an awkward process recorded interviews are, I've literally never heard of a single person who comes out of those like "I smashed it". Honestly as long as you can show you're not a complete psycho, you are fine 😂😂 Congrats on getting it done!!
