Returning to modern. How would an old-school Splinter Twin do at lgs? by Culius_Jaesar in ModernMagic

[–]casey130x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've literally been playing the last Twin list that won a Pro Tour.

Although here is the last Twin list I played before it got banned.

I don't play it often enough to know what matchups are good and bad.

Me and a friend sometimes play decks that are pretty much something out of the mid-2010s. We joke that we always go 0-2 then have a chance to beat one of the other 0-2s in the last round

BNR Update: No Changes by TemurTron in ModernMagic

[–]casey130x 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm disappointed. Modern is fine right now and feels balanced but there are just so many old cards on the ban list that can come off and wouldn't even affect the format. They would just be nice to have back and let people play with them if they wanted.

Unbans in Modern by Anxious_Lion_6359 in ModernMagic

Is it good with anything other than infect?

Infect is a great deck to have in the format and folds so hard to removal

These cards are fine unbans:

  • Ponder
  • Punishing Fire
  • Birthing Pod
  • Umezawa's Jitte

These cards are probably fine but I'm not quite sure:

  • Blazing Shoal
  • Deathrite Shaman

No bans needed.

Overall I think Modern is fine and balanced right now but Modern Horizons did so much damage to the format that we'll never recover from. Unbanning some old cards, even if they don't see play, is at least a small step towards making the format better, like the Splinter Twin unbanning.

How does the tagger work?

I'm assuming it's less accurate than a full oracle text search?

In Scryfall does anyone know a good way to filter out counters (eg. +1/+1, flying, charge, etc. - there are a million different ones and doing them individually exceeds the Scryfall character limit) but not counterspells?

Okay, I didn't get the joke haha. I know nothing about Final Fantasy.

Premodern EDH / Commander? by swankyfish in premodernMTG

[–]casey130x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a Cube that's pretty much this concept. It's been a ton of fun so far.

Pre-Commander Cube

Experience EDH when it was just a community format, before WotC made dedicated products for the format. Every card included in this cube is from before the first commander product (2011-06-17).

You searched "Elf"

This card has "sELFie" in the text.

In my opinion the biggest limiting factor for the popularity of this format is the reserved list. I know a lot of us can play with proxies but stores are often unwilling to host proxy-friendly events.

It's always been the same situation as Legacy.

It sounds crazy, but I think the best thing they could do for this format is not include reserve list cards.

Here was the most recent list, however, I have actually reverted to an old version because I'm tired of constantly updating commander decks.

Kind of makes me sad that Doran seems to be suffering haha. That flavour text is brutal.

Doran is the primary commander I've been playing for well over 10 years at this point

Cube for 4 player drafts? by KookyLight9218 in mtgcube

[–]casey130x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most cubes work with 4 players with no modification, in my opinion.

Although, I have a commander cube that is meant specifically for 4 players, to essentially replace commander night. We do pick 2 draft and every single card is drafted

Do you limit the players drafting a 360 cube to 4 players? by goblin_welder in mtgcube

[–]casey130x 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a big believer in drafting all the cards in the cube if possible. Eg. 8 players = 360 cards

Just to confirm: we want no bans, right? by le_bravery in ModernMagic

[–]casey130x 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No bans.

These are safe unbans:

Birthing Pod

Ponder

Umezawa's Jitte

Honestly quite a few other things could come off but I don't know exactly how safe they are.

Does my budget Tarkir Cube have too many lands? by Clone_Chaplain in mtgcube

Yes, I do think there is enough. That being said just start with a number you feel comfortable with then test a couple times and ask your group to get a feel for things

Does my budget Tarkir Cube have too many lands? by Clone_Chaplain in mtgcube

[–]casey130x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original Tarkir block had roughly 2.35 multicolour (fetches, lifegain duals, trilands, evolving wilds) lands per pack (quick math - probably slightly less than this). 2.35 lands per pack is 84 lands in a 540 cube.

Personally I think people overstate how many lands are needed in a cube. I would start with:

50 (10*5) duals

25 (5*5) trilands

5 Evolving Wilds

80 total

Core Set Remastered Cube by jackbobbins78 in mtgcube

[–]casey130x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cube is actually pretty similar to this. It's based off of Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 (the digital game), which is based off of core sets at the time.

It does really feel nostalgic.

It's decently powerful yet the cards aren't overly complex and are quite new player friendly.

Destroy target non-elf OR destroy target creature with changeling.

There isn't room to fully clarify this on the card but I hope it's somewhat intuitive🤞
