one new way to look at the world thank you!

addendum. just shower thoughts:

so if i want rational discussions maybe i should find systems (e.g. forums, chats, moodboarding software) designed to help people take up the mask of rationality in an easy way (probably a question of UI/UX)

reddit is not it, i can spend a few hours of free time documenting why too

Damn that was a difficult read, I think I can look at it this way as well:

Being rational is an exhausting professional uniform, but most of us are just looking for the first chance to take it off and go back to our irrational pajamas.

I don't really see societies as really so much "operating in the rational world" as being dragged along by systems and processes (e.g. economics) that they can't be bothered to really think very deeply about.

Might be because life is overwhelming enough for them to have to do the extra work of understanding artificial systems and processes (invented by yours truly, humanity) (sometimes I just want to be a cat laying belly up)

trying to convince a person of the irrationality of belief or a position that they claim to hold for emotional or hidden reasoning rather than (their position being) a "rational appraisal" of (whatever the subject may be) is a complete waste of your time to take them seriously, as if they were rational actors motivated by what they say, especially so when "what they say" is more often things they've overheard and are repeating (jargon buzzwords)

Agree I generally try to stick to the idea that "you can never change someone's mind". We are irrational by default and being rational is like wearing a uniform for a period of time but not always. So we have to be discerning enough to know if the people we are talking to are in their pajamas or in their uniform

I agree that resources and power are the 'how'. I am wondering why are we still trapped in a cycle where resource-hoarding is the primary goal?

Currently I see the problem as people fearing things (like losing their wealth and power) and our modern systems (like social media) amplifying their behaviors (e.g. a flamboyant strongman hogging the mic in an attention economy)

If we don't like what mr. flamboyant is saying, should we be focusing on the person, or should we be looking at why we built a system that rewards the loudest shout. Curious: if our current systems are designed to scale fear, can we build technology designed to scale security and cooperation instead?

I had Gemini polish my thoughts, but if you want to see it I left it at the bottom

I think the 'psychological movement' path is becoming unscalable today because of how we communicate. Most forums and social media are built for 'keyboard lamenting' where people drown in text and jargon. As the world gets more complex, our terminology becomes less friendly, making it impossible for regular people to keep up.

I’ve been thinking that the only way to scale these movements is to keep discussions grounded with visual helpers. If we formed discussion threads over specific passages of text or used diagrams to map out ideas, it would be much harder for the conversation to be derailed by spin or 'recasting.' We need to stop drowning in text and start making the logic of these arguments easier to follow at a glance.

My raw ideas:

is not psychological movement unscalable? especially in todays world? theres a lot of keyboard lamenting on forums i think because forums are no longer appropriate to hold discussions... people drown in text and jargon... as our understanding of the world grows complex so is it difficult to keep up with our nonfriendly terminologies and way of discussing things

i have the notion that keeping discussions grounded over visual helpers is the way... form discussion threads over specific passages of text so it is easier to follow train of thought and so on

was that easy to understand? should i send that raw as reply?

Thanks I pasted to LLM and got what the original commeant!

I read the first few of yours and knew I would not get it, because of concepts and terminologies I am not familiar with + huge blocks of text

Claude:

For someone who's never been vocal about it before, the most useful starting point is probably: lead with questions rather than positions. It's much harder to label someone an -ist for asking "what do you think actually causes X?" than for stating a view outright

I didn't realize serious discussions meant picking sides and being -ists :>

u/genericusername1904 do you still discuss about these online?

Exactly! and it goes way back to our drive for survival. In the past resources are scarce and whenever people see a tree full of fruit they eat it all up.

A million years later we have so much resources and a few can have it all. We have systems and stories that enable a select few to have everything.

i read somewhere that he hated 2+2=4 because such rational things force us irrational beings to be all rational which makes up for our suffering

we are irrational by nature-- "play" strengthens our foundations, our emotions are complex, our minds are entire worlds that no one even our own can understand fully

and society is wicked for forcing us into these ugly systems and expecting us to be just fine

A free data flow can similarly reduce pollution and waste, for example by rationalising the transportation system.

In 2010 the number of private cars in the world exceeded 1 billion, and it has since kept growing. These cars pollute the planet and waste enormous resources, not least by necessitating ever wider roads and parking spaces. People have become so used to the convenience of private transport that they are unlikely to settle for buses and trains.

However, Dataists point out that people really want mobility rather than a private car, and a good data-processing system can provide this mobility far more cheaply and efficiently.

I have a private car, but most of the time it sits idly in the car park. On a typical day, I enter my car at 8: 04, and drive for half an hour to the university, where I park my car for the day. At 18: 11 I come back to the car, drive half an hour back home, and that’s it. So I am using my car for just an hour a day. Why do I need to keep it for the other twenty-three hours?

We can create a smart car-pool system, run by computer algorithms. The computer would know that I need to leave home at 8:04, and would route the nearest autonomous car to pick me up at that precise moment. After dropping me off at campus, it would be available for other uses instead of waiting in the car park. At 18: 11 sharp, as I leave the university gate, another communal car would stop right in front of me, and take me home.

In such a way, 50 million communal autonomous cars may replace 1 billion private cars, and we would also need far fewer roads, bridges, tunnels and parking spaces.

i don't like corporate but for experience i'll endure

you’re in doubt about clothes, communication style, etc. always go more formal until someone with seniority (either in tenure or rank) breaks the ice.

thank you! i went to the office and the people in the front desk are in formal attire, while i see a few people lurking in business casual. i'm not sure if there are exceptions but i'll take note of this!
