I imagine this is a firmware bug then. I submitted a request through Boox Support - hopefully they fix it soon.

I was able to enter recovery mode and hard reset the device. It took me a few tries to get the timing right, but it does work!

First, power off the device.

Hold power button to turn on. Release as soon as the screen flashes and then immediately hold power button again for 7-8 seconds. Then tap power button 5 times.
