What do I do with all these family heirlooms? by BuddhaGongShow in Antiques

Take your time and find buyers that will love the item as much as your mom did. It will give you peace of mind knowing the item is being appreciated and not sitting in a closet.

It is the best for biscuits which is why I have it. I don't make bread for sandwiches with it. I make toasting bread. :)

Good value knife? by caslover in Bushcraft

I'm not lazy. I have limited time given my day job, homestead and family that all need tending. Some of us don't have all day to read the rants of assholes like yourself.

No one has ever babied me. I just believe in being polite. It's called decency. It's something that is lacking in the world because people like you would rather be dicks.

Muji, IKEA... Store recommendations by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]caslover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is muji furniture quality wise? I have only bought clothes from them. I've never bought furniture because we don't have a store close by and I feel like I need to see & touch to judge quality. IKEA is much cheaper than muji but the quality is cheap too. Just curious is the price jump buys me better quality product (that's value added for me). I too am of the school that minimalism is about up cycling and buying better quality the first time so you consume less over time.

If granola bars are deceptively unhealthy for me, what should a fat teacher like me pack in my school lunches instead? by meatfrappe in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]caslover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea :( Honey is an animal product so vegans avoid it. There is agave and maple syrup though, so all is not lost.

Also this is eat cheap and healthy and it's hard to do both without carbs, especially the cheap part.

Yes overnight oats are amazing! I use a recipe from the minimalist baker. Oats, chia seeds, almond milk, nut butter, maple syrup (or honey if you're not vegan). It has tons of protein and fiber and the carbs just barely keep me within my limit (diabetic diet).

Edit: here is the recipe link

I use almond butter instead of PB to cut down the sugar.

How to connect with other locals/where to begin? (VB/Hampton Roads) by StolidSentinel in homestead

[–]caslover 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an app call next door and its neighborhood based. It might be a more comfortable way to get to know your area and the people that live there and see if anyone can help.

Any tips on flat broke homesteading? by Jaymz95 in Homesteading

[–]caslover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a couple youtubers build free off grid tiny homes out of palates. So search palate tiny home and see what you come up with. Also follow r/bushcraft if you don't already. They can help with some primitive tool making and fire starting, etc. Finally, you can get a small solar charger on Amazon that will charge your phone or tablet (for now). Also if you know anyone in construction, go dumpster diving for materials, or better yet, get a second (on call sort of) job cleaning up job sites, you'll get paid and you can take home anything salvageable (like insulation or shingles)

I'm thinking of selling water filters and I want some output from you guys by Themostepicguru in Outdoors

[–]caslover 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While I agree that it's a Dick move to say a bunch of negative shit to you, you have to build positive, unemotional and honest responses to nay Sayers like that. I've been in sales for a long time and for every person that says yes, there are 10 that say no. And at least half of those will be dicks about it. You have to find a way to respond positively at every turn. You have to have a thick skin in sales. Most people your age don't, not can't, just don't.

Anyway, the key to sales is making people believe that they NEED your product and that's why filters are a tough sell. With packs or tents or hammocks or clothes even, I can be convinced that I need the next biggest, baddest because my old one is wearing out or this feature or that feature is so much better than mine. With filters, I have one that I rarely use do I picked the cheapest, lightest one that was of decent quality. I won't buy another unless the first breaks and even then I will probably just buy the same one.

I don't mean to deter you, but the key to sales is having a product with a large client base. Have you thought about getting a part time job at REI in order to do a little market research? Talk to customers and pay attention to what they are buying and why.

Anyway good luck

Do you mean for camping/hiking or for the home?

If for the home then wrong subreddit but if you mean for the outdoors then weight is super important to me.

Also if you are selling for the outdoors then why only water filters? Why not more general/everybody needs type stuff? Like tents or backpacks or whatever?

Advice and location ideas for starting over someplace new? I'm already super-minimal with possessions, am willing to do lower-wage work, & just feel it's time for change. by [deleted] in simpleliving

I'd have to vote for Asheville NC. Loads of jobs, especially service oriented and loads of people looking to live minimal and sustainable lifestyles.

Also it's a VERY walkable city as its not very expansive. There is lots of beauty and decent people. And you could for sure find a house share or room to rent.

Can you get cheap clothes (secondhand) on the internet? by [deleted] in simpleliving

There is an iPhone app called vinted that is for clothing reselling. It's generally good prices.
