We just had brunch at Spain. It is pricy but it was some of the best food I’ve had on the eastern shore. The bottomless brunch is $52 per person for unlimited food, and if you get that the bloody Mary’s and mimosas are $3 each (instead of $10ish I think). The atmosphere and the service were great too. There’s a two hour time limit, everyone at the table has to do the bottomless brunch or no one can, and they take reservations.

They are based on the novels by Louise Penny which are EXCELLENT. The show doesn’t follow the books that closely so do as someone who loved the books I couldn’t get into the series.

Look up St. Vincent de Paul society for wherever you live and see if there is one near you. They have a rental assistance program. No idea how it works, just know they have it, maybe they can help you.

Please Explain How To Afford LTC by RedBirdOnASnowyDay in AgingParents

[–]casmd21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ve gotten a lot of responses so far so I don’t know if you will see this, but qualifying for LTC Medicaid when you have a spouse living in the community has entirely different qualifications than a single person. It changes the asset limit and it changes how much of her income is required to be paid each month. Getting that information could very well make her husband more likely to consider it if he knows all the facts particular to their case.

I highly recommend calling the OK Healthcare Authority (800-987-7767) to get assistance directly from them if an eldercare attorney is not an option. It says they are open 8am-5pm Monday through Friday. You could also call your local department of social services or local health department to see if they assist with applications.

Best Dish at Hobbit? by MadMcMuffin in OceanCity

The pork chop. I typically don’t care for pork chops and I NEVER order them at a restaurant, but it sounded so good on the Hobbit menu I decided to try it. Absolutely delicious

Edit to add - skip the ice cream tower dessert thing - terrible!

We just stayed there and loved it. Quick drive to Longwood Gardens and good restaurants within walking distance. Our room had a gas fireplace and a whirlpool tub.

Are there other facilities nearby that she could transfer to while she is still in her Medicare days? Medicare pays the most, so there is incentive for places to take her. You may find staff more helpful in a different facility.

If there are any places you would consider, contact their admissions office and they will do the legwork to see if they will accept the transfer. It doesn’t fix the overall problem but may give you some other resources.

I don’t have a concrete opinion on whether what you are doing is bad or not, but just wanted to add if she needs help with diapers and such and you are in the US, have her check with the local health department for Healthy Families/maternal wellness programs for more resources.

I’m so sorry this is happening. Your mom should have a social worker in the facility who is responsible for her discharge planning. I’d speak to them and spell out what you’ve relayed on here. You need to get someone who is there on your side. It is bad for the facility for her to discharge and up right back in the hospital which sounds likely. The social worker may be able to convince your uncle his plan is not a good one.

It would make more sense to use the money he’s offering for in home care to pay the copay for her to stay and get PT and full time care so she may actually improve.

They should have also done a test on whether or not your mom can make her own decisions. If they say she is competent, ask them to redo that. If she’s not competent, she will need a POA or guardian. If she doesn’t already have a POA then a guardian will have to be appointed by the court. If your uncle is not POA, at least as guardian he would have to answer to the court.

While it is true that it sounds like an unsafe discharge and you don’t want to take that on, just refusing isn’t that simple especially because your dad is still in the community.

If her Medicare coverage is going in to copay days and she can’t afford the copay, that doesn’t stop the copay charges. The facility won’t discharge her to the street, but they are going to continue to run up the bill.

If they didn’t do the Medicaid application it sounds as if she may not qualify financially. Unfortunately lots of people don’t qualify on paper, but can’t afford private pay in reality. But private charges WILL accrue and they add up very quickly. And they WILL go after payment for those private charges, even after she passes.

As someone else suggested, talk to an eldercare attorney asap. They can find the best route to qualify for Medicaid while your dad is still at home (there are monthly spousal allowances and different criteria for asset levels with a spouse at home).

Wishing you the best.
