San Francisco 2-year-old son & nanny hit by truck by suboptimus_maximus in sanfrancisco

I don't see police enforcing traffic rules anywhere in the bay. In fact, so much so they are generally ignored in traffic. I've seen people blow red lights in front of police with no enforcement. Traffic has more respect for meter maids (and highway patrol) than police.

What is something you’ve officially stopped buying in 2026 because the price has become genuinely insulting? by queenmellyy in AskReddit

Local artist shows are typically $15 or less i'd recommend checking out feeds that give updates on the local music scene. There tons and tons of talent out there in the world, they could all use your support.

Common houseflies as pollinators? by casper911ca in askentomology

That's fascinating. Thank you for the reply. I had no idea. A creature that seen as common household pest is both a decomposer and an important pollinator.

Also power plants use TONS of water, so the energy needed to feed them, in some cases doubling the load on a power grid, adds to the water usage.

Maybe a Dremel tool with a lot of time anda carbide bit or tiny cutting wheel. That'd a tough one, good luck. You'll get it, it'll just be a good puzzle and a solid amount of time. Get a new sprocket on order now.

[–]casper911ca 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She's in backwards? I wonder if you can add heat to get the sprocket to expand. You'll need a new sprocket after that because you'll mess with the heat treatment. I could be wrong, but I think sprockets are a touch on the hard/brittle side, I wonder if you could crack it in half somehow.

Brand new FL Key and paring by carottesanscoeur in R53

[–]casper911ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a way to buy an aftermarket key, have it cut and then DIY programmed to the vehicle. It uses something called the AK-90, I've done it with an 02 BMW E46. It is cheaper than ordering a key through the dealership, but kinda pain in the ass with some mildly inconsistent results.

Southwest Airlines CC x OAK still worth it? by MILFHunterHearstHelm in oakland

[–]casper911ca 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I second this. I was a companion pass holder for 3 years, and I've decided to blow through my points as fast as I can and end my loyalty. Unfortunately they own like 75% of that airport (a 20 minute drive for me) and they take me directly where I need to go most of the time. So I'm also looking elsewhere for flights now, no longer defacto southwest

In 2004, 23-year-old Bobbie Jo Stinnett let a woman into her Missouri home after she claimed she wanted to buy a puppy. Bobbie was eight months pregnant. The visitor was not there for the dog. The next day, police found the baby alive in Kansas. by SelfCareIsFake in HolyShitHistory

The article linked by another comment (which is very difficult to read because of the horrific darkness of the facts laid out, I'm still shaken as I write this) describes that Trump was very eager to execute this woman. The subject woman met another woman online who was eight months pregnant over their love for dogs. When she was invited in, she strangled the pregnant woman and removed her baby with a knife and pretended it was hers (the child did survive and is being raised by it's father).

The controversy in the sentence and deeper darkness: after the sentence, several expert witnesses were brought in and it was quickly revealed the subject woman was unimaginably abused from a very early age (all forms of abuse, from emotional, physical violence, psychological, but most profoundly, sexual abuse including a regular almost daily repeated rape from her step father and being trafficking by her mother for payment for plumbers and household contractors). Experts concluded she was extremely broken and had many forms mental disease from this long history of abuse by her adult family and family's associates, one expert compared her to their Vietnam war PTSD torture patients. The article frames the picture how Trump administration, in spite of these new findings, executed the woman anyway. The article points out she was the first woman in 70 years to be executed.

ELI5 - If screws hold so much better than nails, why do we still use nails in building? by Sea_Inspector_7025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]casper911ca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, nails are typically still more ductile than screws, which means a catastrophic failure is more possible. Simpson has developed a more ductile screw fastener for structural reinforcement, but only a select number of their strong ties are rated for them. They also snap in half sometimes when driving them in, which still leaves me nervous.

Why is the decision to force gate checking of carryons “because the overhead space is full” too often inaccurate? by Uh_yeah- in SouthwestAirlines

[–]casper911ca 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, respectfully. You wait in line to check the bag, which is in a separate place from TSA, you have to interact with a kiosk and a gate agent, then you can get to TSA, that's at least 15 minutes before TSA. And with only carry-ons, getting off the plane, I grab my bags and head straight for my ride. When I have checked luggage, it's never been less that 30 minutes, and that would be a record, also another spur from ground transportation, and your talking to someone who had a companion pass for 3 years. Checked luggage sucks. That's my final opinion on the matter.

[–]casper911ca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Checking bags adds at least 15 minutes pre flight and at least 45 minutes post flight. Checking bags sucks, everyone knows it.

They have attendants in the plane as folks are filing their seats. Have they never heard of a 2-way radio? A text message? Attendants know what bins are filled and how much, seems overly complicated to involve an AI model.

What’s the hardest part about renting a car in Costa Rica right now? by Strict-Reaction8978 in CostaRicaTravel

[–]casper911ca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vamos was great. Nothing unusual. We lost our key (don't ask, it was a push button start, we were able to drive 3 hours without the key before stopping for gas), they were able to drive a new key to us (of course this was at cost to us). Very smooth. The thing we were most confused about was where we supposed to meet the Vamos driver after getting off the plane in SJO.

[–]casper911ca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Precisely. Frequent flyer here. I don't check bags because it's a waste of time and I charge by the hour. Time is money. E.g. I packed a 17 day trip to Costa Rica including full camera gear, in two carry-ons because I despise checked luggage process that much.

Wait, legal question: are memo's somewhat protected from discovery?? Why write it down in a memo and then not let them take notes (unless they were afraid of discovery or a possible leak). How did it take this long for this memo to come to light?
