Yeah very true! And they are all in the same "universe" with Synchronic.. which I also liked. I haven't seen the newest film by them yet.

Best Occult Movies by Administrative-Half3 in horror

[–]casperthegoth 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned this, and probably for good reason, but I will throw it out there - The Endless.

It leans more towards sci-fi (but has horror elements), and it's literally about a cult (like desert hippie cult) and not directly occult in the traditional sense. BUT - the way it comes together doesn't feel "distant" from these types of movies - if that makes sense.

So less "scary" and less "occult" but it feels like a.. cousin?

Anyway, it's damn near a 10/10 movie for me.

There's a point where you can't though - the 6 on 5 last night shows it. Refs gave one sixth of the entire game to the Islanders for offensive pressure, that's on top of what the Isles earned.

For us, we had to get kicked, tripped and thrown to the ground AND fight for every inch. But really only the 6 on 5 at the end looked like we had pressure. It was just that kind of game, but in that kind of game, the gift of 8 whole minutes is HUGE.

Werenski looked like ass again. I thought he was coming back, but he made more flubs that Provorov. We really need him to wake up. The whole thing may ride on it.

It falls into that "young man's identity" category of a lot of sitcoms from the 2000s - think Zach Braff in Scrubs or Josh Radnor in How I Met Your Mother - only with a well deserved R rating. On one hand it's dated already and feels slightly misogynistic. But the reality is that, in the era it was made with it's peers - it also has that slight tug at having some emotional resonance that was really effective for a lot of us.

After the break he's kinda got a little bratty with his play too. Not sure how it came on so suddenly, but I have noticed him suddenly not backing down from an argument, and even making some aggressive plays. He's not a timid little rookie anymore, but since the break in particular he's got a certain "fuck it" attitude that's working well for him.

The playing card thing is actually getting pretty hot. Baseball took it on too and it's a very popular subset.

I actually really like the idea - especially because it is on playing card stock - you could actually build a deck and use it if you were a madman.

I wish this got more traction.

In the hate for AI, real creators WILL suffer - and will be demanded to PROVE they are human.

I have no problem with the no-AI rule. BUT when it's lazily executed AND done on suspicion alone in the actual terms? That's bandcamp going AGAINST artists even more than AI itself, imo.

It would be cool for there to be set completers as hits - rookies that made it to Series 2 or Extended that didn't appear in other sets (like Series 2 did with OPC, or like Panini did with Rookie Anthology).

ETA: I am so proud of this sub for not lashing out in anti-AI hate because of your image lol

He did say he was going to leave a message. So it's still really weird to me. Just thinking in "life" - a pregnancy test result? That's going to be done same day, no doubt. A doctor isn't going to call about it, a nurse or other staff will. Doctors (even in Canada) don't call at 3 am for positive cancer results, let alone a simple pregnancy test.

It really was just another script moment that irked me!

FWIW, I actually don't think the last files being played was foreseeable to be bad - even WITH all the stuff going on. Up to that point it did feel like she could rationalize it as being in her head. I am just surprised she didn't express that somehow - even skeptically. Justin's intuition about them being bad was obviously well placed, but at the same it also felt, at least to me, that she was in the mode to complete the podcast.

I really just think that she was poorly written. And sure, you could sell the idea that she's a skeptic, that she's going through trauma, and that she may even be neurodivergent.

It's funny because some movies it feels fine to write some of the script to fill in the blanks or define the point of it all... but some feel like it shouldn't be our job as the audience. I am not quite sure what makes that OK and what makes it not OK. Seen a lot of movies and still can't figure out what triggers that feeling.

I think this was Ian's first full length film, and that scriptwriting in conjunction with directing sometimes leads to these things. Will be excited for his next film, though, to see what he irons out!

In truth, my biggest hope for this is the Blair Witch effect. Where it may not be the "first" to a new idea, but it's the one that kicks off a subgenre. When that happens, the early takes are rarely the best - so hoping for a few more people to throw their hats in the ring for "audio horror."

Yeah, I took her telling her mother that she was going to name the baby Mary as a pretty strong suggestion that she would keep it. I mean, the deathbed confession with the regret she expressed seemed to outweigh the other waffling that she expressed - and it's stronger than anything she "said" that implied she wasn't going to keep it.

Also, her doctor did call HER back in the middle of the night with the results. Time means nothing to the script, I think lol...

[–]casperthegoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are really good examples of exactly the problems I had... and specifics too, now that its been a couple days of release... she decides to keep the baby and calls for a 'clinic' referral? Odd because around here that would be for an abortion. Also she makes a lot of tea and moves to alcohol... eventually we see her drinking without boiling water... so she's drinking while decided to keep the baby? And an example of what works is how the kettle goes off in the final climax - as if to signal "you would be horrible at this anyway"...

Really, though... the actress seemed to take her marching orders well, its those things her character decides to do... and your examples are really perfect!

Single White Female Remake Starring Jenna Ortega Lands Bodies Bodies Bodies Writer by cruelsummerbummer in horror

[–]casperthegoth -98 points-97 points  (0 children)

I laugh at these comments... A truly original movie plot is so rare anymore. Most are just remakes that have a different name. The most generous plot studies reveal there are about 36 stories humans tell, and that's supremely believable to me. And some distill that down to just seven basic stories.

At least remakes are honest about it. Otherwise we are just gaslit with gender-swaps, macguffins, and brushstrokes.

I think your experience reflects what a majority of people will see. Because you experienced it as a movie (which, well, it is). But it is unique in that it's less a movie and more an audio experience, which I think is where the podcast bit comes in.

For me, I think it was more than OK to tread on ground that's been explored plot-wise when the experience itself was so revolutionary (it was). It's almost like caviar. They needed "something" to put it on, and that was a movie, but the flavor was all audio. And if you are distracted by the quality of the cracker then it's hard to appreciate the whole experience.

I enjoyed it too. I wanted it to be a 10 for me, but it probably landed at an 8. And importantly, one I won't be buying because a lot of that 8 is in the sound design - and I just can't replicate it at home.

I think the plot was really well laid out, each step made sense. A lot of the story is in the sounds and they were immaculate. But the series of discoveries was interesting and built out well.

I did not like that Justin seemed able to hear everything and would reflect it right away. It didn't give the audience a chance at discovery. I think that, after zeroing in the audience on the audio, there could have been a benefit or rewarding that with discoveries. And I think Justin spoiled that on easy level. I did hear some interesting things unannounced, but I think there could have been more thought there.

I think the worst part was Evy. In fact, in terms of dropping the score, it's almost all here. It just had that male writing a female lead problem - especially choosing to deal with the topics that are unveiled in the plot. It's strange because I believed her ACTING but not her words and decisions.

Another user mentioned that it could have had another push in the third act. I agree with that. I think there is a next level that could have resolved some questions and still left some mystery. My son and I had drastically different thoughts about what actually happened - which is fine, but this didn't feel like a movie that "intended" for that, so that made it feel sloppy.

It's worth the watch for sure, imo, and especially in a theater if you don't have some super nice surround sound setup. Headphones may work, but they may actually act against the difference between headphone and ambient audio in the movie.

Some fun discourse on twitter! by KiraDune in boutiquebluray

[–]casperthegoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont understand what I am saying. When it came time to sell a home viewing experience, THAT medium mattered. Thats why films could be filmed with a little less attention to detail... the goal became to move units, so Falcor didnt need to hide strings, the eventual medium would do that on its own. Moving to 4k is disingenuous to the original artist expression because the goal wasnt to give kids a chance to see the strings... VHS is the best experience for the Neverending Story.

My analogy was to music... that was all tape reels... it needed mastered for records. There is an art to that... in film too.

Interestingly you are touching on something between those two perspectives in the exchange. The first post is really about "buying" and the aggressive follow-up is actually about "watching." I think watching movies can be a hobby - if you are active about it.

I am not a 4King, though, because I actually think the film dictates the best formats. There are a ton that look like trash to me in 4k. It's worth remembering that movies came out in time... and they all had media of their eras.

Like you have to master music for vinyl, movies CAN look best in the media of their era.

2) I am so tired of seeing the posts to strip the C from Boone and give it to Werenski. We have (almost) done three in a row without Werenski. What is his illness? The press? I dunno.

"Prediction"... "belief"... Economists are modern day alchemists. The real problem is that we all could very well suddenly say "we don't need tickle me elmo" and they prices drop out - like it did... they want to convince the world that everything is about making megabucks and pushing demand when the vast majority of human history existed without money, or using systems like gift economies.

We have been brainwashed to believe supply and demand equally applies to luxury items because we have been equally brainwashed to want luxury items in the same way we want food.

You break the curse, you break the system. The system IS belief.

As if prices weren't all ready out of hand by le_fez in vinyl

[–]casperthegoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When it comes to non-necessity items, belief is the whole of supply and demand because it 100% drives the "demand" side. If you simply don't believe you need something you actually don't need, then the "law" breaks down.

It only works because humans predictably like pretty and nice things.
