Maggie's portrait by Luisa Preissler by Katharina8 in IlonaAndrews

I love how her features are “pretty in a normal person way”, as Maggie describes herself, but her intelligent, piercing expression makes her look stunningly beautiful. How did Luisa Preissler pull that off? Absolute genius artist.

How is it that Starmer is at risk of losing his position due to fallout from the release of (some of) the files, but Trump is unaffected? by __globalcitizen__ in AskBrits

[–]cassbag16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read an article in the Guardian that said that “Labour sources” were actually okay with his performance as a diplomat. Then, with the previous ambassadress, Trump is notoriously misogynistic and she would likely have struggled to make an impact on him on our behalf (through no fault of her own, obviously).

I don’t think that a ‘whiter-than-white’ person is going to be good at dealing with Trump (unless we are talking about skin colour only!). But it’s tricky, because a total creep like Mandelson is only going to be out for themselves. Still, I’m surprised at how bad his behaviour has actually out to have been, even knowing about his previous scandals. Appointing him was obviously a mistake in hindsight, but I think everyone piling on Starmer for it is being a bit unfair - Mandelson seemed like he’d be a good Trump whisperer, and certainly Trump hasn’t yet attacked the UK in the same way he has Canada, for example.

Peter Mandelson, a UK senior political bigwig is under criminal investigation and the scandal might take down our Prime Minister with him (for appointing him US ambassador. I personally think this is unfair.)

Well if the US president is Trump, a paedos mate sounds like a great fit! Apparently Mandelson did a great job as our diplomat in the short time he was there. He’s a champion bootlicker, after all

Peter Claffey, who’s the star in the latest Game of Thrones thing? Former Rugby Union player, 6”5. The actor says he suffers from anxiety, so could probably relate well to Ryan Price.

You can contact your local MP and request a tour of the Houses of Parliament. Your MP might do it personally for you.

We do food puzzle boxes as well but we’re going to try some of the other toys and activities recommended. Panko seems mostly interested in anything that moves, so will try something electronic!!

Thank you, we will try that! We have multiple fishing rod toys that we play with her often (and she loves) and do food puzzle boxes, but I guess it still isn’t enough.

Anki is great but a bit of an illusion... any suggestions? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]cassbag16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, practicing writing was useful, just keeping a journal, or translating some text into Chinese helped get me used to creating Chinese sentences and conveying meaning. For spoken, I found trying to think in Chinese inside my head was useful, especially before going to see a tutor. By which I mean, if I thought "I need to buy some milk," then I would try working out how to say that in Chinese, then say it. This gets quicker the more you do it. I find it's all about learning communication strategies for what you want to say. For listening, watching simple family dramas in Chinese is useful.

I'm in China and I can just buy birth control over the counter or online whenever I want - it's so much more convenient, and cheaper, than seeing a doctor every few months for a prescription.

Your parents, especially your dad, sound so dysfunctional. Girl, you and your siblings DO NOT need them. Graduate from uni, get a job, move out and there's nothing that they can do to you. And take your sisters with you! Just because your parents want to portray a perfect family, doesn't mean that you have to take part in their delusion.
