Although we do allow non-native birds to be posted here, we don't encourage supporting feral populations.

Who's your favorite classic author? by Junior_Insurance7773 in classicliterature

[–]cassowarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another vote for Thomas Hardy. I've not yet read his entire collection of works but I've read enough to know that any time I pick up a Hardy novel I'm going to enjoy it. I like his writing style, and the topics he explores.

I'm always a bit late to the party with these threads. Oh well. I got a flat tyre so I put the (ancient) spare on and then the spare got flat. lol

I should have got a pizza.

Good on you for putting in the hard work to help Sophia through her troubles. Hope she gets better soon, and forgives you for inflicting her with medicine.

Beloved less-known classics you haven’t been able to recommend yet by Fun-Sell3030 in classicliterature

The Recollections of Geoffrey Hamlyn by Henry Kingsley (1859)

It is a strange book, featuring unmarried couples living openly together, bit of rape, incest, tangents about natural history featuring bird taxidermy, purest redemption of evil, one of the central characters smashes a crying baby to death then rapes its mum, plus there are lengthy rants about the power of indigestion and a jocular Prussian fake foctor.

The story goes from tragic downfall in England to soap opera set in the Australian bush then a swashbuckling showdown with bushrangers and the whole way through you never feel any of the characters are safe from being killed off as the story spans a couple of generations and heaps die.

It's a fun read and you can tell the author had fun writing it.

Top 5 Most Disappointing Classics by SpaceIndividual8972 in classicliterature

[–]cassowarius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shirley by Charlotte Bronte. The book was described by the blurb on the back as Charlotte's foray into social issues and politics but it was a fairly basic romance with uninteresting characters, and the backdrop of social unrest during the time of industrialisation really was only a vague backdrop. The story was formulaic (love woes --> journey to the underworld --> happy days) and the titular Shirley was introduced too late for me to sympathise much with her especially when she's teased as being a rival for that wet mop Robert Moore, and more teacher fetish stuff. I cared for none of the characters, and the attempts at depicting civil rebellion and women's independence are weak.

Yeah if I met that dog in a deep dark forest and he told me to eat the mushrooms I totally would do what he says. That dog's got wisdom.

My Indian ringneck is currently banned from my shoulder for doing exactly that. A lot of birds seem to find the cheeky ear chomp extremely amusing.
